Karen Rashid | 137 comments I am going to pay tribute to my mother this month. She is the person who instilled a love of reading in me at a young age. Even though she is relatively young (in her early 60s) some medical issues that she has had over the past couple of years have robbed her of her joy in reading as she is no longer able to maintain sufficient mental focus or concentration to read any sort of literature, particularly novels.

I am going to read Animal Dreams Animal Dreams by Barbara Kingsolver by Barbara Kingsolver. This book connects to my mother and the letters of April in two ways: she loves animals and nature A and she has a belief in psychic powers P and prophetic dreams.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Good luck with selling your house and your move, Lisa. I had to laugh about your list. As soon as I started reading it, I was thinking and looking to see if I could find ones that were missing. Not going to go there, but good for you! (okay - maybe one. Acrobat for A). ^-^

Your book choice sounds like a perfect fit. :)

Thank you.

Ha, ha…now you have me thinking about A's…and it's not pretty. But we can't pay tribute to those people, lol.

LOL. Well, we could - but that would be a whole different kind of tribute! We can agree on a silent one, huh? :)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments By the way, my tribute will be to Andy Grove. I have a vested interest in him as I have been working for the company that he is best identified with for the last 35 years. I have a book that I bought at a library sale about his early life that I have been meaning to read. A=Andy (I could also apply all other letters of the month to him. (P=Paranoid, R=Rabid, I=Inventor, L=Leader).

Swimming Across: A Memoir is what I am going to read.

Freddie Mercury, lead singer and song writer of Queen.

One of his songs he wrote was Bicycle (Race), I am going with the theme of race- run. With The Scorch Trials,
The Scorch Trials (Maze Runner, #2) by James Dashner by James Dashner

Tammy Burger (tammyburger) | 819 comments I'm reading in tribute to my mom, whose heart is breaking as we recently had to place my dad in a nursing home. He is her HEART. I will be reading Thorn in My Heart. This is a reread for me. She and I will go to many of the places this book occurs this summer in Scotland.

message 62: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I'm late to the party here, but I'm in for this challenge. I choose David Bowie - I've been reading the Rolling Stone Bowie Edition and so he's been on my mind, still. There are so many words you can use to describe Bowie, but I'm going to go with "innovator", and read, The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution, which seems fitting as Bowie was one of the first artists to embrace technology's impact on music dissemination.

message 63: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I started my tribute book today. I'm reading The Best of H.P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre. HP Lovecraft was born in August, as was my Grandad who I'm paying tribute to.

message 64: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I found my tribute book yesterday. I wanted to pay tribute to a woman who was my best friend for thirty years. She died of cancer about eight years ago. Her name was Linda, and her birthday was in August. The book I am reading is Enchanted August. In the book, four people who don't know each other jointly rent a cottage in Maine for the month of August, and go there to "get away from it all." (The book is a sort of modern retelling of "Enchanted April.") The book reminds me of Linda because she loved vacations, loved to travel, and loved to organize group trips to places like Disneyland and San Diego.

"Heart" doesn't appear to me to relate to any of the letters in April. The challenge is to find something about your mother that starts with a corresponding letter A P R I L. Maybe she was born in April and you would read a book set in April. Maybe she's a physician and you would read a book where the main character is a Physican.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I decided on my book. I'll finally start reading Memoirs of a Geisha (tribute to sister who went to a tropical asian ISLAND on her last holiday, and the book is set in Japan which is also an asian island). It has been on my tbr for ages!

message 69: by Lilisa (last edited Apr 03, 2016 07:27PM) (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments I am paying tribute to an older friend who served in the army during WW II and the Korean War - so using the "A" in April. He is 94 and despite slowing down, is still right in the game - he has a great sense of humor and is a quick wit. I met him years ago when I was in college and he was the head of the university's PR department doing a photo shoot for marketing materials and I was in it. We've stayed in touch over the years and I call him every few weeks (we live in different cities) to see how he's doing and besides, he makes me laugh. His son gets frustrated with his dad and says his dad is very stubborn because, of course, my friend never listens to his son! After all, my friend is 94 and he's been around the block a few times and served in two wars! You can hear the father-son arguments! Anyway, to pay tribute to him I plan to read Winter in Madrid which is set during the Spanish Civil War and World War II since he served in the army. Will start the book later on in the month as I need to finish the two books I'm currently reading.

Sarah | 18550 comments I've abandoned my book. I read 10% I think but I wasn't feeling it. I might try again with another book after I've finished my current book. We'll see. I have to say that I feel a bit guilty because it feels like I'm no longer tributing my grandad :-( But I know he'd rather I read something I enjoyed which is what I'm doing now.

Yeah, that's how I read what she meant. He was in the Army, she's reading a book about war.

I completely missed the APRIL association with this challenge - been a rough couple weeks. haha. Going to have to think a bit on this one.

message 80: by Heather (new)

Heather Morris | 125 comments I want to pay tribute to my dad, who passed away from cancer in 2008. He was: an Amazing person, born in August, a Lover of Animals, and Passionate for what he believed in. He also loved cars, the oil field, and the lumber industry (maybe I'll be able to find a back story with one of these). I'm still searching for the right words and right book. My local library is tiny and really limits me. LOL. This gophering is hard work... I'm not sure how y'all find books set in August, etc. I'm having a hard time thinking beyond the title of a book.

message 81: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11316 comments Heather, maybe a book published in August is easier to find in your local library?

message 82: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Heather,

Yes, settings are hard enough, but timelines, unless someone tells you or the summary indicates it, are impossible. Titles are easier to gopher because you can at least put in a key word, like August. Maybe he had a favorite book or favorite author or a favorite genre? You could read from one of those.

You said he loved the oil field? I read a book a couple of years ago called "Oil". (I loaned it to a guy at work and never got it back). I cannot link but I can maybe come up with a title tomorrow when I am at work.

message 83: by Heather (new)

Heather Morris | 125 comments Thank you Sandra and Cherie!
Cherie, Unfortunately my dad did not read (he was an outdoors person solely), so I can't draw any inspiration from what would be his favorite works. But, I would definitely be interesting in more info on the Oil book.
I'm going to go to my library again over the weekend and see what I can find.

How about he is the RHYTHM of her heart. ? r is in April

message 85: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (nchigh) | 718 comments I haven't decide if I will join this challenge or not. If I do, I would honor my late grandmother, Sadie, who loved politics, making the world a better place, cooking for her family, gardening and helping those less fortunate. She was born in April 1916 and would have been 100 near the end of this month. I will think on a possible word and look at my book stack.

message 86: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Heather, while you are at the library this weekend, you might look for Enchanted August. I read it for this challenge, and really enjoyed it. It's set on Little Lost Island near Maine, which is apparently a beautiful spot. Four people who had not previously known each other jointly rent a cottage there. The book is a sort of modern retelling of The Enchanted April, which is also a very good book and probably easier to find. I think the cottage in that one is in Italy.

message 87: by Heather (new)

Heather Morris | 125 comments That looks like a great book. I checked the online card catalog and nothing. Humph!

message 88: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments It is pretty new. I paid more for the e-book than I usually do, and paper copies were just as expensive. I bought it anyway, because it looked perfect for my challenge and I spend more on books than I should, anyway.

The book I was thinking about is Oil!. This is the one I read. Oil! by Upton Sinclair . I had never read anything by Upton Sinclair before I read this book. Personally, I thought it was a very interesting story, but I have heard he is not for everyone. I loved the way he described things and the dialogue. It may have been more interesting for me than it might be for you, because I grew up in Southern California and I knew where many of the locations of the oil fields and oil wells were.

It was just a thought. I was only trying to throw out possibilities.
Too bad he was not a reader, but I am sure you will find something you will enjoy reading while you think about him.

Maybe a book about the outdoors, in a forest, or a lake?

message 91: by Heather (new)

Heather Morris | 125 comments I found a free ebook through bookbub that can fit for a word connection. Love and Decay, Volume One.

The person I pick for my tribute is my dad. I loved him very much. So I picked L for Love. Just ignore the second word in the title... that's a little morbid. Focus on the word Love.... lol. If this book doesn't pan out, I'll be back (that's for you Marcus)

message 93: by Heather (last edited Apr 06, 2016 02:29PM) (new)

Heather Morris | 125 comments Thanks Cherie! I'm willing to read anything once :) I will give it a gander! I live near Titusville, PA - birth place of the oil industry, so even though it's set in a different town, I'm sure I will find interest in it.
Update: I just checked my local library and they have it available to borrow, so it's a sure thing I'll be reading it!

Thanks again!

message 94: by Annerlee (last edited Apr 08, 2016 07:45AM) (new)

Annerlee | 2873 comments I'd like to pay tribute to Patrick Stewart (of Star Trek Next Generation, Cptn Picard fame). Just finished a marathon to watch All the episodes, so he is fresh in my mind. What an amazing actor with an amazing voice- I love it when he quotes Shakespeare.

My word is going to be Actor (of course). Don't know which book yet though... Station Eleven would be the obvious choice, but I read it last year... maybe something connected with Shakespeare ...? Not sure

message 95: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60102 comments I may be switching my tribute. As I'd mentioned elsewhere, we attended a family funeral on Tuesday so I could give him a tribute. After the funeral and before my dad and I left Lethbridge, we stopped at a seniors' residence to visit a family friend. She's the 90 year old mother of my former best friend who died when we were 10 years old. I may switch my tribute to my childhood friend, Karen. I'll decide this weekend when I finally get some time to myself.

message 96: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Annerlee - I love that you are honoring Patrick Stewart. He is wonderful! I considered honoring Leonard Nimoy by reading William Shatner's book but I am keeping with Andy Grove.

It is not Star Trek, and not written by Shakespeare, but it is Shakespeare like.
Check out William Shakespeare's Star Wars: Verily, A New Hope by Ian Doescher. I bet even Patrick would love it. I have them all.

message 97: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 2873 comments Cherie wrote: "Annerlee - I love that you are honoring Patrick Stewart. ..... Check out William Shakespeare's Star Wars: Verily, A New Hope by Ian Doescher...."

Yes, I saw those...! They look like great fun.
The 'Verily' book only has 174 pages though, so I won't be able to use it for the challenge : ( But I treated myself to a copy anyway..

You're right, Leonard Nimoy would also deserve a tribute.

message 98: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60102 comments I finally made a decision. I'm going to honour my childhood friend, Karen. Her father was a physician. In fact, he was our family physician.

My word is... obviously... physician, and I'm going to read The Coroner's Lunch.

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Cherie wrote: "Annerlee - I love that you are honoring Patrick Stewart. He is wonderful! I considered honoring Leonard Nimoy by reading William Shatner's book but I am keeping with Andy Grove."

I started listening to Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship with a Remarkable Man and didn't make it through the first disc. I can only assume Shatner was trying to sound serious, but he was really boring. He needed to be more like his normal self and let his humor and wit come through. Maybe it did later, but I didn't stick around to see.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Bummer, Jmom! Well, I have it in my Audible account when I get to it. I'll let you know. (I did not listen to the sample. I just told Amy to buy it for me when I saw it. Won't be the first time either. You think I would learn, huh?)
