I'm excited for it :) I told her the premise reminded me of Ashfall and a little of Unwind, the whole dystopia-that-could-plausibly-happen thing and she's like I LOVE THOSE BOOKS OMG <3

I want to read more books by her eventually.

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I finished The Revenge of Seven (Lorien Legacies, #5) by Pittacus Lore which I enjoyed, a nice quick action-packed read.

Also finished Opposition (Lux, #5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout which was just okay for me. I actually liked the world building and the crazy aliens and Sci-Fi, I just never connected with Daemon and Katy as a couple. Never really felt it, for some reason *shrugs*

Also read The Wedding (Lux, #5.5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout which was kind of fun!

Next I'll be reading A Great and Terrible Beauty (Gemma Doyle, #1) by Libba Bray and Secret Histories (Lorien Legacies The Lost Files, #4-6) by Pittacus Lore and The Fate of Ten (Lorien Legacies, #6) by Pittacus Lore

I enjoyed The Diviners. Still waiting for my library to get Lair of Dreams.

Just finished Strings Strings by David Estes on audiobook and it was my favorite David Estes book yet! I really enjoyed it.

Donna (BookDragonGirl) (bookdragongirl) I agree Heidi, it's my favorite too!! Love that book :) Read it twice and listened to the audio once. :) It's one of my favorite books, and I go to it when I need a pick me up. :)

message 613: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I finished reading A Great and Terrible Beauty (Gemma Doyle, #1) by Libba Bray and by the end, I really liked it! It didn't start off the best for me....it just felt too MODERN for historical fiction, and didn't seem authentic at first. It was odd since it was Libba Bray, she usually nails that, but she did say that she took a lot of liberties with it. After I got past that, I really enjoyed the story, it was a good creepy mystery with a lot of fun magic elements!

Started and almost finished The Game of Lives (The Mortality Doctrine, #3) by James Dashner which is a nice quick read! I'm actually enjoying this one a lot more than the second in the series.

Not sure what I'm reading after that...either This Savage Song (Monsters of Verity, #1) by Victoria Schwab or rereading The Diviners (The Diviners, #1) by Libba Bray

I was not a huge fan of Great & Terrible Beauty unfortunately. I could not get into the fantasy parts for some reason and felt kind of disconnected from the book.

message 620: by Ashley Marie (last edited Aug 22, 2016 08:31AM) (new)

Ashley Marie Still have yet to read any Libba Bray, although I've got Great & Terrible Beauty on the shelf at home and Diviners on my Overdrive list.

update on my reading:

Wax by Gina Damico got 5 stars, it was hilarious and a little unsettling and just all-around fun.

Sweet Unrest by Lisa Maxwell, 3 stars. Good but a little generic.

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, 3.5-4 stars. A solid true crime read, but a bit dry.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, 4 stars. Good but I won't be reading it again. Too much sad.

Just started Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis and loving it already.

Ooh, I read In Cold Blood for a class a couple years ago and I really liked it. Very scary. o_o But yeah, parts of it were a little slow. I read The Kite Runner a long time ago and enjoyed that too; I agree though, it was like .... so devastating.

Kite Runner and The Road are two books that were phenomenal in my opinion but I will NEVER re-read either. Both too depressing/heavy for me!

message 623: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie ahhhh the Road was SO good.

I've decided I already want a copy of Not a Drop (and probably the sequel) for my shelf, right next to the Ashfall books :) I'm devouring this and simultaneously being pissed off at my bosses because they keep interrupting me with work-related nonsense :P

Elora Mitchell | 578 comments I'm in the middle of a reread of Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo and am loving it!
And I just finished The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern , which was nothing short of a magical read.
I'm also in the middle of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling and I honestly can say that I really don't like it. :(

Yeah I don't plan on reading The Cursed Child either ... I've heard almost nothing but negativity about it, plus I've heard it wasn't really written by J.K. Rowling?? So I don't really see what the point is.

Anyway, right now I'm reading our group read!

Alive (The Generations Trilogy, #1) by Scott Sigler

message 637: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 578 comments I wasn't going to read it, Brigid, but curiosity got the better of me.....I think it's going to be a DNF....

message 638: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments The point was it was a play that was released in London in July. JK Rowling wrote it with 2 other producers. They released it in book form so the whole world could enjoy the story of Harry's son without having to fly to London to see the play. So its in actual screenplay format.

I loved it, but I'm familiar with plays and screenplays. I just envisioned the whole thing happening on stage in my head. To me, it felt very authentic. I did feel like we were back at Hogwarts, the Ministry of Magic, Platform 9 3/4, etc.

The play was very well received, everyone was wowed by it. Not so much the book...and I'm guessing its the format that has people not liking it. Its above half and half if you look at the reviews. Half the people loved it, half hated it. I myself couldn't put it down, read it in a day!

Of course, I don't love it nearly as much as the 7 books...because its not the same of course. People who go into it with those expectations will be disappointed. But I do love it for what it is, a wonderful screenplay in the HP world.

message 639: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie JKR cowrote an original story with the two guys, one of whom, the playwright Jack Thorne, is the guy who wrote the play -- based on that story. I figure why not let us read the story she actually had a hand in writing? And for as disappointed as I was with certain aspects of the script, I would like to see the play on stage, just to see how they pull it off.

message 640: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 2471 comments Mod
I mean, I like plays too and I studied playwriting for a couple years. It's not the script format that's a turn-off for me, it's the plot. Like, I've read synopses of it and it just doesn't sound like something I would enjoy. But I don't know, maybe I'm wrong!

I would LOVE to see the play!! JK Rowling said she did hope they'd be able to put it on tour in the USA!! Hopefully they will at some point!

message 642: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 578 comments I think that's what it is for me, Brigid. I didn't mind the play format. It's the plot that I'm not liking so much. For me, it feels like a pseudo-rehash of things we've already seen.
However, I'm so glad that you loved it, Jenny!

message 643: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Thanks Elora! I'm sorry you didn't :(

I finished my reread of Flip (Slip, #3) by David Estes , so good!!

Also finished my reread of The Diviners (The Diviners, #1) by Libba Bray and it was just as good the second time. I'm glad I reread it, there was a lot I had forgotten. I think its been 3 years since I read it!

Also finished The Fate of Ten (Lorien Legacies, #6) by Pittacus Lore and that was a quick, thrilling read!

Next I'm reading Lair of Dreams (The Diviners, #2) by Libba Bray

message 645: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I've also been reading When the Italian Came to Stay by A.R. Conti Fulwell The Sound the Stars Make Rushing Through the Sky The Writings of Jane Johnston Schoolcraft by Jane Johnston Schoolcraft
the first is a historical romance that feels very Downton Abbey, written by a friend of mine
the second is for research for my WIP -- Jane Johnston Schoolcraft is generally acknowledged as the first Native American writer, and her stuff is fascinating
