So do you guys ever go thru a period where you find yourself going thru a phase of one bad read to another or maybe go thru a phase where most are 3 or 2 stars reads. Then finally you find some that are higher and it lifts you mood after so many bad or so so reads.

Thank you. My life is much better now. I'm married to a wonder, loving man.

That is fantastic. Good for you. I have a husband that isn't like my dad and grateful too.

I haven't read too many books that I would rate a 2. Quite a few 3's. I look forward to when the next J.D. Robb book is coming out or Jonathan Kellerman. That helps.

I'm an eclectic reader so my shelf is filled with a wonderful mix of genres and formats (eBooks, audiobooks and print). I'm never bored or fail to find something that satisfies my reading itches.

The only slump happens when I've over scheduled myself for the blog or author review requests/NetGalley. I fixed that at the beginning of the year and am now experiencing great enjoyment in my reading.

SB*needs low angst books* Ok I see. Your variety seems to help with not getting bored. I try to branch out more but I find I get irritated with things or characters in a book. I also have to relate to or like the heroine as well. I mean I love In Death but what keeps me reading is all characters as sometimes Eve can work my nerve personally. So a good story can help overcome annoying things in it.

Jonetta, how did you do that? That's how I'm feeling now. A bit overwhelmed. I have 4 books for NetGalley? And then when other authors here on GR ask for a review I have a hard time saying no. Then I have to prioritize the reviews on when they are being released. I reviewed 1 book for Lisa Scottoline, now the publisher keeps asking me to review her books directly thru my email. Sometimes I wish I could read just for pleasure again.

I'm a different type of reader. I don't have a "type" or "style" I prefer in characters or writing style. It's also unnecessary for me to connect with the character. It's the author's ability to storytell that hooks me. Can the author transport me into the story and make me feel what she/he wants me to feel.

I've always had a vivid imagination so a good storyteller is going to work well for me, no matter the genre. When I'm done, my level of satisfaction is going to be based on whether or not the author created a story I found myself wrapped up in.

Stop! You have no idea the hole I dug for myself. Still digging out but I'm no longer feeling guilty about it.

First, start accepting requests on your terms. If you're truly interested in reading the book, state that you will but based on your reading schedule. I'm clear about that and authors NEVER refuse my counter offer.

Next, take some time and reflect on your NetGalley choices. I now only download books where I'm caught up in a series or it's an auto read author. Rarely do I download a book now where I'm unfamiliar with the author.

Lastly, I keep a log of what I plan to read each month. When new requests come in, I check and see if I can handle it. If not, I'll pass or counter offer the reading schedule. I'll send you the link to my planning schedules if you're interested.

Hope this is helpful.

SB*needs low angst books* Jonetta, that is such a great way to read. I think I will keep this in mind with my next read and see if it puts things in a different light.

I read a lot of first person pov or dual first person pov and I think I tend to read it like I am getting to know them and if they feel real or care about their story. or like iy

It makes a huge difference, Songbyrd. I clear my head and just let the author create setting, plot and character. No pre-conceived notions here, just a blank slate:)

When I'm asked if I'm a plot or character driven reader, I'm at a loss as to which to pick. I guess it's neither. Living the story vicariously is all that matters to me. It's much more of a fun way to read. But then, it took me a long time to grow up and even then I was unwilling:)

Thank-you that could be so helpful. I do find myself telling them that I will have to read their book after some previous obligations and so far everyone has been fine with that.

September 6th is the next In Death book (Apprentice In Death) but I'm sure you know that.

Carol Mcclellan | 41 comments I have to reread books especially the last one of a series. I read so many different series that I forget which is which if I don't.

message 117: by Kerri (new)

Kerri Levine | 30 comments The simple answer to this question is yes. If its an author I love, such as Nora Roberts. then yes. In fact, I have been known to finish a NR book, then immediately turn right back to the first page and start again. My thoughts are that if it was so good the first time, then I'm bound to find more to love the second time through.

As an English (lit) major in college. I wish I had been so excited to do the same with the various works I was required to read then.

message 119: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Madsen | 7 comments I love to reread books. I always seem to find something I've missed in them. Or with the In Death series you I have found several references to other books in the series that I missed the first time through that helps with my understanding of the overall series.

Mdy | 224 comments I not only enjoy rereading a book I love, I'm finding that if I listen to it on tape I often get an entirely different perspective. And yes, I've been to know to 'relisten' to my favorite books and authors.

Mara Pemberton (marapem) I'm a relistener. I sometimes rereader.

message 122: by Paula (new)

Paula | 245 comments I have reread. I desire to get better at it though because there are so many books I thought were so deserving of a reread. The problem is that I still have a lot of good books on my TBR list.

message 123: by Karen (new)

Karen (rhyta) | 184 comments I do a lot of rereading, if I really love the story/characters then it is even better on another read. I usually notice new things the second (or more) time around. Sometimes I just want a comfortable read and I go to my faves. I just reread Night Broken by Patricia Briggs so I can start her new one Fire Touched. I read so many series that it helps to refresh my memory of what happened in the prior book.

Charlotte Craddock | 6 comments Most of my reading is re-reading, I'm really bad sometimes I'm reading a new book then get a craving to re-read another book (and mostly its the J.D.Robb series) I also usually re-read before an adaption comes out or after it - I do wonder if I should stop cuz its rare adaptions of books come anywhere near to the actually book or better it!

I agree! I try to switch between reading & listening to a book if I do a reread. I often learn little things I missed in a previous read.

I don't have time for a lot of rereads, but I definitely reread Favorites from time to time. Obviously, the In Death series is high on that list as I'm on my 3rd straight read though of the series...and my favorites within the series - I've read many times more than that. Many times, if I reread a book/series, it's for a buddy read or Book of the Month - something that I'm joining in with friends. And then, once in awhile, I just need the comfort of an old Favorite & I indulge myself. :)

SB*needs low angst books* I am a picky reader and I am finding that I do more re-reading when trying to find new books. I go for low angst romance books that don't have second chance love, secret baby plots or series that I can't read as standalone book. I usually go for heroines that are sweet and likable instead of really sarcastic or super kickass/badass like Eve because I relate to them better.

message 129: by Karenw (new)

Karenw | 32 comments Love re-reading In Death. Most others, once is enough.

message 130: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 47 comments I am now at a stage in my life where listening to an audio book is the norm. I am also a big fan of series books so often re-listen to the whole series more than one time. In Death is getting large enough that I have started breaking it down into 5-6 book sessions. Recently
I broke down and purchased the last 4 novellas. Now I am listening to the book before, the novella and the book after each of the novellas.

I also have more than one book going at a time. I like to keep at least one or two different series going at a time on the repeats along with first time listen or two. M

My sleep schedule is so strange that having multiple books is not a problem. There are a few books that I will listen to the whole book without stopping. The In Death books are always in this group on the first and second time through.

That is the other thing that I tend to do with this series. I listen to each book twice back to back to catch anything I missed on the first pass through.

SB*needs low angst books* You know I love a good re-read but I have to take a break from some books I re-read too. Like I love In Death series but I sometimes need to take a break from it too.

message 132: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) Since I am an audiobook person I'm a relistener of a favorite book.

message 133: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 63 comments I am only an occasional rereader (or rather relistener since I mostly use audiobooks now). The In Death series is one of the few that I reread which is why I joined the group in the first place!

When I'm under a lot of stress, ill or running errands, I need a book that doesn't require my full attention and relistening is ideal - I know the plot already, enjoyed it the first time and if I miss something, I'm not confused. I didn't used to be a rereader, so it's odd that I find myself a relistener.

While there are individual books I relisten to, the only series I relisten to often are In Death, Dresden, Pern, Harry Potter, Shannara, and 87th Prescinct (sp?) by Ed McBain.

I'm a perpetual rereader of the In Death series as I can't remember the last time I wasn't reading one of them again! Lol! I read one a month and when I'm through the series (yet again), I start it over again. There is no other series I do that with. I do have other favorite series that I love to reread - just not back to back.

message 135: by Linda (new)

Linda | 65 comments I have reread for most of my life - It started with Childrens books, then carried on to Georgette Heyer, Mary Stewart, Agatha Christie and Ngaio Marsh as a teenager. Even when I read to my children we could reread our favourites (JRR Tolkein, Wind in the Willows, CS Lewis etc, etc) I can still go back and read an Agatha Christie occasionally. I have favourite authors I can reread their books over and over again and others I can read the book once and not read again for years.
I'm not into the visual media - so it has always been books and music/audio for me.

message 136: by Readsall (new)

Readsall | 44 comments I'm a rereader also. I started out when I was a teenager with Edgar Rice Burroughs, Walter Farley and Marion Zimmer Bradley. Over the years, authors changed. Anne McCaffrey, Jim Butcher, Kim Harrison, Jayne Ann Krentz (under all three of her identities, Jayne Castle & Amanda Quick), Sherrilynn Kenyon, Patricia Briggs, L R Ward, Lee Child, Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child, Michael Connelly, James Lee Burke and W.E.B. Griffin. And of course Nora Roberts/J. D. Robb. The authors I reread the most, I purchase the books in hardback but there are a few I've purchased in multiple formats. L R Ward is one of those. I have her Black Dagger Brotherhood in audio, ebook, paperback and hardback. Though I am working to get the first three books in the series into hardback. And recently, as I upgrade to newer more powerful tablets, I've taken the older tablet and dedicated them to a genre of ebooks. I don't have room for all the books I'd like to have in print so I load them to tablets. As long as I have power, I have a library on hand.

SB*needs low angst books* You know I really love a good comfort re-read. One where I know the story but I just enjoy it and so I can come back on maybe a bad day or when I am not feeling anything new.

message 148: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments It depends. There are some books I like to re-read but mostly I re-listen. I go through stages. I might read a book a second time then forget about it for a year or two then go back and read again. Series, like In Death and JA Huss' books/audios I listen or read often.

Emma (emma6991) | 8 comments I usually hated re-reading; for the LOOONGEST time, until i stumbled upon this series. I reread whenever i'm in a reading funk, and I reread the entire series whenever there's a new book coming out. Since then, I've branched out to my other favorites. I'll reread them and feel happy. Since I'm in a funk now and can't seem to find a new book to read, i've just been rereading all my faves.
