Leprechaun Event RaT: Read-a-Thon Wrap Up

1: What did you think of the read-a-thon? Did you have fun?
Well, it was my idea, so I rather liked it. :) I did have fun, which was the point. While I love to read and get books done, I also enjoy the interaction part of read-a-thons, which I haven't seen much lately and wanted to provide some of.
2: How many books did you start and/or finish?
15 books started, 13 of those finished. Books listed below
3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
That was my favorite part!! Though as time went on and I needed to do more for the Leprechaun stuff, I didn't get the chance to answer/respond to everything, like I started off doing, but I still read everything and enjoyed getting to know everyone!
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon?
It was good. I always love to read about what others love to read, even if it isn't my cup of tea. I still enjoy learning about any and all recommendations of books!
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
My goals were loose, for me, since I knew I'd be wrapped up in doing other stuff for Leprechauns. Keeping up with everything took away some time from this, but I knew it would so I kept my goals light. I did better than I expected and will finish off the other two books as well, at some point. :)
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future?
I would. I hope tp make them a regular occurrence here, if there is interest.
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better?
Not at the moment, it's too early. Besides I'm asking YOU all that. :)
8: List your final book/page stats.
Completed ~ 13 books, 2638 pages

Started but not finished ~

I did have fun! I always love challenges, and one to get me to read more is great.
2: How many books did you start and/or finish? I finished 9 books and started an additional 2.
3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
These were interesting, but there were a lot of days that I just didn't have time to go back and the other answers.
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon?
Loved these! I especially had fun digging back through old books I've read, remembering ones I've forgotten.
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
My goal was to try to stay consistent and I mostly met that, with the exception of the last day.
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future?
Definitely!
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better?
Hm, I'm not sure, this is the first one I've ever done, so this is really all I have to base it on.

Started but not yet finished:

It was alright. I didn't participate much aside from the questions and recs because I'm a slow reader.
2: How many books did you start and/or finish?
I started 8 and finished 6.
3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
It was good. Except for the fun facts about yourself days because I'm completely uninteresting and it was hard to think of that many things to say when we covered most of it the other days lol
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon?
No complaints :)
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
Just to read what I wanted and only read for fun, which I did.
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future?
Probably, although if we're trying to focus more on reading than interaction, two weeks seems a little long.
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better?
For me, the whole leprachaun tie in is really overwhelming? That's pretty stupid, I know. But I have so many other challenges going on that when I have to do like 20 little things in different places for one thing, I tend to just shut off. I also have a hard time telling the difference between what is for the whole community and what's for the RPG challenge, which I don't participate in anymore. So I guess if we were to do another read-a-thon, I'd like just an individual on it's own not tied to anything else read-a-thon.
8: List your final book/page stats.
Books I finished:

Cait ~ Well done!! Finishing 6 in 2 weeks is a great job done! Try not to worry about the speed in which you read, just read and enjoy it. Everyone has different times they can read, ways they can read and so on. I finished a bunch but most of them were novellas, so it's really not that much in the scheme of things. :) I am sorry you felt overwhelmed by the Leprechaun stuffs. We do like to throw a lot out there. But only the crazies (I mean that in a good way) try to get through it all. Just focus on what things you find is fun! I'll definitely do a RaT on it's own and if I do one tied in with another event, it probably will be a lot quicker and not so much crazy stuff.

1: What did you think of the read-a-thon? Did you have fun?
It was pretty good. I have a difficult time differentiating it in my head from the greater Leprechaun challenge. I didn't participate much aside from the questions and recs because I'm a slow reader. The one exception to this is the sprint relay, which I loved and wish I had participated in more. (48 hour sprint relay? with a bit more notice for clearing schedules?)
2: How many books did you start and/or finish?
4 books started, 2 of those finished. Books listed below
3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
That was my favorite part. In both the daily questions and the sprint relay.
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon?
It was pretty good. I love getting recommendations. I seem to be one of the only non-fiction readers though, so I felt like some of my recs were out of place, and it was at times hard to find books that met the topic.
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
I didn't have any goals.
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future?
I might. I was engaged with this one because of the greater Leprechaun theme, but I might not otherwise be encouraged keep up with daily questions.
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better?
If there were more encouragement to READ, especially for slow readers who are unlikely to finish many books and thus get rewarded for that.
Stuff like a minimum page count each day, and if you meet it you get coins. Maybe it's a surprise and it varies from day-to-day, to challenge different levels of reader (like I wouldn't bother to engage on days that were too much for me, but that would be ok).
Or you get double bonus points if you read during a certain time window. Like a post pops up "10 bonus coins if you read for at least 30 mins between 0900 and 1200 GMT tomorrow". Obviously with different time zones, not every one caters to everyone, you just sprinkle them in a fairish distribution and if you can't make it, so what?

Started but not finished ~

Thanks for the suggestions and let me know if there's anything else that I could do to make RaT or even challenges more fun for you. We are currently trying to figure out more ways to get "slower" readers, or readers who don't get to read often, more engaged in challenges and such. I know it seems like we cater to the big readers since they, well, we since I'm one too, are always reading so much. But I hope that you'll always find things for you to enjoy.
Did you do any of the puzzles, or any of the non-book stuff for Leprechaun? That's a reason we have a mix of reading and non-reading things to do, so everyone gets a chance to earn coins. Those active in read-a-thon recs and questions were earning similar amounts to the book events. You received coins just for joining in the sprint, but I didn't see you have any others. I encourage you to deposit your coins (for all the recs/questions) and anything else you may have done into the Coin Counter thread. Since on the sheet it only said you had coins for the sprint, you've already received bonus coins. If you don't know about that, check out my Read Me thread.
Sorry too that my prompts didn't lend well to non-fiction. :( That's definitely not my thing, I've read probably 20, or less, in my life, most of those being about the parks (Disney). I'll try to be more universal about those kinds of things if I do something similar in the future.

I enjoyed the questions and recommendations because they helped us get to know each other better
2: How many books did you start and/or finish?
I didn't really keep track
3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
I liked the interaction quite a bit
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon?
I thought that was a nice component and it added a lot to my TBR
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
I didn't set any goals
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future?
yes
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better?
I can't think of anything off hand
8: List your final book/page stats.
I didn't keep track... I did read at least one due to the relay, which I thought was a fun idea

I did most of the puzzles and thought that they were really fun. I don't mind that most of the challenges cater to faster readers, I can still find fun things to do. I was just trying to think of some things that might encourage me to read more during a read-a-thon.
Thanks for all the work you put into this!

1: What did you think of the read-a-thon? Did you have fun?
I enjoyed it. Answering the Daily Questions and finding books to fit the Daily Recommend rules was fun!
2: How many books did you start and/or finish?
I started a total of 14 books and finished 13, but only 10 were "full" books. (Two of the books were children's picture books and one was a very short story.)
3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
I really enjoyed answering the Questions and seeing how others answered. It was fun - and rather cathartic - sharing bits of information about myself. :-)
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon?
I loved figuring out which favorite books of mine I could recommend. I haven't really paid too much attention to the books others recommended, but I plan to go through all of the Recommendation threads in April, once the March Leprechaun-Coin Madness has hopefully ended. :-)
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
I didn't really set any goals beyond "try to read more and have fun!," but I had sort of hoped to read a book a day for each of the 14 days. I realize that I had this hope, though, only now that we're done and I find I'm disappointed at "only" reading 13 books, especially when three of them were picture books/short stories.
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future?
Yes! But I hope that next time the Read-a-Thon could be independent and not tied into the other things going on in that month. (For instance, I probably would not have done this Read-a-Thon if it weren't for the fact that I could earn LCs for March. Because it was part of the LC stuff, I signed up and participated. And while it was a ton of fun, I felt overwhelmed and overextended. This is why I chose not to participate in the Sprints. Even though coins were a possibility, I just couldn't face adding another thing.)
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better?
As I've said above and in earlier threads, it would have been better for me had it not been tied into the March Leprechaun-Coin madness. There were just so many different things going on that could earn us LCs that I felt really overwhelmed once the Read-a-Thon began and I ended up feeling overextended (which is why I didn't participate in the Sprints). Once the Read-a-Thon began, I found that my participation in my team's thread for the Around the World Challenge dropped off. Oh, I still participated, but I was "late" whereas before I was "early." :-(
Trying to coordinate between the LRPG; Road to St. Patrick's; Daily Puzzles; Read-a-Thon's Daily Questions, Daily Recommendations, Daily Tasks; Visits to the Wishing Well. . . Well, finding time to actually READ became the true challenge. :-(
So this Read-a-Thon was great fun, and thank you for all of your hard work! :-) But. . . (see above).
8: List your final book/page stats.
I read a total of 3,534 pages over about 85 hours (most of them late at night and past my bedtime). Here's my tracking post. :-)
Since I see that others have done it, here's my list of the books I managed to finish during the Read-a-Thon:

I also read the first 40 pages of The Restorer.

1: What did you think of the read-a-thon? Did you have fun?
I thought it was great fun! Thanks, Karysn, for coordinating and for all your hard work!!
2: How many books did you start and/or finish?
I finished 6 and have 2 additional started that I plan to finish before the end of March!
3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
I did enjoy it. I don't normally have a lot of interaction on the site, outside of the challenges. It was fun reading all the fun facts about everyone and comparing what we all like to read!
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon?
I love recommendations - I love reading something outside my normal "go to type books" and there is no better way than from a fellow reader's recommendation!
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
I had sort of lofty goals...LOL - I just wanted to participate as much as possible and have fun! Mission accomplished! :)
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future?
Absolutely!!
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better?
Not at the moment! I read the comments that having it tie in with the other Leprechaun events made it hard to follow....but I just focused on the things I could do or thought sounded fun, so that wasn't a issue for me. I loved the puzzles too!!
8: List your final book/page stats.
Books Completed: 6
Books Started, but not completed: 2
Pages Read: 1,512
Coins Earned: 56
(Will finish at least one more book for LC before the end of March)
Leprechaun Bonus (10 coins) - for answering all Today's Questions and my sincere thanks for joining in these past two weeks!! :) LC = 10

It was fun --- I liked the interaction. The whole month has been great -- but so much was going on, that I actually spent less time reading.
2: How many books did you start and/or finish?
I finished 3 that I started prior to RaT, read 2 complete books and started 3 more.
3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
Yes, seeing people answers to the questions were fun.
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon?
I like the recommendations and it was fun going back to my shelves to give recommendations. I know that we were reading the rainbow, but I did like the focus on cover colors and color words in titles. I made a couple recommendations for books just because it met the criteria, but I might not have recommended that particular book otherwise.
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
No, I've been recovering from some health issues so I didn't want the added pressure.
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future?
Sure -- why not?
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better?
I didn't really understand how the reading sprint was supposed to work. I know we were supposed to sign up for a time, but I didn't understand if it was both days or just one.
I agree with the folks that there is a bit too much going on --- you mods have done amazing, but it takes time to sort through everything.
8: List your final book/page stats.
Stated books above. Page total: 1551.

I liked the read-a-thon. It didn't necessarily get me to read more, but I had fun socializing with everyone.
2: How many books did you start and/or finish?
6
3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
It was the best part of the whole thing. I loved getting to know others.
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon?
I participated very little in these. It was fun trying to find a book that matched the ask, but my TBR is already so big that I kind of stayed away from the recommendations of others.
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
My goal was to read 50 pages a day which if you add in my audiobook time I think I met it...maybe. The answer requires too much math.
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future?
Most definitely.
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better?
I wouldn't mind a bit more discussion on what people are reading in the moment. Maybe just a dedicated "what are you reading" thread that goes on through the read-a-thon. I know you can see the info on the goals page, but there's little discussion or sharing of what you thought of the book. The reading sprints were cool too.

I really enjoyed the read-a-thon! I really liked getting to know other users on here and just being open to conversations.
2: How many books did you start and/or finish?
I started 6 books and finished 5. Just started A Darker Shade of Magic a couple days ago.
3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
I really liked the interaction - it was one of my favorites about it! Sometimes its hard to jump into conversations in long-going threads (like the Tavern), but here where everyone was starting out and you could jump in whenever you could made it a lot easier to talk with others. Life kinda hit hard this past week so I didn't participate as much as I would've liked in the end :(
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon?
To be honest, I've barely had a chance to look at them, but I really do want to check them out! It seems like there's so many books that I just haven't heard of and would love to explore :)
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
My goal was to read the books I needed for the LRPG. I feel like the books I have read have been successful in that respect. I definitely didn't read them all yet, but I still have a few more days of March left!
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future?
I would love to :)
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better?
I liked how there were different questions for each day so people can jump in for the same topic whenever they want without worrying about the flow of the conversation. I think having less questions a thread would help with staying active within the read-a-thin. I loved all the questions, but it can be difficult to dedicate a solid hour of answering questions/replies to questions when there's so many. Or that may just be me. I'm horrible at managing time :P

I really enjoyed it. I loved having set goals for the amount I wanted to read, and the interactions really helped me to get to know more people, which is always a plus.
2: How many books did you start and/or finish?
I started and finished 13.
3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
I think this was my favorite part. We can always read, but having ways to interact with one another, while reading, it’s the best of both worlds. Especially the reading sprints. Reading at set times with other people keeps me more focused. It’s a social way to keep reading.
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon?
There were a few books that I immediately wanted to read, and did read because of the recommendations. So, they definitely did what they were supposed to.
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
I said I wanted to read at least 200 pages a day. This is about 2 hours of reading or so. I made it for most days, so I’d say that’s good enough for me. Plus, if I divide all of my pages, I still made it to the 200 pages a day mark altogether.
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future?
Absolutely!
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better?
As others have said, making the read-a-thon the main event, and not a part of the huge whole will keep it from being as overwhelming as it was at times. Other than that, I really have no complaints. I really enjoyed all of it.
8: List your final book/page stats.
I finished 13 books, for a total of exactly 3600 pages. Here are all of my books:

Thank you for such a fun, challenging and interactive event!

I am sorry that some of you have been overwhelmed by the Leprechaun Event. I'd like to offer some thoughts/advise on that.
While there are some readers who are able to dive in and do everything that an event like Leprechaun's has to offer, that's not exactly the point of an event like this. We DO offer a huge variety of things to do, not for you to stress yourself out doing but to give a variety.
Think of it this way ~ the Leprechaun event is a Buffet .
If you go into a buffet, very few people are going to select EVERY item there and eat it all!! Most people will just pick and choose a few things they enjoy most and eat that.
That's what our big events are meant to do. Give you many options to pick and choose from, but not have to gorge yourself on all of them. :) In the same thought, if you go into a buffet and all they have is scrambled eggs, that would get a tad boring. So instead of giving you one thing to do, say the Wishing Well, we give you many.
I hope that for future events, it doesn't overwhelm some of you. Just don't feel like you have to do everything. It's definitely all meant for fun, not stress!!
From your feedback, questions (though maybe less) and recommendations will probably make a return in the next Read-a-thon. We'll see what we can do to make it a good mix of interaction, reading and fun.
P.S. ~ More Reading Sprints on the horizon. Info coming in the April Newsletter. :D

I am sorry that some of you have been overwhelmed by the Lepre..."
Woohoo, more reading sprints!
The problem with a buffet is, I do get overwhelmed. Especially an Indian buffet. There is like, all this amazing, exotic food, and I want to try all of it, and I only have so much money, so I can only go the buffet maybe like once every few months, and the next time I go, the choices might be different, so I'll only get this one chance to try everything on the menu, and then the person telling me my options is like, there's buttered chicken and chicken tandori and 5 different types of dosas, some with potatoes and some with onions, and 4 different dipping sauces, some spicy and some not and 1 is coconut flavored and one is yogurt based, and there are 5 types of curry, some with chicken, and this really nice goat one, and then, there's rice, 3 kinds of it, in fact. Oh...my...god, what do I pick.
OK, so it's not that extreme, but when there's so many fun things to do, I want to do them all, and though there will be lots of events rather similar to the leprechaun event, there will most likely not be a leprechaun event quite like this leprechaun event, so I've gotta get my pot of gold and visit the wishing well a few times and do the read-a-thon and try to get down the road a little ways and coins coins coins! Maybe that's just my competitive nature talking as well.
I don't mind the big events, at all. In fact, some times I just love a whole lot of things to do. It's just that every now and then, a 1 event kind of thing, a nice meal at Olive Garden, where I can sit down, relax, and order my single meal, no choices, and savor it, can be just as lovely as the really crazy, yet amazing Indian buffet I enjoy so much.
Phew, analogy rant about events and buffets and restaurants is over now.

I understand, it's hard to resist. We do offer lots of yummy things to do. I just dislike that people feel overwhelmed or even stressed out about it. I'm one to sooth the masses. :)
Hopefully the occasional Relay Sprints and Read-a-thons (not associated with a larger event) will be a good sit down 1 event meal. :D We do like to have some times of quiet, before the madness starts again. :)

I am sorry that some of you have been overwhelmed by the Lepre..."
You raise a good and valid point, Karsyn. I think my problem was just that many of the March challenges had the Leprechaun Coins in common. I had intended to only do the LRPG and the Daily Puzzles and the Read-a-Thon, and maybe the Road to St. Patrick's. But then I realized that I could earn coins by doing the other LC events (Wishing Well, Dress Your Leprechaun, Something Is Coming), and they didn't seem like they'd be a lot of work, since I was going to read what I was going to read and - if the books counted - great! - but if they didn't count - C'est la vie.
It's just that the daily puzzles and the keeping track and the reporting of coins-earned and . . . well, it all snowballed.
I did appreciate that all of the LC things could be found in that "Leprechauns Are Taking Over!" discussion folder. And I wasn't going to do the "Dress Your Leprechaun" or the "Wishing Well," but then I realized that the books I was reading could count for some of the things, so which books where and . . . Again with the snowballs.
So it'd have been nice if the Read-a-Thon weren't hooked into the LC things. Or if maybe there weren't so many different LC offerings. . . But then on the other hand it was all so great and so fun. . .
So really I have no complaints. I just need to learn to better modulate my own time and control my impulses to sign up for things. ;-)

There are a lot of places Cait, sorry about that. It's too much going on for one post. Things to do would get lost and people would miss out on things. Most people just kept track in LRPG or Road to Completed and then just added links when they finished something.
I'd suggest making bookmarks for all your challenges. For me, I created a folder on my taskbar that has threads I need to check in it. That when if/when things get buried, I have the direct thread linked up so I don't have to search for it. You could make different folders for different groups or different things you are doing. Once you have things together, it's just a matter of starting to check in on them regularly.
I know it was a bit of a pain to keep track and post your coins elsewhere, but it was the only way we, as mods, could keep up, otherwise we'd do nothing but track coins if we had to go searching after them. With 72 people on the spreadsheet, it's easier for us if y'all put it in one spot. As it was, I usually have to dedicate an hour to updating the spreadsheet between puzzles & coin collector. It's not much at all really, but would be if I had to track each thing down.
Hopefully we can continue to improve on the way we do things, and continue to find new ways to keep y'all entertained but keep it fun and stress free.

YUP, it was fun. It was just a bit too hectic for me though. I enjoy more of a leisurely pace.
2: How many books did you start and/or finish?
I started 15 books and finished 13 of them.
3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
I tried to catch up with the Lepreachaun Puzzles over at the Leprechaun take Over Event and missed most of the read-a-thon tasks. But I was able to do some of the recs and questions so in the end it was all good. :D
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon?
To be honest I only skimmed some of the recs. I like theme/topic/genre recs, those I read through, but when it's recommend a book that has XX in the title, or a book that has XX on the cover - I am not interested.
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
No, my only goal was to have fun. :D So I guess that the goal was met. ;)
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future?
Probably yes. Depends on my work load.
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better?
Maybe, next time it would be better to hold a read-a-thon seperately from another big event (I mean the Leprechaun takeover). Both events were great, but sometimes it was just too much to take in at once.
8: List your final book/page stats.

I loved it, but it got a bit crazy in the end. I thought it would just be the RaT and Road To St. Pats, so I got confused with the questions, refs and coins. I had so much fun, but it's to the demise of everything else. Like I'd like to stop work at my real job to read & track challenges.
2. How many books did you start and finish?
Started: 13
Finished: 9
Picked up, but never started: 6
3. How did you like the interaction of the RaT?
That was probably my favorite part. I like making new friends, seeing what others enjoy reading. I think it makes us, as readers, less isolated.
4. How did you like the recommendations of the RaT?
That was my 2nd favorite part! It's fun to recommend, but even more fun to see what others loved to read.
5. Did you have any goals?
Goals? We don't need no stinkin' goals?
6. Would you participate in other RaT's in the future?
Most definitely!
7. KISS. Keep it simple, silly. Maybe 1 event, recs /questions would be more than enough (especially for us fun-loving slackers!) the over achievers can always find something hardcore to do! :)

2: How many books did you start and/or finish?

3: How did you like the interaction of the read-a-thon?
I actually like to read what other readers answered. I agree with Lauri.
4: How did you like the Recommendations of the read-a-thon? The recommendations were too specific imo. I prefer when it's per genre or maybe if we could identify readers with similar tastes, to give recommendations to each other during the readathon. Or maybe give a limited number of recommendations and telling others why she/he liked it and why he/she would suggests it.
5: Did you have any goals? If so, did you meet them?
Not really, I missed a couple of days in the beginning of the readathon but I really wanted to read at least 50 pages each day. I've noticed that my reading is slowly picking up compared to last year.
6: Would you participate in other read-a-thons in the future? Yes, if they last more than a couple of days.
7: Can you suggest anything to make a read-a-thon even better? Simplify it a little. And about the recommendations an such, I will pick quality over quantity any time. Also not daily tasks, but spread them out.
8: List your final book/page stats.
