Deanery | 7 comments This one was my sister's favourite book as a child and I would like to surprise her with a copy of it, but I can't remember the name and I don't want to ask her because it would spoil the surprise. I only read it once and only remember a few details. The book was read in the 1980s but may be older.

Two kids - brother and sister (they may have had other siblings but I don't remember them being important to the story). I think the family moves to the country. The boy finds a trumpet and wants lessons to learn how to play it. I think the girl wants lessons to do something else (maybe learn another instrument) but there isn't money to spare for both and she gets upset that her parents are willing to pay for the boys lessons but not hers (I think she had a chance to have lesson before and didn't take advantage of it so they worry it will be wasted money again). She decides to grow a garden in order to raise money. I think she starts turning some overgrown land into a garden. I have the feeling she is specifically growing flowers for decoration rather than growing food. I think I recall discussion of the difference between growing asparagus to eat, and growing it to be a decorative plant. In the end, I think she raises the money she wanted - but decides she'd rather spend it on gardening than on what she originally wanted.
