Bill Happy April Group Members. The nomination thread is now open. The April/ May Group Read will be for Authors whose last name starts with the letter B. Just looking at my own small library, that should provide many choices. The thread will be open until around the 9th of April or when we receive 20 or 25 appropriate nominations. The following 'B' authors books have been read in the past as a group read -

1. David Baldacci - Memory Man (Amos Decker #1)
- The Camel Club (Camel Club #1)
2. Lawrence Block - A Walk Among the Tombstones (Matthew Scudder #10)
3. Linwood Barclay - Trust Your Eyes
4. Russell Blake - Jet (Jet #1)
5. James Lee Burke - Creole Belle (Dave Robicheaux #19)
6. Declan Burke - Absolute Zero Cool
7. Alan Bradley - The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (Flavia de Luce #1)
- The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag (Flavia de Luce #2)
8. Ray Bradbury - Something Wicked This Way Comes

Avoid nominating these books, please. You can nominate others by these authors, just follow the 'recommendations' below when nominating books.

A word or two about nominations and voting:

1. As has been the case for as long as I can remember, if your nomination wins the poll vote, you will be the discussion leader. Do NOT nominate a book if you do not wish to be the moderator.

2. When a book gets to the poll, please please please do not vote on it if you have no intention of reading it. This February / March selections are a good example of why -- very few people who voted actually showed up for the discussions. That is extremely unfair to the people who voted for the next two books on the poll. Bottom line: If you don't want to read it, don't nominate or vote for it.

3. This is not the place for authors to promote their own work.

4. If the book is in a series, it might be wise to start with book #1 rather than somewhere mid-series.

Good luck. I'm looking forward to seeing what gets nominated.

Mary (mary_kontrary) Talking to the Dead by Harry Bingham. First of four in the Fiona Griffith series and free as a Kindle eBook (at this time).

message 6: by David (new)

David Linzee | 37 comments Lawrence Block, a different title
Time to revisit one of the toughest of tough guy private eyes, Matt Scudder. How about 8 Million Ways to Die?
(Don't be prejudiced against it by the awful Oliver Stone movie adaptation. With the locale switched from New York to Los Angeles, it should have been retitled "3.5 Million Ways to Die"--and that was only the first problem!

Molly Tinsley (mollytinsley) | 2 comments Leaving Tuscaloosa, a literary thriller by Walter Bennett. Lee Smith calls it "deeply moving, disturbing, haunting, and important." Takes place in the South, pre-Civil Rights. Two young men, one black and one white, secret childhood buddies, move separately toward their mutual destiny in a world erupting beneath their feet.

Sorry Patrick, one of our few 'rules' is that authors don't nominate their own books. Please feel free to promote in the Author's section. Thanks.

I think B for Blake doesn't quite qualify. Save him for the C list!!!

Suzy (goodreadscomsuzy_hillard) | 702 comments So many great nominations! I was going to nominate Talking to the Dead, but since it's already been proposed, I'll nominate Murder in the Marais, the first in Cara Black's series set in Paris starring Aimee LeDuc.

Rebecca Birr | 2 comments J Russ Briley One Man Two Votes

I'm always looking for new authors. This one is a new thriller about a political conspiracy to steal our votes. Based in Washington DC, it seems timely with all the mess going on in the election and I love how it opens. It reminds me of the old Clancy books but updated with more action and a touch of sex to keep things interesting. Lots of twists too. It has great reviews on Amazon.

Actually, it was written on the funny side of things. And a tad on the promotional side. The book I mention is just out, I do not expect to get nominated with a week old book!

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 407 comments Loukas - maybe you should read the points about voting in the first post (especially number 3).

It's now April; out of the 2+ dozen books I have read since January, this is THE BEST ADVENTURE book of the lot. If you haven't read it yet, WHY ARE YOU WAITING????

You can choose one or both, whatever you'd like.

SherryRose | 930 comments Hi Deb, I'm not Bill but it's pretty relaxed. You can pick one or the other or both or none at all!

Personally I think The Widow looks good and our library has it on Overdrive. I love Overdrive!

Debby Kratky | 14 comments I think I'll try the Widow as well!

message 50: by Bill (new)

Bill You've got excellent answers, Debby, but just to add my two cents, pfennings, or whatever coinage you prefer, the group reads are there to provide options to our group members. If you wish to participate, you are most definitely welcome to. If the particular books don't interest you, there is always next months group reads.. :)
