I don't know if the book has to be read during the stay at our destination or not. It seems like it does. Since we haven't really discussed the next stop yet: Port of Spain (TT) – Leon(ES)

I think that books spelling out Leon/Spain or a Spanish author or a Spanish location are all probably pretty easy to find (although I did think the trilogy would be easy too -so much for that)
The detour with a child on the cover is probably pretty easy too. But is that 'a child' emphasized -as in only one child or is it at least one child?
Although I'm happy doing anything we pick and this detour may prove to be more manageable than some others, I'll vote for the author/setting of Spain this go around.

I think we had decided on the detour for stage 2 which is a child on the cover. Not sure if it has to be one one child or more than one. I guess we can ask?

Hmm not finding the detour planning. I see some ideas were tossed around but did we set all of them?
We should have some sort of tracking post near the beginning so we can plan ahead. I usually have to request my books through the library and it can sometimes take awhile :D

I've edited my introduction post (see post 6) on the first page to have the Itinerary up near the top.

My understanding is that we settled on doing detours for stages 1, 2, 5, 6, and 8

I've done a brief search and am having trouble finding ANY options let alone multiple. Might be worth it to do a spell-out for that one.

Maybe Chili? Will have to clarify when we get to that week. Kona would be the easiest all around lol.

I am taking it as the country we are travelling TO.So we are going to Vildivia in Chili - so Chili would be the country.
Do we know if we pitch in and 5 of us each take a letter - or does everyone have to read 5 books each to spell out the word?
I'm guess 5 of us do the task!
Already have my second book picked out for the round 2 detour. I will be reading: Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. Worked out well as it is sitting at the library waiting for me :D

Looks like we might want to plan on Vildivia. Chili wouldn't get us max points.

HI,
Yes it would be Vildivia in Chilli.
If you decide to do Chilli just remember it is not enough letters to get maximum points (as you need 6 members to contribute to get the additional 15 points). However, if you want to do that it doesn't matter how you divide the spell it out. It comes down to how many points you want.
For example, one person could do the whole spell it out and then you could just take the 10 points for completing and move on ;
or two people may take letters to complete and the rest of the team reads 'anything' that week and then you get 10 for completing the spell it out and 10 for everyone having read a book.
You only need to spell the word once, so you don't need every member to spell out the whole word, just have at least 6 members do at least one letter each to get the max. points

I'm taking it as a child - I would go for The Horse and His Boy but that is only because I love the Narnia books and this is one of the least popular ones and I don't understand why

We are supposed to self manage as much as possible which means making some of the calls as a group...that being said, I feel that more than one child is DEFINITELY okay...that is my vote on it. =)

Yeah, I am also okay with everyone finding what they would like for this and taking a leftover letter.
Hey Sally - on your first post with our itinerary would you be able to keep track of who is finished with which books at each stop so we know what we are waiting on? Its on msg 82 right now, which got buried lol :D

No problem Erika! I know things come up...I've had a crazy week this past week myself. I can't speak for everyone, but I don't mind this challenge being more relaxed and laid back.
Oh yeah! I recently started 2 new jobs and one of them is being pretty awesome about offering me hours so i'm getting into the swing of things. :)

Choose between:
TASK
The task to complete at each stop is determined by the team. The team can either:
(a) Read books set in that country or by an author of that country, or
(b) Complete a spell-it-out of that country or city
or
DETOUR
A "detour" may be chosen at each stop by the team instead of completing a task.
• Each team will be able to do a maximum of 5 detours over the course of the challenge
• A detour requires at least 4 members of the team to complete that goal before the detour is considered complete.
Sally, we send a message of our point total to the NBRC Travel Agent once we finish a stop. I'm going to go ahead and send a message now, since it looks like we're done. I will also send a message out to all team members that we are ready to start at Stop 2 since it has been awhile, just so everyone knows.
Do we have a goal end date in mind for this stop? The book I originally planned to read I had to return to the library so I'm trying to find something new.

Jacki, based on how we did stop 1, I think we are doing this challenge at a pretty relaxed pace. You have time to find a book and read it. Don't feel pressured to have to rush, we will finish when we finish. :) I hope this answers your question somewhat. I guess a definitive answer is that we really haven't set a goal for an end date.
If everyone wants to set an end date, or time amount at each stop, then we should talk about that...but as I said before, I don't mind having this as a more relaxed and laid back paced challenge...especially since I have other challenges going, making this one more laid back on deadlines is less pressure. I'm pretty sure Sally said she's okay with that it being more laid back. However, that being said, I'm thinking we probably should at least say no more than 3 weeks to a month at each stop or we'll be doing this challenge forever, haha. If we get them done sooner than that then we can move on to the next one. (The 3 weeks to a month is in no means set in stone, just an opinion I'm throwing out there)
I vote for a maximum time of 3 weeks. If it goes any longer I'd be likely to forget I'm doing it. We don't have to have everyone complete every challenge for it to be considered 'complete' and there will be times when some of us simply can't. I like the slow and steady progress. For now I have turned the ringer off my phone and plan to delete all messages until Super Tuesday preliminary voting is over. I'm going to find a safe corner where no politicians or their door to door canvasers or recorded messages can find me and start on my book! The Elegance of the Hedgehog. It's brutal out there.

I was just wondering for the next stop are we doing the detour challenge? I was also wondering if you knew whether if a book I read now works for a challenge later down the road does it count? Or does it only count if I read it during the week or so we are at that stop?
