5.7 - Flag by Jasper Johns
Johns made over 40 works based on the US flag See it, reworking the traditional colors as a monochrome White Flag in 1955. Read a book with a genre that contains "Retellings" on its main book page.

Bea I always thought Retellings had to be fairy tales retold, but I found this book Emma by Alexander McCall Smith. Would it be OK to use it for this task? (a retelling of a Jane Austen story)

Thanks, Dlmrose. This is a relatively new genre for me, so I was unsure. I've only read a book based on fairy tales in the past.

Daphne (daphnesm) | 486 comments I've already read this and highly recommend it if anyone is in search a beautiful retellings collection: A Wild Swan: And Other Tales. There is a beautiful illustration for each story done by Yuko Shimizu that makes it even better. :)

If you prefer a female author that writes for women really well IMO, you can't go wrong with The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter :)

message 35: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 400 comments I have a question about genre. If it says that the specified genre needs to be a "main page genre" does that mean that any of the genres showing when you are on the goodreads page of the book counts? I saw in a previous posting (in message 2 of the questions/problems in completed tasks) that Fairest did not show retellings but when I went to the Fairest page it did, it was the sixth genre showing, so I wasn't sure if it had to be in the top three to count as main page genre.

Just wondering because I planned on reading Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West for that and the genre retellings shows but it is ninth genre on the book page, so I wanted to make sure it counted. Thank you!

It is the genre that shows on the main book page. But the display can change.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
