Joan novel geek
Are you interested in a buddy-read designed for geeks/swots/accas/grinds/puggas?
Do you like discussing homework type questions about symbolism, allusions to other books, foreshadowing?
I can't help it, I do, so I am hoping to set up a buddy read for folks like me.
I am looking for suggestions for the novel: my ideas are:
The Prisoner of Heaven or Lady of Hay or Between the World and Me
or Hotel of the Saints

The cartoon is from http://mathhombre.blogspot.com/2010/1...

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I don't think I have ever done a buddy read with homework style questions before but I would be up for trying one out with you, Joan. Lady of Hay is on my TBR so I wouldn't mind reading that one.

message 53: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I think Lady of Hay sounds interesting, but I am not up to doing a 600 page read, with homework and all, at this time. LOL, I do not know what any of those legends are except geeks.

message 54: by Joan (new)

Joan LOL Cherie that's just the thing for me it doesn't seem like work and it happens simultaneously with enjoying a novel, like breathing. I've been a geek since birth.

Prisoner of Heaven would be good except I have yet to read the second in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series.

"Lady of Hay" seems like probably like a book I categorize as 'not for me' though i'm willing to maybe having my mind changed.

Ta-Nehisi Coates' Between the World and Me is my top pick of the books you suggested.

The book of short stories by Ursula Hegi looks good, "Hotel of the Saints." However, I think short stories might be more difficult to discuss than a novel or book on a single subject. Too much going on. Too many different characters and plots.

I'd like to suggest Angelica Lost and Found as a possible buddy read with some in-depth discussion. Any interest?

Cherie and Tejas Janet,
I think you are correct "Lady of Hay" looks like just too much - I started it but set it aside for the deep, dark winter.
I'll be participating in my first buddy read soon for Different Seasons. So I will get back to this idea after that.

message 57: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Peggy, The one I nominated is first right now so I may need to do the same! Would the 3rd week be too late? I was thinking of reading the buddy read for The Gift of Rain but I can switch them around if necessary.

message 58: by Peggy (last edited Sep 26, 2016 07:21AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think the 3rd week is fine. It's not very long. Starting the 15th? Or the 22nd?

Or should we wait for when the toppler is? I'm not participating in the toppler this month but maybe you are?

message 59: by Tasha (new)

Tasha The 15th sounds great to me! I'm excited for this one. I really like Westerns but don't read many of them. Something about that time period is so interesting and a tough girl then is sure intriguing!!

message 60: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Perfect, let's do the 15th then :) I think this month will be my first two westerns, I'm excited! Like Cherie pointed out there's a lot of variety in the genre, and not just the stereotypical things that came to my mind.

I can set up the thread when I'm behind my computer tomorrow, but go ahead if you want to do it.

message 61: by Tasha (new)

Tasha great!!

Sarah | 18549 comments Is anyone up for reading or rereading The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins with me? I am particularly interested in reading it in the format that the author published it in, a part per week. There are 40 parts. And no cheating. Then we can discuss it each week. More details on the format can be read here http://www.web40571.clarahost.co.uk/w... and all parts are available to download for free there too. It would be good if there were a few of us as i wouldn't want to organise a buddy read only to pull out leaving just one person reading alone (given my classics history). I guess it's quite a commitment. That's 40 weeks reading the same book. That's nearly a year! I'm pretty sure it was either a group read or buddy read on here a while back so i know some of you have already read it. Anyone up for it?

EDIT: we could also read it on the same dates it was published (starts 23 Nov)?

Count me in! I just bought it in French but I might follow you and read it in English...

message 64: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I would like to read it at some point Sarah, but I have to think about the 40 weeks. I usually read my books one by one, and rarely have two going on at the same time. To read a few pages every Monday or so and fill the rest of the week with something else, and then turn back to The Woman in White a week later, and that for 40 weeks, I'm not sure if that works for me. I could give it a go but then I would feel bad for not sticking with the plan if I quit.

On the other hand, it's pretty chunky and I think I read gothic classics much slower than the average book, so it might be nice to not read it in one go while feeling like it's taking forever.

message 65: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oh wait, I thought it was gothic suspense, but now I read somewhere that it's horror. If it's that, I'm definitely out. Is it comparable to for example Rebecca in terms of atmosphere and suspense?

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Peggy wrote: "Oh wait, I thought it was gothic suspense, but now I read somewhere that it's horror. If it's that, I'm definitely out. Is it comparable to for example Rebecca in terms of atmospher..."

It's not a horror anything like what we have today in the genre. It's similar to Rebecca, at least what I recall of it. It's been awhile.

Just a comment on reading it "serialized". We've all watched series on tv where you see an episode weekly as the story progresses. This would be similar. You'd have the previous week's discussion to refresh your memory if you need.

message 67: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Exactly Janice. If we had been around then, we'd have had no choice but to read only the bit that had just been published then wait for the next bit. I have to say that i tend to binge watch tv series and can feel annoyed when i have to wait a week for the next one. I'm just wondering whether this way. Of reading would make it easier, more manageable to read, not because of it's length, but style.

message 68: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I compared it with series too, but somehow series stick better than books. And they have that nice recap at the beginning ;-) And I bingewatch too.

But you're right, now we have the discussion to fall back on, and it's likely that discussion lasts all through the week anyway.

Okay, I'm in! I prefer to get the ebook (pdfs are not nice to read on my ereader) but I don't think the ebook is divided into the 40 parts.

message 69: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Excellent. I guess you could reference the parts on the website? I wonder whether the parts are just chapters. I reckon it will be obvious. I might see if i can get hold of a copy to compare. I'll set up a thread when i get home later.

message 70: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yes, I will do that. I looked at it and one part is more than one chapter. I'll make a list of chapters per part later this week and post it in the thread.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I'm in too.

message 72: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Excellent. I just got the kindle version too as it's free.

message 73: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2098 comments Thanks for the tip, Sarah. I just got the free kindle version as well. I'm thinking about getting the Audible narration, it's only 1.23$, since our library doesn't have it as an audiobook and I think I would prefer to listen to it. But I think I will read it quicker than in 40 weeks.

message 74: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2098 comments Nooo, I don't like the narration at all! Glad I listened to the Audible sample before I bought it.

message 75: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments That's a shame. Well at least the kindle version is free.

message 76: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Did you check in librivox, Camilla? Many books in the public domain are narrated there, and it is free.

Thanks for the tip Sandra, I didn't think of looking there, will have a peek now.

message 79: by Joan (new)

Joan Excellent idea Sarah - count me in - I hope I have enough self-discipline to stick to the pace.
The Woman in White is more goose-bump inducing suspense than gory horror.

message 80: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Excellent! The more the merrier :-)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Camilla wrote: "Nooo, I don't like the narration at all! Glad I listened to the Audible sample before I bought it."

I think I tried the audible version and rejected it too, Camilla. I am interested in seeing how it was divided in installments. I read it twice already, but I might listen in on your comments. :0)

Heather Morris | 125 comments Sound very interesting Sarah! I'm not a huge fan of the classics but broken down like this it may very well make it easier to digest.

That's the idea. I'm not a fan of classics either which is why we thought we'd apprach it this way.

Excellent. There's quite a few of us going to be reading it. It should be good.

message 86: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Thomas (fisheuropa) I'm going to be re-reading The Silmarillion if anyone wants to join me. I'm going to be doing it in chunks along side Corey Olsen's lecture series: http://tolkienprofessor.com/lectures/...

Ooo... that sounds interesting. I'm tempted, but time is running away with me.

When are you thinking of reading it?

message 88: by Amanda (last edited Oct 07, 2016 03:03AM) (new)

Amanda Thomas (fisheuropa) I'm not really in a rush. I need to finish it in time for a work project in March. The seminar lectures are pretty lengthy, so I was thinking of doing 1-2 chapters a week starting in November.

message 89: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I'm headed to Mexico for a week in November, and then will be playing catch-up at work. If you wanted to start in December, I would join you.

message 90: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Thomas (fisheuropa) I can do December. I have a fair amount of travel in November too. :)

message 91: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'll keep an eye on things. I haven't read the Silmrillion yet so maybe I will join

message 92: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Can you set up a buddy read thread for the Silmarrian, Amanda? I'm on my cell phone for a couple more days or I would do it.

message 93: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Thomas (fisheuropa) Sure! I'll do that today.

message 94: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (trudyan) | 1779 comments TejasJanet, Cherie and I are planning a buddy read for H is for Hawk. What is the preferred start date - March? April? I have the book, so can start anytime.

Is anyone else interested?

message 95: by Joan (new)

Joan TrudyAn,
I'd like to join the buddy read for H is for Hawk. I don't have any preference about when we read it.

message 96: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments As you already have a number of you wanting to do a buddy read, probably best to create a post for it and then others can join with you and you can thrash out a start date in there.

message 97: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I will join you, TJ and Trudy and Joan - whenever you want to start. I am reading Old Man's War, which started today, and another with Almeta - since Janice dropped out and have nothing else pressing right now.
