That's a book which should be sold with a free box of tissues. The movie is delightful as well.

Khenan Bragador | 140 comments I feel like i'm waging a war of attrition against A World Undone: The Story of the Great War, 1914 to 1918, but i'll win...eventually.

i think my plan of breaking it up with other books is backfiring but oh well. also reading The BLDGBLOG Book , which is a part of the A to Z challenge
enjoying it so much so far!

Andrea | 2163 comments I finally began reading Hindsight by Melanie Casey yesterday, and I'm loving it! I feel a bit embarrassed that it's taken me so long to get to this one because I used to work with Mel, and I vividly remember the excitement around the publication of this, her debut novel. But I'm sure I'll make up for it by quickly catching up on instalments #2 and #3 throughout 2017.

Asa-Marie Webster | 34 comments Reading Watership Down and totally loving it. Can't believe I've never read it and it's so cool how I'm getting all these flashback memories of having watched the movie as a kid. Totally going to watch the movie again after I've read it.

Has anyone else read it or is it on your neglected reads list as well?

I have read it but you won't want to hear from me because I didn't like it:(
Most people do though so I will just sit in the corner quietly:)

message 1161: by Ryan (last edited Jan 25, 2017 03:09AM) (new)

Ryan I read that recently Helena. For a children's book it's a real acid trip. It's also one of those books that is so ingrained in our culture that we all assume we know the story - much like the Bible. In this case a lot of stuff I thought was in Alice's Adventures must be in the sequel instead.

I read a lot of books to my four year old and I'm looking forward to when I can read longer books like this one to her. When she's old enough to buddy read with me my life will be complete.

You're right Ryan...it's very trippy! I'm nearly finished and I think I'll need to mull it over for a few days before I review.

My son is 15 now so the days of reading to him are sadly over for us. Buddy reading is great. We still kind of do that...I read all his school English texts so we can talk about them. Make the most of it...special times. :)

I buddy read most of the Harry Potters with my boys when they got to the stage of reading harder books. Started off with bed time reading - they would read a few pages to me and then me reading them a chapter. By the second book we were buddy reading and I was the one having to keep up as they were sneaking in chapters after school.

Graeme Rodaughan I'm currently splitting my time between They'll Call It Treason by Jordon Greene They'll Call It Treason and Dracula by Bram Stoker Dracula.

The first is a modern thriller. The other, I'm sure everyone knows...

It's pretty dark and creepy and the main character is a very nasty sociopath, but apart from that I enjoyed the read. However if I remember correctly there were quite a few who hated it!

I have to admit, I might be pushing my daughter to young adult a little early because I love the genre so much and there are so many books I want to share with her. Maybe I should find a young adult buddy so I can talk about my faves with them : )

Here's a Young Adult thread you might be interested in - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

And the Buddy Read thread on Gemina which you can comment on (if you've read it) or read others' comments and perhaps decide to read it yourself.

Actually, as well as that one there's a few others if you'd like to browse through the folder

Funny you should mention Watership Down, I have just bought a second hand copy so that I can re-read it after many years. Read it as a teen, multiple times because I enjoyed it so much. I was quite horrified at the movie, I didn't think it was a kids story at all.

message 1188: by Tango (new)

Tango | 290 comments I'm reading The Brothers Karamazov on my iPad which is not my favourite way to read. Despite that I'm starting to get into the story. However I made the dumb mistake of printing off a character list (because the many variations on Russian names was getting confusing) that had a major spoiler on the first line.

message 1189: by Tess (new)

Tess McCallum (tess_mccallum) | 10 comments I've been on an Edgar Allan Poe binge lately. One of the great things about reading on the Kindle app is that when I come across a term or reference I don't understand, I simply highlight it and voila - Oxford dictionary or Wikipedia. Suddenly everything makes sense, unlike when we ground our way through the classic in high school barely comprehending half of it. Anyway, it's certainly given me a new appreciation for the classics.

Although Edgar Allan Poe isn't my usual genre, I'm finding him thoroughly entertaining. He's also given me a new found appreciation of shorts which I've not been a fan of in the past.

message 1192: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 1929 comments Mine is in fact an Aussie book for my February challenge.

The Coast A Journey Along Australia's Eastern Shores by Chris Hammer
In which Chris, a journalist (his impressive career includes more than twenty five years journalism, SBS, Dateline, The Bulletin, The Age), travels the East coast of Australia. Basically it is a journey of discovery and though I have just started it I love the 'voice' of the book.

It has sections on the GBR, Torres Strait, GC, NSW and Bass Strait. So excited by my reading choices right now.... Might have to go off and do some reading ;)
