Young adult fiction that I believe was set in the UK. Special needs students who ride the same school bus each tell the story of their weekend. I only remember two of the stories. One was a girl whose sister was getting married. The other a boy who visits a boarding school with his mother. I remember this character wearing a Man City sweatshirt. Students were most likely teenagers.

I read this book in late 94 or early 95.

Loosely framed by vignettes about the driver, Bertram, each chapter tells the story of a different passenger and the often tragic circumstances of the person's life. Victims of abuse and ignorance, the characters are portrayed as pitiable, not "other-abled." Rebecca, an adolescent "mongol" with Down syndrome, is cheated out of being in her sister's wedding because her aunts say she is "positively gross" and "we don't want any embarrassments"; Mickey, suffocated by his mother's good intentions, is trapped in an unresponsive body with a young man's restless mind and sexual desires; and Fleur, locked in a closet by her monstrous parents, is physically beautiful but emotionally stunted.
