Jackie (thenightowl) "Kinda trashy"...you've peaked my interest. What is it?

Blather away. I can't be arsed either. I rejoiced a little when our entire was system down this morning. :) The bad part is that I'm part of the Automation team, so I kept getting asked when are we going to be back up.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Well, it's called Splintered and it's a sequel to Unhinged - and I do not recommend being piqued.

It's got all the YA cliches, complete with crappy love triangles and the romance overshadowing every thing else about the book.

It's terrible, really, and I'm probably going to regret reading it... but, damnit, I have a weakness for hot Mad Hatters... :-/

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm still working on Caliban's War, and I'm really enjoying it. Not sure if I want to keep going in the series though, because I want to read The Martian this month with the group, but I like to alter genre a little. I might have to read something short and non-spacey in between.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I have a copy of Federations from the library that I'm going to try to read.

Other than that, I'm going to try to start Blood Song tonight but I might now - I have phys therapy. :(

The funny thing is I'm not part of any sort of tech team, though I am often the go-to tech person because the people around here seriously don't know how to do, well, anything...

(I literally had to show someone how to make a webpage a favorite the other day.)

So, one day recently our payment system was down and we had to get out a "rush" payment, so of course my one handler was being a spaz...

And she's like "What are we going to do?"

Me: "Wait for it to get fixed... What else can we do? "

Her: "How long is that going to take?"

Me: "As long as it takes... "

I mean, wtf do you want me to do about it?

I get this. I have a few series that are horrible and I know they're horrible, but I loves them anyway.

That convo with your coworker is my daily work day. LOL.

Speaking of the library, I need them to check on a book for me.

I didn't see it in the catalogue so e-requested it only to be told it was in the catalogue and look again...

Well, I've looked several times so either a) I'm crazy or b) they're wrong (or c) both).

Jackie (thenightowl) Nicki wrote: "I didn't know Kate Quinn had a series on the Borgias. I've got to pick those up. I'm fairly obsessed with that period of Italian history in general, but especially the Borgia family. "

Yes, the sequel just came out this year. To be honest, I'm not really feeling this series the way I feel I should. I really enjoyed her Mistress of Rome- books 1 & 3 because they both have a catty deliciousness about them. I was expecting even more of that with the Borgias, but this is pretty tame. I think because it's told from the perspective of 2 fictional characters and the Pope's mistress. I feel distant from the family.

I recently read Blood & Beauty: The Borgias and that one I highly enjoyed. Not sure if you're familiar with Dunant's writing, but she can make the most mundane sound sick and twisted.

Also added to my large stack of library books today. (has no regrets)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments So, I mentioned that Unhinged was a Wonderland retelling...

But I didn't mention the manga I was reading was also a Wonderland retelling.

And I've just bought part of the spin-off of the manga...

So, apparently, I'm on a Wonderland binge.

This was unplanned.

Depends on what you're into. We all have a slightly different idea of "must read" here, lol.

So, what are you into?

message 82: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) David wrote: "I'm new to this whole goodreads thing. What are some must reads for fantasy? besides Lotr, got, which I love."

Sweet! If you haven't read Brandon Sanderson, I would say to DEFINITELY read his Mistborn trilogy.
Mistborn: The Final Empire
The Well of Ascension
The Hero of Ages
Then there's The Alloy of Law, which takes place in the same world, but quite a while after the main trilogy, so this should be read last.

I'd also recommend Stephen King's Dark Tower series. It's fantasy, but with many different genre-blends thrown in. The first book (The Gunslinger) is a little slow and dry, but it's short, and if you push through it, the second book is where the series really gets going. Or, if you're not feeling the first book, you CAN skip it and start with book 2 (The Drawing of the Three) and come back to the first book later. The story works both ways.

The Dresden Files, starting with Storm Front.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman

Horns & NOS4A2 by Joe Hill - These are not related stories, but they are both great horror/fantasy.

The Grimnoir Chronicles (Hard Magic, Spellbound, Warbound) by Larry Correia - I really enjoyed these on audio. :)

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

There are others that I think would probably be included - but I haven't got to them yet. Sooooooooooonnn...

Welcome to Goodreads and FOF. :)

DoodlePanda | 506 comments I'm currently just reading random books that I find on my Kindle... I have loads that I downloaded because they looked ok and were free or very cheap, but I never got around to reading.
For some reason there seems to be a lot of horror, I must at some point had a horror-download-moment... Been picking books just randomly and the last 4 or 5 have been horror. They have been fairly good ones though, so it's not all bad.

I'm thinking I might try to go fantasy on the next one though, I like to mix it up a bit.

Don't own an iPad but I have the app on my phone. Its way to small for me to do any serious reading - and I'm not going to do it on my computer.

I might never read most of them - I just checked and kindles are too expensive for a toss away item. :(
