I'm not sure if I can post this sort of thing here, but I didn't see anything advising against it so hopefully it's okay.

I usually have no problem thinking of fictional names to include in my work, but I'm absolutely stumped on what to call this fictional bar I'm writing about. It's a sports bar sort of place in America. They have junk food (chicken wings, nacho chips, mozzarella sticks) and beer. Nothing too fancy.

Big Green Dog Bar & Grill
Fat Dog Bar
Mad Dog Tavern
Filth Bar & Grill
Sports Bar
Willy's Bar
Willy's Sports Bar
Out Drinking Tavern
The Lazy Duck Bar
What Bar

I feel like everything I come up with is too hokey.

Anyone have any ideas?

Rebecca Timberlake (rebeccatimberlake) | 13 comments I like The Lazy Duck Bar and What Bar.

Bar names are hokey, period, I think. One of my favorite fictional bar names of all time has to be The Bar in Gone Girl. In that, it reflected the kind of people Nick and Go were- which is not very creative- so it was funny, and informative for the book. If the bar is owned by one of your characters, that could help guide what to call it. If it's just a bar they go to, then how memorable the name is depends on how important it is to the story. If it's not a big part of your story, Mad Dog Tavern or Willy's Bar would work.

Micah Sisk (micahrsisk) | 1042 comments A sports bar in the US.

That's like practically every bar in the US. Even Mexican and Indian restaurants in my town at least two big screen TVs constantly set on sports channels.

Most sports bars have the same naming convention. Basically you just have to follow this Sports Bar Name Generator: http://truthfacts.com/img/truth_facts...

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) Go with something you can nickname. I've got a bar called the Five Penny pub and one character calls it the Nickle while another simply calls it the Penny. Nicknames, both loving and derogatory, seem to go hand in hand with sports bars here.

Of your suggestions, I like The Lazy Duck and if I was a frequent patron, my nickname for it would be The Lazy Joke, based on the 'Two guys walk into a bar. You would think the second one would have ducked' joke. Also, I can see it being something of an easy slip into something crude that rhymes with duck.

Lavern Winters (grandmapeachy) | 12 comments We have an "I Don't Care Bar & Grill" here. Where do you want to go? I don't care.

There is also one called Boondocks

There are just too many possibilities. Blank street tavern, SFD bar and grill , Dinkies, Cork and Cap,

James Leth | 27 comments I used to work with people who frequented a bar called The Office. Where were you all evening? Late night at the office.

'The Fifty Yard Line' is great. That's where everyone wants to sit!

Owen O'Neill (owen_r_oneill) | 1509 comments Lots of good ideas here. Of the originals, I like the Lazy Duck.

Another approach is to name the bar after the owner, or the owner's nickname: Sassy O's might be an example.

There was also bar/hangout where a friend of mine went to school in the early 80s called Munch & Touch. I can't remember if that was the official name or just what everyone called it.

I like the Lazy Duck Bar... especially after Cristina's comment.

Additionally, you could base if off of the city in the US. If you know the exact city, you could use a college mascot (If it's based in Tempe, AZ it could be Sun Devil's Bar...). Or use the population demographics. Marquette, MI has a high Finnish population and the word sauna (apparently it's pronounced Sow-na) is a Finnish word. So that bar could be named The Sauna.

What about Raise the Bar?

message 20: by Ai (new)

Shiina Ai (shiina_ai) | 30 comments 1) Pigsty
- pretty much referring to how smelly, sweaty, pot bellied men bump against each other in the bar. No, it's not an insult, it's just additional characteristic of the bar. It's a funny name, isn't it?

2) Red Rooster Bar & Beer
- because you sell chicken, the red refers to passed out drunk patrons.

3) Laugh & Dine
- admittedly, this may be more suitable for a family restaurant.

Feel free to use any of these if it strikes your fancy. It's not copyrighted.
