R13: Team #8 ~ The Walking Read

So with my Ninja powers I decree that you can use either shelf:

Shelf #6: SFR Completed
These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman
Completed: 5/5/16
Rated: 4 stars
I am definitely intrigued by this series. So much happened in this one...between the death and revival of a character, being stranded on an experimental planet, and the love story which seems doomed to fail...It's a pretty intense story. I must admit to groaning when the SFR shelf came up, I am usually not a big fan of SF. This one was definitely worth the read though. I will definitely be reading the next one!

That is what I am reading too! It's a reread for me but I love the series.
Cool! I'm excited to read it, it's been on my list for a long time :)

Going to start with

Shades of Treason by Sandy Williams
Number of Pages: 288 pages
Read: 4/29-5/3
Rating: 3 Stars
Review: I’m on the fence about this one, although I am a big fan of Sandy Williams’ Shadow reader series. Not sure if the overall quality is lacking due to a change in publisher or not, but Shades of Treason felt a bit unfinished and lacking the depth of her previous works.
The story started out strong enough; a tension filled situation with two protagonists who obviously knew each other and had some unresolved sexual tension, but beyond that the story fell a little flat, especially in the world building department.
There was no prologue or glossary of terms so the reader is left a bit wanting into what anomalies are, how they came to be, why they are so rate, etc. There are also numerous references to past events where no explanation is given beyond the brief reference; examples include Rhys’ death and funeral, Rhys’ strained relationship with his father and his joining the federation, and the split between the federation and the other worlds.
Overall, this an average read for me, mainly because of the lack of world building. I will give the next installment a try to see if the series improvements but if not this series may be a miss for me.

A Hound is person that is able to identify magical signatures and Allie Beckstrom is the best there is. When a little boy is almost killed because someone offloads their magic to him, Allie traces it back to her father. She confronts him and finds out that there is more to it than she ever imagined. Now someone is trying to kill her and she is being set up for murder. She just has to stay alive long enough to find out what's really going on and who is actually behind it all.
This series doesn't have the usual suspects in UF. There are no supernatural creatures, at least not yet, instead it's all about Magic. Magic is like a commodity and her father holds a lot of power in the corporate world of Magic. Different- I liked that. However, there was still something missing for me to really love it. I think I needed more character development and world building. It was almost like listening to an abridged version vs. the unabridged. I'm not completely sold on the series yet but I'm willing to read the next book at least. There is still a lot left unanswered. Hopefully, I'll find that missing something and have a new series to finish.

Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost
Finished: 5/6/16
Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥
Cat was a product of her human mother being raped by a vampire and therefore, she grew up hating vampires and thinking that they were all evil something that her mother constantly reminded her. When she turned 16, she started luring vampires and killing them as a demented way to earn her mother's love. However, a failed attack on the enigmatic and powerful bounty-hunter vampire, Bones, forced her to partner with him to hunt vampires. Cat was an absolutely adorable character. Though she was a tough gal with a penchant for killing vampires, she was like a little child wanting to please her mother. Her "business" partnership with Bones gradually evolved into an intimate and loving relationship which she desperately tried to hide from her family leading to hilarious antics. Bones and Cat were great together and in this book they were going after someone who Bones was "investigating" for eleven years. This was a re-read for me and it was just as good the second time as it was the first.
Completed Week 7: Hunter
Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost
Completed: 5/7/16
Rated: 4 stars
I really liked this one...I fell in love with Bones pretty much immediately, he's hilarious! I admit to not liking Cat very much at first, she was so prudish and lives-under-a-rock innocent that I found her irritating. However, as her character grew I began to like her a lot more. The two of them together is great.
I loved the idea of a half-vampire character, seeing Cat grow into her vampire side was pretty cool. There is also a pretty strong backstory for both of the characters which is nice, and a bit unusual. The ending is quite the cliffhanger, I can't wait to find out what happens in the next one!

Thanks, me too! I can totally see why you would wNt to do a re-read :)

This is a Beauty and the Beast retelling and I loved it! Both times. I finished it days ago and immediately got sucked into the next book. Which is even better, by the way.
This starts off with Feyre hunting in the woods and killing a large wolf. She questions herself about it because she's not sure if it's a Fae in wolf form or just a large wolf. Turns out, it was a Fae and a Beast comes to demand retribution. She is sent to the Fae world and soon discovers that even the Fae have nightmares to deal with. Can she, a human girl, break the curse?
Fae stories have always fascinated me and this one is a favorite of mine. They're not just human like creatures with pointed ears, they have magic and special powers that make them just as interesting as other other supernaturals. They also have the creep factor going for them. Some of them are the things of nightmares.
SJM is a favorite author of mine. I love her Throne of Glass series but this one is even better, IMO. At this point, I'll probably read anything she writes. Fantasy and Romance- SOLD! There is a hint of a love triangle in this one. Be warned! However, don't let that stop you because the rest of it more than makes up for it! And the triangle is demolished in the 2nd book.
I also love that series! I'm waiting for the second one, there's about thirty people ahead of me in the library lineup so it may take awhile haha

It's ok, I have so many books on the reading dock anyway I shouldn't be complaining. I'm in way too many team challenges :p thank you anyway though!

Jabril by D.B. Reynolds
Read: 4/30-5/11
Rating: 4 stars
Review: This is the 2nd book in the Vampires in America series and a continuation from where the first book, Raphael, left off. It had been awhile since I had read Raphael so I wasn't totally clear on the events of the first book; but that didn't stop my enjoyment of this installation.
The plot was intense and let's just say that these Texan vampires are pure evil. It was interesting to see the stark differences between the two territories. Mirabelle and Elizabeth are two sisters who have been "kidnapped" by Jabril in order to control their large fortune. When Elizabeth escapes, Jabril hires Cynthia (or Cyn as she likes to go by) to find her; and so starts the adventure.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I listened to the audiobook and although Traci Odom is a new narrator for me, I enjoyed her interpretation of the characters. This series will be one that I will be continuing.

This book has been recommended to me so many times and since I love her October Day series I thought I would love this too. Unfortunately, that was not the case. It was a good book. However, it was very slow to start for me and never completely grabbed my attention. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I wanted Zombie action and there was very little of that.
It was interesting to see a different take on the zombie infestation though. This is 20 years after the infestation began and people continue to live with zombies ambling about. Say what?? Everyone has just accepted them and adjusted their lifestyles into a new society. Crazy!
Instead of this being a TWD re-run, it's something new. Georgia and Shaun Mason are bloggers following a presidential campaign. Along the way, someone is trying to sabotage one the candidates. People are killed and Georgia and Shaun are right in the thick of things.
I'm still undecided if I want to continue the series or not. Although some of it was interesting there was whole lot of boring to me.

Completed Shelf #8: Favorite Series

Rated: 4 stars

I found this to be a very interesting story, I love time travel books. Gwyneth annoyed me a bit, she came across as a bit ignorant and whiny, that might just be because she's young though. I am hoping her character grows throughout the series. I really enjoyed the story overall though, the idea of a family line carrying the genes allowing them to time travel was pretty cool. There's also a secret society involved, I am looking forward to finding out more about them in later books, it was only sort of touched on in this one. So, not a bad start to a series but I definitely feel like there is a lot more that I would like to know...it didn't grab me as well as I would have liked.

Vision in Silver by Anne Bishop
Read: May 11-16
Rating: 5 Stars
Review: I love this series! The world building is so unique, but realistic at the same time; the characters wonderfully diverse and the dialog witty and intense at the same time.
I adore the wolves banter:
“She cried on me,” Nathan said. “I couldn’t understand most of what she said, but she cried until my fur was wet.” . . .
“There’s nothing in my fur, is there?”
Simon gave the other Wolf a careful look. “No boggers.”
“Good. I hate washing boogers out of fur.”
“Who doesn’t? What comes out of human noses is disgusting.”
At times I was laughing at the dialog, but Visions in Silver does deal with some series issues such as the terra indigine and human conflict, the cassandra sangue introduction into the real world and the rising human's first movement. Overall, The Others is a truly unique and awesome series; so much so that I purchased the next book, Marked in Flesh, as finishing Visions in Silver up.

This review is going to be short because I have run out of things to say about this series other than I LOVE IT!!! This particular book gave Mr. Mira a bigger role which I thought was great because he is just so darn cute. Can't wait for Apprentice in Death to come out :)
