Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I enjoyed Jackaby. I really should read The Monstrumologist some day. My library doesn't have it, so I'd have to inter-library loan it which I'm a slacker at doing.

message 452: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I'm planning on reading Monstrumologist come October... since I didn't get to it last October :P hahaha

message 453: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie currently reading Red Seas Under Red Skies (Gentleman Bastard, #2) by Scott Lynch Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1) by Kim Harrison The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón Phantom by Susan Kay

I'll probably devote more time to DWW and Red Seas after I've gotten through Phantom (it's a reread and one of my absolute favorites), and I'm still loving the audio of Shadow of the Wind.

Just FYI one of my favorites is on sale today for $1.99 I Am the Messenger I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak https://www.amazon.com/I-Am-Messenger...

The audio is fantastic on this one as well but it looks the whispersync audio price is $7.99 so not super cheap.

Donna (BookDragonGirl) (bookdragongirl) Thanks Heidi!! I snagged it. It sounds interesting and of course Markus Zusak!!

Donna (BookDragonGirl) (bookdragongirl) I set aside Blue Lily, Lily Blue (The Raven Cycle, #3) by Maggie Stiefvater for now and am reading Defects (The Reverians, #1) by Sarah Noffke for a read and review in another group. I'm loving it so far.

Defects sounds good

Donna (BookDragonGirl) (bookdragongirl) Yeah, I've heard good things about this author. So far I'm really liking it. I'll let you know what I think Heidi.

message 465: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I finished Lumière (The Illumination Paradox, #1) by Jacqueline Garlick which was an okay read, and To All the Boys I've Loved Before (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #1) by Jenny Han which was a really cute read and I loved!

Still trying to get through The Dark Days Club (Lady Helen, #1) by Alison Goodman I'm having trouble getting into this for some reason. Also going to be starting Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

Thanks for the update on All the Boys Jenny. I hope to get to it soon.

What I loved about it was actually the relationship between the dad and the 3 sisters. I think you will really like this one just for that! The "boys" and the situation on top of it made it really fun!

message 468: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
Sounds great Jenny! Thanks again for the update.

What is Shadow of the Wind about??

message 472: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Heidi (Yup. Still here.) wrote: "What is Shadow of the Wind about??"

A kid picks up a rare book, loves it, and subsequently tries to find the author/author's other work, only to find out someone has been systematically destroying all his books. That's the simplest description I can give you and it leaves SO MUCH out -- all of these characters are intertwined and it's such a beautiful story. The audio was fantastic.

currently reading...
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2) by J.K. Rowling

I've been having book reading blues so I decided pick up a classic. I feel like I haven't read any books lately that I gave a 5 star and I really needed a pick me up.

I keep forgetting how good these books are, I mean I know their good, but they're amazing!!! Wont get tired of reading them!

That was probably my favorite thing about that book too, Jenny! The family relationships were really sweet and realistic. The romance was a little melodramatic at times, but I still liked it and it didn't go quite in the direction I expected.

Ooh, I read that sometime in high school and loved it! I feel like I should re-read it, though. It's been a long time!

Elora Mitchell | 578 comments Just started Snow Like Ashes. So I have a question for you all, since I don't know much about mythology and such. Are seasoned kingdoms a thing? I've been reading some books recently (this one, A Court of Mist and Fury, and of course there's Game of Thrones) that have kingdoms spring, summer, winter, fall. Is this something the authors are doing on their own or does it have roots in fiction from the past?

Heidi (Yup. Still here.) wrote: "Good question! I have no idea and didn't notice it until you pointed it out."

Well, there's Narnia-- It focuses on seasons quite a bit through the books. And seasons in general have been inspiration in art forever. I'm sure a lot of it was inspiration from mythology as well, which definitely uses the seasons in its stories.

But you're right, it has been a recent comeback, I've picked it up in a lot of books.

message 481: by [deleted user] (new)

read Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon yesterday loove it.
starting Rebel of the Sands (Rebel of the Sands, #1) by Alwyn Hamilton

message 482: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Jenny makes a good point with Narnia, but I'm thinking mainly the authors are doing it on their own. I think GRRM in particular brings Narnia into the ASOIAF books because in his world there's no telling how long a season will last (a la Narnia and Jadis' rule), but in Snow Like Ashes each individual kingdom has its own season and they don't really intersperse. Haven't read ACOMAF so I can't say anything about that one, but I'm digging the trend.

I really enjoyed Squire, too, Jenny! I love that Tamara Pierce has written so many books! :)

message 485: by Dixie (new)

Dixie Minor | 276 comments I read Don't Try to Find Me by Holly Brown , which was one of those twisty turny books; I am really liking those these days! I love the psychological suspense. Also finished Dimestore A Writer's Life by Lee Smith , which was a great memoir and story of the time/ place where she grew up; also really funny! I asked for a novel by her for my birthday. I don't read that many memoirs; I like them but I am a fiction junkie! ;)

I know what you mean about non fiction Dixie. It has to be pretty well reviewed for me to read a non fiction book. Funnily one of my favorites was Rob Lowes book (first one). He narrated the audiobook and everyone in my audiobook group loved his narration so I grabbed it when it was on sale and really enjoyed it surprisingly.

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments Since I stopped being a regular here, I've read many books. I can't remember them all, so I'll narrow it down to a few.

Finished the Artemis Fowl series. Not bad, definitely not a regrettable choice.

I also finished Winter (The Lunar Chronicles, #4) by Marissa Meyer and The Raven King (The Raven Cycle, #4) by Maggie Stiefvater both of which I liked as their own books, but fell somewhat short for me as series enders. Still, I very much enjoyed both series.

I'm now about halfway through with Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) by Kristin Cashore and, as much as I want to love it, I have mixed feelings so far. I tried to read it once before and DNF. This time I will finish and hopefully be more decisive by the end of the book.

Ashley Marie DNF'd American Gods and started Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup .
Also loving the crap out of (and nearly finished with) Red Seas Under Red Skies (Gentleman Bastard, #2) by Scott Lynch .

Jenny, your library already looks fantastic! So much potential! And I love your kitty :D

message 499: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 578 comments Jenny, your library looks amazing!!!!!

I'm still trying to read The Monstrumologist (The Monstrumologist, #1) by Rick Yancey I really like it; I just wish I would have read it before Jackaby (Jackaby, #1) by William Ritter
Jackaby feels like a humorous knock-off of The Monstrumologist, which is keeping me from devouring this book (haha pun intended)!

message 500: by Ashley Marie (last edited Jul 09, 2016 07:14AM) (new)

Ashley Marie 5 stars for Red Seas Under Red Skies. beautifully crafted. Halfway through 12 Years a Slave and it's good, but I think it suffers from the wordiness of the time period.

Really got sucked into Burial Rites by Hannah Kent
