If I'm not mistaken, you've now done all your four reviews for this group! Thanks for taking part - I hope we will see you in a group again.

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 551 comments For everyone else, the deadline for round 1 is in three days but with one exception, everyone's done their first review. Deadline for round 2 is May 17.

message 162: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 551 comments Excellent - thanks to you too Anthony; you are also finished for this group and again, I hope we will see you in another one.

message 163: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 551 comments Yes, Kelvin is the exception but he's not overdue yet - he has another three days - and anyway I tend to give people a day or two's grace beyond the deadline.

There can be a lot of reasons why some people are slower to post than others (workload, family circumstances, exploding laptops etc.). However, if we really don't hear from him, I will send a 'mod prod' by private message.

It occasionally happens that people never do post any reviews, and in those cases we suggest that the reviews of their own book are removed at the end of the group. This is pretty rare.

Thanks Mike - enjoyed it much and already signed up for another group.

Can I join a group like this one again? For a new round?

I think it's an important subject, Francis; I have a very long reading list at the moment but when I get the chance, I will have a look at this myself. I am very strongly in favour of demystifying science and tried to do that with a book of my own based on my PhD.

You absolutely can. The only problem that may arise is that you may find some of the same people in it, so it can be tricky for Emma to juggle the running order and prevent repeat or reciprocal reviews. But she is pretty good at that. And if it really can't be done, you could join a general round where all types of books are permitted. We also have novella rounds for books under 40,000 words.

It's definitely not beyond non-specialists, and it's an important aspect of climate change. Unfortunately the publisher has set the price stupidly high at $90, and even I have to pay for copies (and there's no ebook). But if you have access to a good public library, you might be able to order it (the New York Public Library has it). And if you have reading rights at a university library, they might have it or would be able to get it through an inter-library loan.

It's frustrating!

Molly McHugh | 56 comments Mike - when is this round up, reviews asked to be completd by? April 26th?

I've only received one review - and one reviewer I've tried to send a pdf file to twice but he does not respond to my messages asking for an email address.

Kelvin Dorsey - are you still in this review round? If so, why are you not responding to messages?

Crikey Folks! We're in the company of someone who has a PHD and whose books sell for $90!!

I'm overcome by a feeling of insufficiency!

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 551 comments Oh no you're not Anthony. Relax, pour a nice glass of Croatian wine and listen to Dario's ravings on the radio. (Those of you who do not understand this advice need to read Notes From a Very Small Island - or better still, go to Vis and chill with the author.)

Hi Molly - Round 1 ends on April 26, and if you have had your round 1 review, you're running to schedule. Kelvin Dorsey has until the round 2 deadline of May 17 to post his review of your book.

That said, Kelvin could perhaps have responded to your messages - has anyone else had problems contacting him?

Also, who is the reviewer who has not replied to your messages? It may be they have simply downloaded your book from Amazon and do not need the PDF, but again, they could let you know that they have done this.

Please folks, if you are taking part in this group, monitor and respond to your PMs - and if you have decided not to take part, it's a little late... but at least let me know so that no-one wastes time reviewing your book.

message 174: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 551 comments If it's UW they should have no problem - Wilfrid Laurier University Library and Guelph both have copies, according to WorldCat.

Good luck, and I will be very pleased to hear what you think of the book. It is a specialized work, looking at the relationship between agriculture and the global carbon cycle; but it fits this into the context of global climate negotiations, and everything is explained in a way that an intelligent lay person can follow.

On a lighter note, the fieldwork for the book, in Brazil, was a little bizarre. I wrote about it in another book, The Nine Horizons, but that chapter is also online, here: http://mikerobbinsnyc.blogspot.com/20...

Round 2, May 17
Round 3, June 7
Round 4, June 28

This concludes my reviews for this round (done all 4).

message 187: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 551 comments There is sometimes a delay with Amazon UK, yes and it can be a pain in the ass, but it makes it easier for me if you wait and just post them together. Please. It really simplifies my life. I'll tick them off when I've seen all three.

Francis, has Kelvin done all three reviews? He has not posted them here.

message 188: by Kristian (new)

Kristian Hall | 96 comments Ok, will do Mike.

message 189: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 551 comments Thanks Francis, this is helpful - I'll tick them off the list. Meanwhile I'll write him and ask him to post the links in the normal way.

If your book does increase IQ, I'd better read it - then I might be able to understand my smartphone.

message 190: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 551 comments I shan't worry, as mine has already exploded. I am working on a review of several books that can broadly be described as futurology (Al Gore's The Future, Michio Kaku's The Physics of the Future and various others).

A little off-topic, but I gather the Large Hadron Collider was shut down last week by a stray weasel. I imagine your book doesn't deal with weasels, unless as part of risk and probability!

message 191: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 551 comments Indeed. And the weasel should have done a rigorous risk assessment. It didn't survive; perhaps it was crushed to a singularity.

message 192: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 551 comments Fried weasel. You've just put me off my dinner :-)

message 193: by John (new)

John Wood | 37 comments It's very clear what happened to Mr. Weasel. Its head exploded.

message 194: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 551 comments What, from reading Francis's book? It couldn't - it will have been a French-speaking weasel, and the book's in English.

message 195: by John (new)

John Wood | 37 comments If a weasel can learn French, it can certainly learn English. But that's beside the point. The explosion was clearly redacted for security reasons. Yes, folks, there are now weasel drones! Don't continually stare at the skies; train your eyes into the foliage.

message 196: by Kristian (new)

Kristian Hall | 96 comments Mike, I edited my post above, with the missing Amazon UK review of Simply Bob.

That means I'm finished with the reviews for this round.

message 197: by Mike (new)

Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 551 comments Can't immediately see the link but I'll take your word for it. Yep, that's you finished Kristian, many thanks.

Six people have now finished. For those (only two of you) who haven't done their round 2 reviews, the deadline is two weeks today.
