How did you like Henrietta Lacks, Caro?

I like it... I did not love it. It seems to me that they were several parts of the story of the writer that were not necessary, she does not only writes the book about Henrietta Lacks, but her story of how the book was made, and yes is interesting, but I think it was too much of that and at some parts I got distracted from what was more important in the book. Is a mixed feeling, if GR will allow me I would put 3.5 Stars.
Have you read it? Are you planning to do it?

It's a long while since I read it. I got it really cheap in the supermarket and it really surprised me. I found it very interesting but I think you are right about the making of it being a bit distracting. It's amazing that one person could unknowingly have such a huge impact on the world.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just cleared another book off the Kindle - Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. Ugh, I am so glad I finally finished this book! The writing wasn't bad, but what should have been a thrilling narrative was related in such a mundane fashion, that it fell flat. While I understand the ending, it was trite and rather rushed. Overall, not my favorite. 3 stars

message 583: by Sylvia (new)

Sylvia Swann | 8 comments I will finish three books all at once soon. I'm way behind on my fiction book. It's colossally big, Rutherford's "Paris". I'm thinking of stopping and restarting it at the end of the year when I've reached my reading goal of 25 books.

I hope we keep doing Clear the Shelves all year. November is usually the best time for me to be in Clear the Shelves mode. That's when I'm cramming small books in to make sure I reach my yearly reading goal. I've got a few tiny books that have bee sitting there for years like, The Little Chinese Seamstress, and Girl in Hyacinth Blue, that I still haven't read. There are others that I've been "meaning to read" like The Shipping News, and All the Light We Cannot See. There authors I need to get back to like Fitzgerald and Faulkner. And authors I just need to get to like Auchincloss and Saul Bellow.

As long as we have books to read life is filled with promise!

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just cleaned a book off my 2016 shelf - Midnight in Broad Daylight: A Japanese American Family Caught Between Two Worlds by Pamela Sakamoto. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The author's writing is clear and told as a story, rather than a dry recitation of facts. The book is readable, and the figures depicted are inspiring! Someone needs to purchase the rights to this book and adapt it into a film! Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

5. Gettysburg: Two Eyewitness Accounts by Lt Frank A Haskell & Col William C Oates

I bought this book when I was researching the southern side of my roots. My great-grandmother's sister on my mother's side was married to Col. Oates, one of the authors. I originally just read the introduction and never finished - I've finally finished reading it and it's a very detailed account of the battle, from both sides of the war. My review is here: Gettysburg
