Brigid ✩ | 738 comments Aliza and I are buddy-reading The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater!

The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater Blue Lily, Lily Blue (The Raven Cycle, #3) by Maggie Stiefvater The Raven King (The Raven Cycle, #4) by Maggie Stiefvater

Aliza is reading them for the first time; I'm re-reading the first three books and then reading book 4 as soon as it comes out! If anyone wants to join us, whether you're reading them for the first time or re-reading, feel free. :)

message 2: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments yay! I'm really excited to read them. where are you up to Brigid?

message 3: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments I'm around page 250 in the first book, I think. I'm hoping to finish re-reading it within the next couple days. After that I plan to read a couple library books before re-reading book 2, so hopefully that will give you some time to catch up! :)

message 4: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments that's perfect.

message 5: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments I'm about 15% in. it's cute and interesting but I still don't really get what's going on... (ley lines, dead kings...?)

message 6: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments Yeah––honestly the first time I read it, I was sooo confused about all the ley-line/Glendower stuff. There's more explanation as the book continues, but it's definitely a lot to take in at first. And I feel like I had to re-read it a couple times to understand it better. :D

Basically all you need to know is that the ley lines are a source of magical energy, and Glendower is a dead Welsh king they're trying to find (because whoever finds him gets a "favor"). Hopefully that's not giving too much away; I don't think it is, though. :) And if you're confused about anything else, just let me know!

BTW I finished my re-read of the first book today. Hopefully I will start re-reading book 2 in a week or so.

message 7: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments great! I should be able to finish the first book by then.
I'm also very curious about Gansey's background. where was he before aglionby?

message 8: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 449 comments Fun.....Brigid just told me about this buddy read. If I can get through my other two reads I'm finishing, I'll join you guys.....Raven King is coming soon! :)

Oh fun! I'll join in on this, but probably not until next week!

message 10: by Aliza (new)

message 11: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments poor Adam :'(

message 12: by Brigid ✩ (last edited Mar 31, 2016 08:46AM) (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments @Elora and Jenny - Yay! Happy you guys are joining in. :D

@Aliza - I'm not sure how far you are, but you do learn a bit about Gansey's background by the end of the first book––at least, why he chose Aglionby. And why he's looking for Glendower.

And aww I know, I just want to hug Adam. :(

message 13: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments yeah. things definitely start to make more sense the further you read. honestly, they all have really well crafted back stories. I feel sad for Adam and for Ronan as well.
I can't figure or if there is going to be a love triangle...

message 14: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments I agree, I love how well-developed all the characters are!

And no, there's not really a love triangle. I guess there's a little bit of drama (view spoiler) but it doesn't interfere with the plot too much––and it doesn't ruin their friendship or anything, which is good. :)

message 15: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments I'm so glad I have you to answer all my questions ;).
I'm about 40% into the book and I really like it.

I just finished the first book and am so excited to start the 2nd book. I had heard such great stuff about the series and wasn't so sure about it when I started, I couldn't understand all the hype and was so confused but man am I glad I kept reading. As soon as they start explaining everything that is going on and the book starts to pick up, it's amazing. I ended up LOVING it actually. All the boys were so interesting and I loved how Blue just connected with them.. I feel bad for adam too...

but Noah I thought 'wha-what'

message 17: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 449 comments I'm 80% through my reread. I loved The Raven Boys when I first read it years ago. It's been on my favorites list for awhile, but over time, I'd forgotten how great the book is. And now I'm reminded!
(view spoiler)

message 18: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments I'm 70% percent through so hopefully I will be finished really soon. I'm reading enjoying it.

message 19: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments @Jenn - That was pretty much my experience when I first read it––it's confusing at first, but it gets really good as everything starts to piece together. And re-reading them, I can see a lot of foreshadow for what happens in later books. ;) Glad you ended up loving it, and I hope you enjoy the sequels!

@Elora - Right? I've read the first book three times now, and each time I just love it more. Maybe it's because I feel like I know all the characters so well now. I love them all so much! :) (view spoiler)

@Aliza - Yay! I'm excited to hear what you think in the end. And I'm glad you're enjoying it so far. :)

message 20: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 449 comments So I just finished the first one and realized that The Raven King is being released the day after St. Mark's Day.
"Coincidence," she said, even though they all new that when she said that, she clearly meant the opposite.

message 21: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments I didn't realize!

message 22: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments Omg. I hope that's not why it was postponed for so long, lol. :D

message 23: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments yay! I finally finished the first book yesterday and I really enjoyed it :)

message 24: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments Yay I'm happy you liked it!! :D What an ending, huh?

message 25: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments yeah! and what a beginning to the next book.

message 26: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments Yes!! Hope you enjoy The Dream Thieves; I think it's my favorite of the series (so far). I have a long road trip this weekend, so I'm hoping to start re-reading it then. :)

message 27: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments I'm 50% through the dream thieves and I'm really enjoying it so far. I like Adam a lot less than in the first book but I like Ronan and Gansey more than before. the whole situation with Ronan's parents is really weird. I have mixed feelings about the gray man. overall I'm really enjoying!
where is everyone rose holding?

message 28: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments *else

message 29: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Sternshein (bookdorkjenn) | 30 comments I just began The Dream Thieves so i'm not sure what's going on yet. the gray man just made an appearance, I mean if you could call it that. more like storming into the story.

Yeah, Adam is probably my least favorite of all of them. Ronan and Gansey are my favorites. :) I haven't started re-reading The Dream Thieves yet, but I plan to start it today!

Elora Mitchell | 449 comments Jenn wrote: "I just began The Dream Thieves so i'm not sure what's going on yet. the gray man just made an appearance, I mean if you could call it that. more like storming into the story."

That's a great way to describe his entrance. :)

message 32: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments I feel like Ronan is the center of this book. you learn so much about him.

message 33: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments Aliza wrote: "I feel like Ronan is the center of this book. you learn so much about him."

He is! Probably that's why it's my favorite of the series. :D

message 34: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 449 comments Love this:
"Blue cheerfully spit a mouthful of brown water on his boat shoes. It pooled in the canvas over his toes. 'Now they're really boat shoes,' she replied."

message 35: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments @elora- I loved that line as well. the relationship between blue and gansey is really coming together in this book.

message 36: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 449 comments I finished The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater
It was so good the second time around.
(view spoiler)
I've said this somewhere before, but I love how 300 Fox Way is a character all of its own. :)

Elora Mitchell | 449 comments Aliza wrote: "@elora- I loved that line as well. the relationship between blue and gansey is really coming together in this book."

Have you finished?

message 38: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 449 comments "Your exit, dick!" Ronan snapped. Or Dick. It could have been either, really.

message 39: by Aliza (new)

Aliza (alizaf) | 111 comments I have about 15% percent left so almost there

message 40: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 738 comments I'm a little behind you guys, I'm at like 25% in The Dream Thieves. But I hope to finish up within the next couple days!

Elora - Haha, I agree for the most part. Except I've always loved Gansey. But yeah, Adam can be very woe-is-me. :P I sympathize with him to a certain extent; I know what it feels like to be a poor kid with rich friends, and how alienating it can be. But it is frustrating how he never wants help from anyone, and how he's so mean to Gansey whenever he offers help. *sigh* Gosh I love Ronan so much, though. And I really love Noah too; I feel like he's so underrated, haha.

I was just reading this part which made me laugh for like five minutes:

(view spoiler)

Elora Mitchell | 449 comments Book 3....oh that drive gave me all the feels. If I had money to burn, a muscle car is first on my list!

message 50: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 449 comments Just finished book three...*rubbing hands together* give me book four.
I didn't like this book very much the first time I read it....it was my least favorite of the three (even though I loved it leaps and bounds above most other books).
This time it blew me away!
Things I adored:
As I mentioned in a previous post, the drive. Stiefvater captured the power behind that car so well.

Quotes I loved:

(Malory, unhopeful: "I don't suppose you have any tea?"
Jesse: "DO YOU WANT EARL GREY OR DARJEELING?" Malory: "Oh, sweet heavens!")

"It was easier to be unafraid when you were the one doing the fearful things."

And of course there was a flowery bit from Ronin that would be too colorful to post here. ;)
