SP 2016 10.8 License to Write (Cory Day's Task)
Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Got him - Carver is wonderful, hope you enjoy whatever you'll read."Thanks! And now he's just mentioned in the interview that Charles Bukowski was one of his heroes; no wonder I like both of them. This was the first poetry of Carver's that I've read and I didn't enjoy most of it. But his short stories are beyond great.

With the poetry, I was curious. I see he authored at least one screenplay. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond...
I'm going to add him to Narayan.

Anne BrontëFrom Anne's GR profile....." At the age of 19 she left Haworth and worked as a governess between 1839 and 1845.

I think in this instance, a governess does not work.

And I appreciate that.

Yes - got her. It appears they are the equivalent of professors in the US.
Not sure if her was a professor, as it only says "instructor" but Phillip Roth had a university teaching career up until 1991https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_...
Karen Michele wrote: "Could I have Abraham Verghese approved? He is a doctor and a professor."yes, thanks!
David Mitchell - teacher? From GR profile: "He lived for a year in Sicily, then moved to Hiroshima, Japan, where he taught English to technical students for eight years, before returning to England."

Yep!
Would Gayl Jones work for this one? From her Goodreads profile:
That same year she was a visiting lecturer at the University of Michigan, which hired her the following year as an assistant professor. She left her faculty position in 1983 and moved to Europe,

Yes, she works.
It's my own task, but I still don't trust myself to get some of the nuances correct right now. Nova Ren Suma seems to have taught in multiple places, but it's a little unclear what her exact title is: http://novaren.com/bio/
R.K. Narayan: "It took Narayan four years to obtain his bachelor's degree, a year longer than usual. After being persuaded by a friend that taking a master's degree (M.A.) would kill his interest in literature, he briefly held a job as a school teacher; however, he quit in protest when the headmaster of the school asked him to substitute for the physical training master." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._K...., third paragraph
Is "briefly" long enough for our task purposes?

You're good for her Cory. It says she teaches creative writing.

Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "...Trying to be consistent, we'll assume he needed a license, no matter how briefly. ;-)"Thank you! Too bad about the dust-up with the headmaster though.
I just started Under the Banyan Tree and Other Stories, and have a memoir and travel piece lined up too. He's a new author to me, and I'm enjoying his writing so far. I thought I should give him a try since we've named a task for him.

You're fine to have held off a bit!
Can you find an anthology or something for at least one of Diaz's essays? We have decided that published singly in magazines will not suffice for this task.
Wrong task, I told you I was going to bombard you! ;) This is for his teaching, he's a professor of creative writing at MIT.
John Le Carré taught at a prep school for a year: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_le..."When Ronnie declared bankruptcy in 1954, [le Carré] quit Oxford to teach at a boys' preparatory school."

That's what happens when I try to do things later in the day. (I'm an early bird.) ;-)
Yes to Diaz and le Carre.
