A Reaper of Stone is a special novella. A story which has enough going for it in every area (characters, world building, and story) to make it one of the best short works of fantasy fiction which I have read in a while. Full of colorful drama, thoughtful introspection, and selective action, Mr. Gelineau and Mr. King have crafted a tale which left me wanting more of everything!

The tale begins with a short prologue introducing our main character, Elinor, as seen through the eyes of her friend Conbert. The two meeting one another in the most spectacular of ways.

From here, the story flashes forward several years. Conbert and Elinor now mature individuals cast back together by the “reaping.” This ancient customs sees the King’s Reaper (Elinor) and Royal Engineer (Conbert) on a royal mission to dismantle the ancient, powerful keep of Last Dawn when the royal bloodline comes to an end there. And while these old friends are honorable adherents to their chosen professions, they both feel particularly loath to take down this bastion of law and order in the wilds.

Our protagonists’ angst comes less from any love of Last Dawn and more from their dislike of the soon-to-be lord of this land a fellow by the name of Lord Piersym and his “Razor” Ephed. Both of these individuals represent all that our friends find disgusting and worthy of hate about the kingdom’s arrogant nobility and their “First Blades.”

This hesitance soon grows as Elinor befriends the remaining followers of the deceased Lady of Last Dawn and uncovering a secret which forces her to make a fateful decision!

All in all, A Reaper of Stone was more than I expected. Not only did the authors tell a short, engrossing story, they also endowed it with enough depth and weight of history to turn this land and its people into a living breathing fantasy world. Something which I really wasn’t expecting from such a quick read. The only criticism I can level at it is that the fun was over much too quickly.

I received this novella for free from the authors and Netgalley in return for a honest and unbiased review. The opinion you have read is mine alone and was not influenced by anyone else.

5 Words: Perfect length for a cuppa.

This was a fantastic novella.

For being so short, it certainly packs a punch, with a strong story and characters. I found that once I started reading I couldn't put it down, and I loved the story itself with its twists and turns.

I will absolutely be reading on in this series and reading more by these authors.

I bought this on Amazon and was the provided with a copy for review via Net Galley.

"A Lady is dead. Her noble line ended. And the King’s Reaper has come to reclaim her land and her home. In the marches of Aedaron, only one thing is for certain. All keeps of the old world must fall."

How the actual hell does this book have only 77 (kindle) pages? So many things happened and there’s an actual character development. I applaud the authors.I mean, who doesn’t want to read about the King’s Reaper? The story is really interesting and Elinor is definitely a memorable character.I enjoyed reading about her adventures. If you’re looking for something refreshing and captivating then this is the book for you.

Good writing, decent story. I like short stories, but not sure how well this works as a fantasy. Perhaps if I was more invested in the world through a previous novel I would have enjoyed this more. Nevertheless it was a well written story filled with adventure.3/5

It's that time of the month again! Not the one which involves Ibuprofen and men having to go down to the old pub instead, but that time where Cindy and I are teaming up again for a double review!*
aplausos
1
What were your thoughts/expectations before reading this book?
Cindy: Hm.. I try not to do a lot of thinking lately (fatherly advice), but the cover seemed awesome and I really liked the blurb. So when Anne gave this book as an option for out buddy read, it was not a difficult choice to make :’) I’ll never get enough from fantasy, NEVER.

Anne: I can't remember ever having read something by a writer duo, so I was quite curious how that would turn out  (EDIT: I read Weis&Hickman *facepalms*). The cover and the blurb made me think this was going to be awesome as well. The girl on the cover kinda looks like Daenerys Targaryen. With a huge sword. *makes heart with fingers*

Who is the main character and what did you think of him/her?

Anne: The main character is Elinor, the King's agent, lieutenant and/or Reaper. The term Reaper made me think of souls and, well, death, but being a Reaper of stone literally means being a reaper of stone. Keeps and castles in this case. Although there's also a slightly more magical meaning to it in this story, but I'll let you find that out for yourselves. So yes, back to Elinor. Wow, she is one bad ass chick! There are different varieties of bad ass chicks, though. You have the ones who are bad ass, but don't feel any empathy or are terribly arrogant. And there are the ones who know how to fight like a true warrior but keep whining about their emotions constantly. Elinor is neither one of these. She has empathy but doesn't whine like a baby. And her fighting skills are excellent, but she never becomes arrogant about it.

TL; DR: Elinor is the perfect bad ass chick! Someone I'd like to be and definitely someone I'd like to read more about.

Cindy: Anne... you’ve said it all... girl... leave something for me okay! But, just to give my opinion, Elinor was really awesome :D

What about the other characters?

Cindy: Yeah what about them? Well, first of all, they were there, and second of all... yeah they were actually there. No, just kidding. Even though this is a short story, there was character development and a great set of minor characters. Each of them had their own personality and even though there wasn’t a lot of time to get to know each other, they were well worked out. They made this short story, along with other aspects, not feel as a short. I loved the mystical kind of old character that was put into this story. Read the book and you’ll know what I’m trying to say.
I also really liked the ‘realistic’ feel, as far as fantasy can be considered realistic of course. The characters really did show how that world was ruled by the aristocracy, in a way they contributed to the world building.

Anne: There were definitely other characters there *nods*. And yes, the mystical character *whooooooos*, I loved that one as well!

What did you think of the plot and the world building?

Anne: As for the plot, I thought it was grand. The prologue started off with a bang and it didn't disappoint afterwards anymore either. The story was fairly original, emotional, violent and just all-around cool. There were some surprises. No OMFG, WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED?!-ones, yet nevertheless: surprises. I think with the Goodreads blurb and all the other information in this review, it would be a shame to tell you more about the story because it's only a novella and you're supposed to discover it on your own.

What I can say is that the world building was pretty neat. It soon became apparent that the world of Aedaron has magical/mythical elements in it. Like these giant killer worms that live underground and come up and devour you if you make too much noise/movement. Something like this....
Massacre-Wurm-MtG-Art.jpg
...yet with a less rocky scenery. The ones in this book live under fields of grass. The whole system of law and order was also intriguing. But...MEGA GIANT KILLER WORMS!!!

*quietly passes the mic to Cindy*

Cindy: *silently screams* yeah, so there’s that. And since Anne already told you guys about everything we are allowed to tell you in this review, I’ll just sit and wave.

Anne: Ahaha :') *goes off to a quiet corner and lets Cindy do all the talking (and waving)*

Cindy: No, but really, the plot was great. At first, I expected it to go one way, then something altogether different happened and I was quite amazed. Unlike Anne, I did experience OMFG WTH moments (giant killer worms... come on... who could have thought).

This book is #1 in a series and also #1 in something like a Saga called Echo of The Ascended. All the books/stories take place in the same world. Knowing that, how badly do you want to read all the other parts in the series now?

Cindy: Consider me sold. I’m a sucker for these kinds of things.

Anne: Badly might be a bit of an overstatement, but I've put them all on my TBR-list.

What did you have for breakfast this morning?

Anne: A big bowl of sauerkraut?
Cindy: My soul, and oatmeal.

If you could be transported into this world, would you like to go there and what kind of role would you play in it?

Anne: I would, but as with any other medieval kind of setting, only if it's a return ticket. I'd be terrified if I was trapped in the past, let alone in a world with huge flesh-eating worms! If I could go there (and back again), however, I would want to be a kick ass fighter like Elinor for sure. I mean, I'd usually go for something like a herbalist/healer but not with this one; slashing up evil worm jaws with my broadsword of justice it is!

Cindy: Yes *nods fervently* Yes I would. I’d probably be terrified, pee my pants (I don’t do dresses really), and try to run away screaming, but I would definitely go there. My role would probably be an engineer of some kind, I love building and destroying stuff.

Anne:  Oh dear, remind me to Cindy-proof my house if you ever come this way...:')

Cindy: You’ll be fine! I only destroy things of people I generally dislike :P So I guess you're safe ^_^ (or are you…)

Anne: *shifty eyes* Let's move on to the final verdict then!

1drumroll

Cindy: 4 stars, I had expected more pages, though, so I was a bit disappointed there. But nevertheless, it was a great short that had everything I’d ever hoped for… IN A SHORT?! I’d never expected to be so happy after reading this.

Anne: I'm totally agreeing with Cindy here (what else's new) and giving it 4 brownies. I wish it had a 100 more pages. I know, I know, it's a freaking novella, but still! And Cindy's right (again) about there being so much detail in here for such a short story!

We saw a couple authors do this and thought it was a very cool way to talk about what we’re up to.

A Reaper of Stone is our homage to all the classic, epic fantasy tales of our childhood. To the great heroes (both the authors and the characters in their pages) who filled our hearts and imaginations with awe and wonder.

The series is an epic tale about a young hero on a grand quest. There are great myths and legends, fantastic monsters, old magic, ancient wonders, magically gifted duelists, and dark secrets that begin emerging from the shadows. But at its heart, it’s a personal story about friendship, love, and loss. A story about three friends who once believed in each other above all else.

The complete story is told through a series of novellas. Think of it like your favorite episode-based TV show. Each novella can stand on its own, but when read together, it tells the fuller story.

A Reaper of Stone is one of the four series in Echoes of the Ascended.

Echoes of the Ascended is a series of series.

It follows the lives of five orphans. Each series features different characters. Each is a different kind of tale.

Read one, two, three, or all the series to customize your own unique, personal experience into the grander story of Aedaron.

Elinor is one of the King's Reapers. Her duty is to destroy the old and usher in the new. Most specifically for the changeover of property when a noble line has ended. Elinor finds herself in the position to do what's easy or do what's right.

A Reaper of Stone is the first short story of a much larger series Echoes of the Ascended. I, not understanding that series was split into bite size bits, had already read some of the stories farther along in the series and now I'm getting back to the beginning.

A Reaper of Stone is a good short story, but it feels more like a novella in the middle of two larger novels. The story drops the reader in with little explanation on anything really. Even after reading the description and the story I couldn't completely explain what a reaper is or any of the many other things just mentioned in the story.

Despite being unaware of a great many things I enjoyed the character development of Elinor. Elinor is an orphan that joined the academy. Unfortunately most at the academy were nobles that despised the fact that an orphan could join their ranks. As is to be expected Elinor has been forced to endure ridicule and much worse because of her orphan background. Now as an adult and an officer of the King, little has changed in the way nobles and those who serve them treat Elinor.

A Reaper of Stone has rekindled my interest in the Echoes of the Ascended series. Though I do hope all the stories aren't as small and lacking explanation.

ARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A unique and refreshing read! I'm pleasantly surprised by how the story turned out and for such a short read you get the full package.

The story starts with how Conbert first met Elinor and then proceeds with the story, where a few years later he and Elinor and the people of the now deceased Lady Kian Lliane have to face the battle of their lives.

description

I really liked Elinor's character. She is the main hero of this story. She's a really strong, loyal, young character, that at first sees the world with grim eyes. In her younger years she had to learn the hard way that sometimes fighting for something can only result in nothing. But her point of view changes when she meets a younger version of herself, Tae. She shows Elinor that there are still some things worth fighting for and that no matter how bad the situation may be, there is always hope for better times.

A Reaper of Stone is truly an inspiring story. There is tragedy, heartbreak, treachery but there is also bravery, hope and victory. A journey that's worth reading!

I received this book from Netgalley in return for an honest review.

4 Stars

As a firmly established cover art magpie, I took one look at the beautiful artwork for A Reaper of Stone and thought ‘this is the novella for me!’; a novella which turned out to be extremely well written, incredibly enjoyable and had me on the hunt for more literary creations by Gelineau and King. This is a fast-paced fantasy novella which succeeds in drawing you into a world which appears intricate and fully realised, all in less than a hundred pages.

-

A Reaper of Stone follows the story of Elinor, a Reaper for the King who fells keeps and brings lands under his dominion. Elinor journeys with a team of engineers, a retinue of tiresome and entitled nobles, and a company of deadly Razors, those who are skilled with weapons and trained in magic fuelled combat. As they make their way through the lands of Aedaron, strongholds are razed to the ground, claimants are removed from power and the will of the King (and often his petty nobles) is at all times enforced.

There are some things in this new world they are creating, however, that weigh heavily on Elinor’s shoulders and, fuelled by her dreams of the heroes and valiant deeds of legend, the mission on which she is sent may not be the one she fulfils.

-

The world of Aedaron appears to have the depth and scope of a much lengthier narrative and, together with its inhabitants, is described in enough detail to keep the story flowing and give it a sense of realism that is sometimes lost in novellas. There is a sense of a greater world beyond what we read, a world full of history, myth and legend which lurks beneath the surface and works together with the narrative to create the impression of reading a much longer novel.

The people and monsters which inhabit Aedaron are extremely well depicted, and the characters, whilst reminiscent of those who grace the pages of many fantasy epics, use this recognition to connect fully with the reader. Elinor is a multifaceted protagonist who makes a charming fantasy heroine – a heroine who stands up for what is right whilst wielding a mace like a badass – and the side characters are suitably detailed to become firmly established in the imagination.

Gelineau and King have created a multi-layered world which resounds with the influence of epic and traditional fantasy yet unfolds in the fast-paced and action-filled narrative which we’ve come to expect from modern fantasy. The language used throughout is lyrical and descriptive, giving depth to the world and its creatures whilst driving the story and the action forward at all times. Gelineau and King have fashioned a universe I would wish to return to time and time again.

-

If you want a short read to break up those long tomes then look no further; A Reaper of Stone has the essence of a traditional fantasy epic, full of adventure and beautiful, lyrical prose, in well under a hundred pages. And luckily for us, Gelineau and King plan on publishing many more ‘Echoes’ with the promise of another Elinor Ascended novella in the near future. I for one cannot wait.

A reaper of stone is an epic fantasy short novella, and I was surprised at how it was good and well written as a short novella. And to be honest I didn’t know I would like this novella this much. but I wish the authors had worked more on the characters. This novella could be a great YA fantasy series! But the world they created, the writing style, the pace and any other thing was good!

Theis review is for both stories of the "Reaper of Stone" cycle.

These two stories I'm about to present you were my first meeting with authors Mark Gelineau and Joe King and oh, how good a meeting it was! They are creating a fantastic world closed in seemingly too little pages. It's fascinating how much goodness can be presented in such short stories.

A Reaper of Stone

The first story of the series and the first one that shows us Elinor with all her might. She's a fascinating character. Strong minded, loyal and good with her sword. The first time we meet her she does the impossible - kills two of the creatures everyone's so afraid of. What's the better way to present a heroine, right?

From that point on the story only gets better.

Elinor will have some hard decisions to make. Some of them will change her life. Some will almost kill her.

Broken Banners

After what happened in Timberline, Elinor and Con find themselves without a team. They wonder through the kingdom until they find their slaughtered brothers and sisters. What else could they do, but to find out what happened and avenge them?

This time, we're introduced to a new character - Aldis. A former friend of Elinor from the academy days. He's supposed to be leading the 95th regiment to deal with yet another keep that's supposed to be destroyed. It so happened the keep was taken by a new ruler - a bandit leader and his hoard.

Elinor seems to be unstoppable when it goes to bringing justice and saving people. No matter the consequences she's willing to do the right thing. Even if the situation seems hopeless. But is it really? Her reputation surely is on her side. And the people she's with won't leave her either.

Both of the stories have a proper amount of world building that will help you understand how it all works, why everything is happening and what would happen otherwise. I'm really surprised how great job was done here to keep a balance between the action and the world building. And let's not forget about the characters. Each of them has their place and meaning. Obviously, Elinor is the most important person in both stories, but we have

And let's not forget about the characters. Each of them has their place and meaning. Obviously, Elinor is the most important person in both stories, but we have a chance to observe the world from other points of view too. It might be bothersome to some, but I think it was a good solution to reveal some parts of the story and to show how others see Elinor. Oh, and you know what? No romance! It's extremely refreshing to find a story where main characters can be just friends.

I wish I could already read the next installment of these stories. There's a hint at the end of what might come. Can't wait!

My review can also be found on our blog Paein and Ms4Tune

I was thoroughly surprised by how well this was written and how much thought had gone into the world-building and character development. It had all the key elements of a high/epic fantasy novel and even though it was only 90 pages long it still managed to pack a punch!

A Reaper of Stone begins with the first time Conbert and Elinor met and sets the characters up wonderfully. Elinor is a young orphan and a fearless cadet, determined to prove herself in a world full of snobbish and brutish nobles. Conbert is an older, kind noble who is surprised by how headstrong Elinor is, and learns quickly, to never under-estimate her.

Elinor is a strong and easily likeable character. It didn’t take me long to realise that she will be a firm favourite of mine. I wished there had been a little more insight into the old beliefs and how they influenced characters, such as Tae but it’s hard to do that in a Novella. Although saying that, Mark Gelineau and Joe King did manage to create the most vivid depiction of the world within the same constraints, so perhaps it could have been done?

I can’t believe how excited I am about this promising new series! I wish this had been a full length novel because I want more! I want to know more about the Razors and how they do their magic, I want to know all about the nobles and how they have become so corrupt, I want to know all about Elinor and her time growing up in amongst those who despised her and I want to know more about the terrifying creatures that live below the ground. The Reaper of Stone was just the smallest glimpse at what’s to come and I’m desperate for another taste!

This series reminds me of some of my favourite fantasy series, Trudi Canavan’s The Black Magician and Frank Herbert’s Dune Chronicles to name but two!

Thank you to Netgalley for this review copy in exchange for an honest review

A Reaper of Stone is a very interesting fantasy novella. It is a part of Echoes of Ascended, a collection of novella’s set in the same world but that follow different characters. That is a set up I always find fascinating because you do need a lot of skills to make that work to get the right balance in such a short space.

This novella is the first I have read in this world. Throughout the novella we get bits and pieces of world building and some of the worlds mythology is wrapped up in the plot. For me there was just enough world building but I would have liked to have seen more. At the start I was slightly confused by some of the terms that were being used. Like what is a reaper? But I can see a lot of potential to this world. We only got to see a very small portion, and there is clearly a lot that can be expanded upon.

As for the plot, that is rather fast paced which of course it has to be in a novella of around 90 pages. There is a nice balance between character interactions and action. The plot itself wasn’t very spectacular but it served its purpose to introduce us to this world and this character.

Elinor, our main character, is a strong female protagonist who has fought through the way nobility treat those that they deem below them. Though she has had to learn the hard way that you can’t change these ways by one fight. She relearns in this novella that it is still certainly worth the effort to fight against them when the cause is worth it. I liked Elinor. As this is a novella there is not enough room to truly deepen her out, but I feel there is enough present that you can form some connection with her.

I would have liked a slightly better connection between the prologue and the rest of the story. Now it feels a bit disjointed for my taste, because I needed a bit more a connection between Con and Elinor. To feel the bond that had formed between them over the years in between the prologue and the rest of the story.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through Net Galley.

We are taken to a world of unexpected things. This author crafts a story that is good for both teens, and adults.

I breezed through this book. It was a very short, and very different book. I would recommend this book to people that are into more historical fantasy. This takes place in a time long ago. Elinor is a reaper, but not a grim reaper. All the same she is important, and a vital piece of this story.

I loved the first part of the story, because it had a creepy creature in it, and brought the story to life. From then the story seemed to skip into the future a bit.

There were some parts of this story that I thought a few things could have used a little more building in the story. I became a little confused at the mention of the academy, because there was not a lot said about it. The charters were well built, although I feel like something was missing, something that might have helped me understand more of what exactly was taking place, and why in the story. For example I would like to know a little more about the main character, and how she got to be where she is now. I liked the main characters attitude, and ambition, therefore I would love to get to know her better, and really know just how she became to be this fantastic character.

If I understood correctly, A Reaper of Stone, is the first novella in An Echo of the Ascended series, a collection of novella's spanning multiple genres. It sounds very interesting and I plan on following the series.

This first novella is an interesting story with the medieval/fantasy feel to it. A House has fallen and now the lands must be reclaimed by the King, a job that befalls the main character, a Reaper.

The story is really short but still a lot happens and you also get quite a view of the world. I would have liked to see the story a bit longer, I think it would have made it even better, but I also believe the authors did a good job making this novella feel like something more than a rushed read in which nothing happens. I'm looking forward to reading the next novellas, although secretly I wouldn't have minded if the next novellas were set in the same world, which seemed really interesting.

Publisher: King

Publishing Date: September 2015

ISBN: 9781944015008

Genre: Fantasy

Rating: 2.5/5

Publishers Description: A Lady is dead. Her noble line ended. And the King’s Reaper has come to reclaim her land and her home. In the marches of Aedaron, only one thing is for certain. All keeps of the old world must fall.

Review: Elinor is an orphan whom went to school with rich kids to become a Reaper in the Kings army. A reaper tears down old castles because bandits and raiders would take up residence but a new Lord claims the land as his own. Really? So after a particular right is performed, the new Lord takes ownership. How does this make sense as a main part of the story line? There are huge “Dune” like worms that I hope will fit into the puzzle with subsequent novellas, but which make no sense at this time.

This was a short novella and as a consequence is hard to rate. Good world building for the limited breadth of the novella coupled with poor character development due to the length.

This was an odd novella. Not bad – not at all; it simply didn't engage me fully. I talk sometimes about writing fighting against me; I've found a shiny new metaphor. Think of it like scuba diving. The kind of writing I treasure, and to which I aspire if I ever get my act together, is transparent, completely clear, allowing the swimmer – the reader – to wander through an alien environment with 360 degree visibility, complete absorption in the environment with no distractions of cloud or turbulence. The water was a little murky in this one. It took a long time for me to click with it, and in a short piece that's a problem.

I don't know. I just don't know. There's a small part of me that wants to follow this series, and find out what else happens… but, honestly, I don't know if it's being voted down. I don't know if I'll actually remember.

The usual disclaimer: I received this book via Netgalley for review.

3+ stars. Super enjoyable but there were definitely a few unrealistic/overly convenient moments in the plot, and it definitely felt a bit incomplete in terms of the world (which is kind of understandable considering it's a novella?) It definitely had good framework and I'll probably read the next book in the series and give some of the other books/novellas in the Echoes of the Ascended universe a try.

Full review can also be found on: Paein and Ms4Tune’s Book Blog

I started to read this around the time Ms4Tune was reading it too - a blogging faux pas! Luckily we realised soon enough and I switched to a different book. But because I'd started, there's not such a big gap between these reviews.

On Netgalley this is called the first of a series. The next book is apparently also the first in a series, yet on goodreads they are all part of An Echo of the Ascended which is all confusing. On closer inspection they also all seem to be the first books in their own series too. Which I'm glad about, because book 2 in An Echo of the Ascended is NOT about Elinor and if that was book 2 I wouldn't be impressed. Besides, book two of her tale is apparently called Broken Banners not Rend The Dark. Did that make sense? Good, you're about where I am with this then.

Elinor is a believer in the old ways, though she is stuck living in the new. Something happens to reform be belief in the old and she throws herself into the defence of it. What happens next is something I'm invested in. The world building is a little vague but strong - a good excerpt designed to keep you interested enough to go forward. I'd love to find out more about Elinor's world. It will be interesting to see if her world is the same as the next protagonist. Yes, I know that they're set in the same world but time lines and class and background and even locations and how the characters perceive everything can make the same world seem so vastly different.

I look forward to finding out how Con and Elinor's friendship works, it seems a little odd - they had an interesting meeting! I also look forward to learning more of Elinor herself, what drives her and where she's going. And I have to say, the horrors below the grass remind me of Tremours - a favourite series of films. The promise of a country of corrupt nobles also puts me in mind of a recent favourite series of mine by Sabastien De Castell. If this series becomes half as epic as those, it will be epic indeed.

"A Lady is dead. Her noble line ended. And the King’s Reaper has come to reclaim her land and her home. In the marches of Aedaron, only one thing is for certain. All keeps of the old world must fall."

4.2 Stars

ARC was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for another great one, NetGalley!

This was actually the perfect length for a Novella! I loved it!
I don't really know what to say about it other than the fact that it was so fast-paced! It was fast-paced but it didn't skirt across details, it provided just the right amount. It could have done with a little more dialogue, but that's really all there is I could possibly complain about.
Like I said, it was the perfect length for a novella! In this little story, there was sword-fighting, action, adventure, world-building, character development.
All the components that make a to-die-for book was packed into a novella and it was...I seriously can't put it into words!

"There is a difference between being a great man and playing at one,"

This story follows Elinor as she plays the role of the King's Reaper.
The story begins as we meet Elinor as she fights mythical creatures, meeting her friend Conbert in the process. Then we fast-forward a couple years into the future and now both of them stand in prestigious standing with the King. Elinor as the King's Reaper and Conbert as the King's Engineer.
They have come to a small town to completely dismantle and wipe it off the map, but not before they learn the truth.
The question becomes whether Elinor can stand in ignorance of it, or whether she'll fight for the people who can't fight for themselves.

"I name you murderers. I name you oathbreakers.

To put it bluntly, this Novella was way more than what I had expected upon applying for the ARC copy of it. It had everything I listed above and now that I have access to the others that follow, I'll start them, too!
They're good to read while I should be paying attention in class...
Can't wait to see what else this world has in store for us, readers!

I won this book via Goodreads' giveaway. Thank you for the authors whom sent me this novela.

"A Reaper of Stone" follows the story of Elinor, a girl who dreamed of glory and the way of hero as the old days tale told. A turn of fate made Elinor a Reaper, someone whose duty is to destroy the old reign for the new one to advance.

I like the fact that this is a novela, a short read. It's not so heavy on the world building, but it was still enough to give us a glimpse of the world that Elinor lives in.

I also like how action-packed this book is, but it still has enough moments to show that our heroine is not all muscle and brawl, but someone with brain and heart as well.

The downside of this book is in its length as well. I know it sounds contradictory, but the fact that the story is only around 64-pages long means that it jumped right on the action and didn't have enough time for back story. At some points, I even thought that maybe there was another prequel book for this, but apparently not.

Another downside was a scene where Elinor stitched her own cuts. I was like... you didn't even clean the wound first? It was a questionable scene for me.

Overall, "A Reaper of Stone" was a light and fun read. It seems that the authors are enlarging their stories and world via novelas like this and even planned to release one novela per month.

Btw, you can see the unboxing of this book here.

"A Reaper of Stone" is the first novella in the An Echo Of The Ascended series by Mark Gelineau and Joe King, which will see the publication of a new title each month, featuring different protagonists, worlds and genres.

This first instalment, despite its conciseness, has the feel of a true epic fantasy. Set in the realm of Aedaron, the third person narrative follows Elinor, the King's Reaper, and her latest assignment. The tight yet evocative and very effective writing immediately transports us into her world, filled with terrifying ancient monsters, traditions, honour, treachery and magic.

Excellent delivery, great plot filled with action, strong emotions, realistic characters and a kick-ass heroine made this a very quick read that leaves you wanting more - much more.

A Reaper of Stone is the first glimpse at Aedaron and Elinor, therefore do not expect to find all of the answers in this first tale. The fact that this book is referred to as "Elinor 1" promises us that we will encounter her again, hopefully in the not so distant future when we will no doubt learn more about her and her companions. I for one cannot wait.

Elinor grew up hoping to live the tales of old, but the reality of serving the king is far different from what she expected. The nobles are corrupt and willing to kill anyone who gets in their way.

As a King’s Reaper, Elinor--and the engineers with her--pull down the unneeded stone keeps in the Marches. An old noble line has died, so Elinor will also perform a ceremony to transfer her current assignment to a new noble. Only, the old line might not be gone...

"A Reaper of Stone" is a heroic fantasy novella. It reminded me of the wonderful heroic fantasy I read as a kid, not the dark, depressing stuff that is so common these days.

The characters were interesting, heroic, and played well off each other. The fantasy world was developed nicely for the length of the story and gave an idea of the depth there is to this world. I could always follow what was going on, but the world-building didn't slow down the action. I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading future stories by these authors.

There was a fair amount of bad language (cursing words). There was no sex. Overall, I'd recommend this fun, quick read to fans of heroic fantasy.

I received a copy of this book in response for an honest review.

The more books I read by Mark Gelineau and Joe King, the more I'm disappointed. Not because they are bad writers, or the books are bad but because of the missed opportunity. By writing these stories as novella they are missing out on developing the story to its full potential and the characters are not able to demonstrate their growth over the course of the books.

So far all the novellas I've read from these two have been great. But they really suffer from the lack of depth that comes from writing a novella. Novellas are either are densely packed mini novels that contain all the life and vibrancy of a full novel or they are a ghost of a book, only hinting at the books possible potential. Sadly, the more I read from these authors, the more I realise that these books are the second type of novel - giving just enough detail to make it interesting but lacking in depth to really draw you in.

I received an ARC copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you NetGalley!

This was a fun, short read. The story was original and innovative. I was pleasantly surprised at how the authors managed ti create such a complex and intricate world in so little words; politics, old mythology, societal structure and so on. Although the book, more so a short story, was short, it was complete.

The only down side, is that the reader is bombarded with information in the first fifth of the story. I had to reread passages to make sure I know which character was who and doing what. As the story goes on, however, it all makes more sense, because the reader understands the characters and their roles.

I would have liked to see a little more of Colin in the story too. He is in the prologue, and I would have thought him of more importance in the plot, but I assume he will be more present in the second instalment.

Gelineau and King have created an effective page-turner that espouses modern fantasy values reminiscent of a Anthony Ryan or Joe Abercrombie, but with a refreshing lack of cynicism rooted in the richness of beliefs and values. Their approach to storytelling is concise, stripped of superfluous meanderings of traditional fantasy and shines in its rhythmic pacing, particularly in crisp action sequences. They embrace tropes of fantasy fiction, while offering their perspective through well-chosen twists.

The novella format offers a quick read that suits the on-the-go consumption of mobile media. It is a bite of the world of Aederon that, at times, left me wanting more in deeper motivations and relationships amongst the characters. With a number of stories already on the horizon, I look forward to seeing how the tale of Elinor and Con develops.

I feel weird about short stories because for me it's very hard to rate them.
I really had I fun time reading this book. The way that the characters interact to which other, it's really good.
Conbert Eylnen,
“he was just Con, apprentice engineer and architect, student of the academy, and anxious to get the hell out of there.”
I was just disappointed that he doesn't apear that much, though is very funny and knows how to make people laugh.
And then we have Elinor, she is just wow, I love specially the way that she takes control of the situation.

The world-building is just the way I like it, the kingdoms, the creepy forests... It's beautiful.

The ebook is available on Kobo (February 29, 2016).

Good lord, did I love this story!! Is it a short story, is it a novella, I'm not quite sure, it is rather small and reads so well and fast I devoured it in one afternoon. But boy, does it deliver! Despite being so short, the world building is pristine. You're thrown smack into the middle of it, with no preparation whatsoever, but the authors blend in the lore and legends of this world with the current events in a way that makes it so natural and organic I couldn't fail to feel like I was part of it. Part of that world. The MC, Elinor, must be one of the best female leads I've encountered so far, and I was left hungered for more on her, I want to follow along on her journeys and adventures. Will certainly be keeping my eye out for other books by this duo, they're that good!!

"A Reaper of Stone" by Mark Gelineau and Joe King, is a creative spin that is parts "Tremors" the movie and part Nights of the Round table. I love that the book focused on the heroine Elinor and not the stereotypical hero role of this time period. The book was fast paced and interesting throughout. Elinor was one tough chic, who fills such a unique role for a female. The book did leave me with a lot of questions, which was not necessarily a bad thing because it makes me look forward to possible follow-up stories. I rate this book 5 fangs and hope there's more to come.
