If I was going to recommend a Gemmell book or series it would be the Troy series. In fact it might be my favorite series of all time. His wife Stella finished the last book so, it kind of takes a smoothing out path but she did a great job finishing a great series. But the Rigante books are a lot of fun too.

Hudson (bostonrich) I am reading The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive, #1) by Brandon Sanderson The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson.

This will be my first five star rating in 2016. This book is fantastic!

I've heard he gets better as he matured as an author. That said I've only read Legend, and absolutely enjoyed it. So if that's true, his later novels must be truly fantastic!

Ellis wrote: "The Ministry of Fear by Graham Greene"

I have yet to read his works, but I am quite fond of the Fritz Lang film, as well as The Third Man, another film adaptation of his work.

Heather | 35 comments Started February with Pet Sematary and The Eye of the World. Both awesome reads though now I'm firmly entrenched in the Wheel of Time series so onward to The Great Hunt

message 109: by Margret (new)

Margret Taking a break from the Lies of Locke Lamora only because my copy of Morning Star came in yesterday, and I had chills from the first page. I have to say that this series has rocked my world.

I can also second the Troy series, it was fabulous. I hadn't read any Gemmell before that but am a new fan now. Not once did I feel like the characters were one dimensional, and the writing was decadent.

Morning Star for me too, right from the beginning it's been a roller coaster!

Slipped Infidel: Bel Dame Apocrypha in after Death in Dulgath, great too.

Enjoy! Jal and Snorri, great prose, witty dialogues and a flowing plot. I'm eagerly waiting for The Wheel of Osheim.

I'm currently reading The Complete Tawny Man Trilogy: Fool's Errand, The Golden Fool, Fool's Fate, totally hooked from page 1. That's nice because I was uncertain whether to continue with the series or not, I liked Robin Hobb The Liveship Traders Trilogy 3 Books Collection Set but it fell short of my expectations.

message 114: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) Morning Star totally rocked my socks. Still processing that series, it will need a reread at some point. Really good stuff.

Bout 80% through The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and absolutely loving it. This is probably going to make a case for my favorite read of 2016 so far. Has a great feeling to it; have seen some people compare it to Firefly in feel and I totally get that.

Lára | 479 comments I´ve added Song of the Nile to my list, and I´ve actually read the 1st book! :D

Reading is going smoothly now, since I´m reading 10 books (I tend to get bored very easily so the more books I´m reading, the more interested in finishing them all I am) + couple of manga I´m following: Black Butler, Akatsuki no Yona, Ten Count and Tokyo Ghoul and manga I´m curentlly collecting (it´s completed, not ongoing like other mentioned), Blade of Immortal.

I believe I´ll finish all of the books, except the ones I´m studying from (A History of India, Egyptian Mythology and Hindu Gods and Goddesses) by the end of the month.

I'm exactly the same. It sounds counter-intuitive to read so many books at once, but somehow it helps me finish a lot more books than if I tried reading them one at a time. It does mean I have half-finished books scattered all over the house, though!

I'm waiting for a couple of thrillers that I've got on hold at the library, so I'm reading some YA fantasy in the meantime: Angelfall and Crown of Midnight. So far, I'm enjoying Crown of Midnight a lot more than I did the first book. Lots more action and intrigue!

I didn't expect to enjoy Angelfall, I read it for a one-word a-z. I ended up reading the set.

I've just started Black Sun Rising by C.S. Friedman. Going old school!

Tracey the Lizard Queen Just finished Shadows of Self. I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped I would.

Dan (TheGreatBeast) Just finished Swords & Dark Magic: The New Sword and Sorcery and wrote a review.

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Overall a fantastic anthology, not exactly entirely "The New Sword and Sorcery" as it purports to be, but it may be all the better for that. Great variety of authors and stories. And it's lead me to some fantastic authors whose works I look forward to exploring.

Now just focusing on The Dragonbone Chair and my continuing journey through Narnia with my girlfriend until I'm done both.

message 131: by Margret (new)

Margret Finally finished Morning Star, it was so wonderful. Diabolical and funny and full of surprises like the rest of the series. And now back to the Gentleman Bastards!

Isn't it great. I've read Morning Star, Snakewood, Infidel, Rapture, The Death of Dulgath, Shadow and Bone and now on Siege and Storm. It's a good month.

Three more to catch up on then I'll be at the sister group reads...

message 133: by Scott (new)

They are excellent. I have different covers: The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive, #1) by Brandon Sanderson Words of Radiance (The Stormlight Archive, #2) by Brandon Sanderson

message 137: by Dan (new)

Dan (TheGreatBeast) Also pretty cool covers, but for me there's nothing like a Whelan original!

I hadn't heard of the sister group... I'm damn tempted to join, but between this group and the Sword & Sorcery group I'm in already I don't think I'd ever get to the other books I want to read.

message 138: by Margret (new)

Margret Helen- I had at least 2 Sevro related heart attacks!

I love the sister group, it's good motivation to keep working on the series at a pace that's not too fast

Palash (naikon) | 63 comments Hey guys, I am thinking of starting either Mistborn series or Stormlight archives series. Which one of these 2 should I read first?

message 141: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) Personally I'd recommend Mistborn to start. It's an already completed trilogy with a wicked magic system, very fun books

Stormlight is good as well but that series will be going on for a long time, planned 10 books and only 2 have been published so far

I am nearly finished with the Mistborn series and it is fantastic. I highly recommend this series. If you want to read a great completed fantasy series I would also recommend Theft of SwordsRise of EmpireHeir of Novronthis series by Michael J Sullivan is by far one of my the best fantasy series I have ever read. You will not be disappointed.

message 145: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) Second the Ryria books. They really surprised me when I read them originally. Great series that continually builds on itself, great characters as well

Any of Michael's (I've put myself on first name terms!) , this month's group read is his and effectively stands alone, so you could try that and see if you like his style.

Palash (naikon) | 63 comments Thank u all for the responses. So, it seems I will now start reading The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson . Mistborn is definitely better to start with than the Stormlight Archives imo, I hope you enjoy it :)
Here is another good first Sanderson, if you ever need one: The Emperor's Soul. It's just around 200 pages long and majorly takes place in one and the same room, but the magic system is so totally unique and fascinating here, it is absolutely astounding.

Helen wrote: "Morning Star for me too, right from the beginning it's been a roller coaster!

Roller coaster is an understatement in this case, lol.
I finished Morning Star, too this month (review) and needed to take a complete break from reading anything for a day or two afterwards, it was so intense.
I still loved the whole Red Rising series though.

Since I needed something light afterwards, I then read Steelheart, which was quite entertaining, and now I am continuing the Reckoner series with Firefight. I am so curious to finish the series since Calamity, the last book in it, has absolutely controversial reviews among my Goodreads friends (anything from 1-5 stars from even hardcore Sanderson fans is there and I can't wait to find out why).
