I think this YA book is called Water... maybe? It's too generic to be any help in my search.
So this book has a culture of mermaids where not all of them have fish fins. The MC has human legs and gills. There's a prophesy that she'll be the cause of the destruction of her entire society if she gets pricked by some form of magical venom.
There's a championship in which she's helping her cousin(?) get the honor of magic venom, and during some kind of disaster she ends up getting pricked instead. Book 1 ends with her washed up on shore with the thing that pricked her, and she's gonna get sick and die because there's no one to make the venom not kill her instead of giving magical powers.
