Are you listening to the Monstrumologist on audio? I will say it took me a good while before I got into it originally because I did not know what was going on at first and who was who.

Haha....I'm reading the series too. I have about 1/4 of the last book left.
It's definitely "fluff" but it is really well written and I am thoroughly enjoying it.
I think you recommended it to me, Heidi. Thanks! :)

Ashley Marie Heidi, I'm reading the print Monstrumologist. I can keep track of people and happenings easily enough... would be easier if they happened quicker, but Yancey seems intent on keeping his wording just as flowery as it would have been in the 1800s.

Ashley I highly recommend the audio if you can get it - it was excellent.

It is indeed fluff. I can still to this day years later hear the audiobook narrator saying "Alexia" in Lord Macon's voice. I just loved it.

ASHLEY: Wow! You're like on top of things. I'm really happy that I started this book then. Now I'm ready for the shows. Well eventual shows.

aww...sorry to hear about your Monstrumologist problems. It's one of my favorite books. Can't win them all. Hope it gets better for you soon ^_^

BECKY: Totally agree with Heidi, especially in the later books.

DIXIE: Not a fan of Girl on the Train, but love twists and turns, might try one of those books in the future.

Started re-reading A Series of Unfortunate Events. Been years since I finished it and I really want to finish them before the Netflix show. Really excited about it! I think Neil Patrick Harris will be a phenomenal Count Olaf. (I just realized he has the same name as Olaf the snowman in Frozen and they have polar opposite personalities!)

Jen from Quebec :0) (muppetbaby99) Currently re-reading my Judy Blume collection, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (HAD to read more HP once Cursed Child was finished) and also re-reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Great stuff all around. I *DO* have a soft spot for YA. :0)

Is the His Dark Materials trilogy worth the read? I LOVE Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings, but usually fantasy doesn't 'do it' for me...

Ashley Marie Jennifer Lynn wrote: "Is the His Dark Materials trilogy worth the read? I LOVE Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings, but usually fantasy doesn't 'do it' for me... "

I like it so far; it's usually mentioned in the same breath as Chronicles of Narnia, to give you some idea (maybe?) of what it's like. I haven't read Narnia in years -- actually never read all of them, so maybe I'll look into doing that over the winter. But I love the concept of each person in this world having an animal companion of some kind.

I still need to read Casual Vacancy so I can watch that one! Lol

I only read His Dark Materials book one and was not a huge fan. I actually liked most of the book until last parts and then my rating went down. I know most people love that series though. Brigid is re-reading it now so perhaps she can give you some thoughts reading it as an adult because she first read it when she was younger I think. I did give it 3 stars so I didn't hate it by any means. I think I just expected to love it and since i didn't I was disappointed. That happens to me a lot! I am too picky!

I loved Casual Vacancy but it was super depressing just to warn you. I work with drug addicts and the books touches on addiction so I think that helped me get into it more than some others who I think were expecting a Harry Potter as an adult type book (which it was very far from).

I am currently doing a yearly challenged to re-read Harry Potter (on audio) and am on book 7 as well :)

Jen from Quebec :0) (muppetbaby99) I actually cracked and joined Audible.com for a free month JUST so I could finally listen to the amazing Harry Potter narrations I have heard about. Got Deathly Hallows and am loving it so far...(But I DO follow along in the book- cannot help it!)

The Casual Vacancy was very very good, but dare I say-- the TV version of it was *better* than the book? No? Just me? :)

Thanks for all your input on The Dark Materials everyone!

Harry Potter on audio is one of my favorite things in the entire world Jennifer. Glad you are experiencing it! I did not watch the HBO version of Casual Vacancy because it was not well reviewed but perhaps I should. I have HBO so I can On Demand it.

Ashley Marie HP on audio is beautiful regardless of whether you hear Jim Dale or Stephen Fry... they both do a fantastic job. Jim Dale remains my favorite.

Elora Mitchell | 578 comments Just finished The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis .
What a dark, uncomfortable-in-a-good-way, well-written book. A fantastic look into our culture and what we deem acceptable.

Jen from Quebec :0) (muppetbaby99) Aside from finally listening to Deathly Hallows on audio, I am currently reading one of my 'fall back' authors- Anne Tyler's 'A Spool of Blue Thread'. when in doubt, there are certain authors I go to, because I ALWAYS enjoy their work. (Stephen King, Chuck Klosterman, Bill Bryson, Thomas Hardy, Anne Tyler, etc). This one is good so far, but reminds me of 'Breathing Lessons' in that the main characters are quite similar....

message 822: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 578 comments Heidi, you should! It's not a relaxing read kind of book, though--just so you know. It's one that twists your guts, but is definitely worth reading.

message 823: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Ehhhh... "enjoyed" isn't the best word for a book like that. Relevant, certainly, and easily deserving of being widely read. Very tough though.

message 824: by Heidi (new)

Thanks Ashley and Elora. I read a reviewer of the book say that if you are sensitive to animal cruelty you might be impacted. I am 100% effected by animal cruelty so that scared me off.

finished reading...
The Assassin's Curse (The Assassin's Curse, #1) by Cassandra Rose Clarke

It was an ok read. Nothing exciting about it. It reminds me of a cross between Bloody Jack and Pirates of the Carribean.

Currently reading...
Confessions of a Murder Suspect (Confessions, #1) by James Patterson

I'm not really a James Patterson fan, but this book really looked intriguing.

message 827: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie currently:

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, #1) by Philip Pullman audio, hoping to finish it this morning

A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly Killing the Rising Sun How America Vanquished World War II Japan by Bill O'Reilly Assassin's Creed Renaissance (Assassin's Creed, #1) by Oliver Bowden

A Northern Light has stalled for the moment, but hopefully I'll get back to it once I get through a few of these others. Rising Sun is good at times and tedious at others and I'm ready to be done with it. Just started Assassin's Creed last night and really feeling the urge to look up a play-through on youtube bc I haven't played the game in eons.

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I finished The Monstrumologist . Very creepy and interesting, but at times I felt it was a bit slow. Will Henry had deep thoughts, but they sometimes seemed to drag on. Four stars. I'll put the other books on my Christmas list.

BECKY: Glad you enjoyed Monstrumologist! ^_^

Just finished reading...
Death of a Trophy Wife (A Jaine Austen Mystery, #9) by Laura Levine
I enjoy reading this series, but I might stop reading the series for this year and pick it up again in 2017. I feel like things are getting a bit repetitive.

Also finished...
Confessions of a Murder Suspect (Confessions, #1) by James Patterson
Not a fan, but it was interesting. Most likely I won't read the other books in the series. I just not invested enough with the whole story.

Picked up...
Off the Books (Novel Idea, #5) by Lucy Arlington
Not that far into it, but enjoying this cozy mystery.

As you can tell I've been on a mystery kick lately.

It was really good. It went a totally different direction than the first book did (which I really liked), but I can see why that might have bugged some people.

It's definitely worth the read. It delves into some deeper thoughts of war.

Elora Mitchell | 578 comments Just started A Torch Against the Night (An Ember in the Ashes, #2) by Sabaa Tahir

I really enjoyed An Ember in the Ashes (An Ember in the Ashes, #1) by Sabaa Tahir It had plenty of action, some intrigue thrown in, as well as thoughts on the horrors of war. It contained 2 love triangles....which should tell you have fantastic the plot is since I still enjoyed it. :)

No need to read the first book The Wednesday Wars- it is more like a companion novel IMO but I do recommend it (especially on audiobook)
