SOLVED. YA/kids book where main boy has a label maker [s]

I read this book in either late elementary or early middle school about a boy who had a label maker. That's one of the few things I remember because I had no clue at the time what a label maker was so my dad got me one. I think the boy lived with his mom, but went to see his dad (either divorced or never married) and he lived in pretty poor conditions. I think the mom or step dad had a chihuahua that the boy didn't like or something. Googling variations of "kids story label maker" have yielded nothing. Thanks in advance!
