Gary Sundell | 21 comments Hamilton also wrote a number of World's Finest issues. Not only did Otto Binder do comic works but over at DC you can find entries for Eando (E and O) Binder. Mickey Spillane also did work in the comics industry. I'd forgotten that Bester created Solomon Grundy.

How cool is that Steranko cover on Return to the Stars? Covers were so much better then.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I just finished my Kindle Unlimited selection.

The Second Golden Age of Science Fiction Megapack #2 -- Mark Clifton by Mark Clifton The Second Golden Age of Science Fiction Megapack #2 -- Mark Clifton

I really enjoyed this. The stories range from light and funny (heavy on the irony) to larger narratives about the future of Man.

Heather (bruyere) I am reading Shades of Grey. So far, some funny bits. Basically it's about a society where different people can see only certain colors and your status is based on this.

Alan (alanb24) | 34 comments Currently reading Joel Shepherd's Killswitch before moving onto a group read (if my library has a copy) and then a bit of a dare read from my partner.

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 41 comments Just finished An Ancient Peace (Peacekeeper, #1; Confederation, #6) by Tanya Huff by Tanya Huff and loved it.

The Confederate novels are pretty much pure space opera, I felt that Huff went a bit off track with the last one. Having Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr leave the Marines meant it was off track and aimless. Was that intentional? Personally I doubt it, I think Huff had a book plot that did not work. With this one though I think she is very much back on track and I am looking forward to reading more as she writes them.

message 114: by Candy (new)

Candy I just joined this group so hello!

Right now, I'm trying to make my way through Authority–the second book in The Southern Reach Trilogy. It's not keeping my attention like the first book however. Anyone else read it? How did you feel?

message 115: by Heather (new)

Heather (bruyere) Welcome Candy! I haven't heard of that book. Can you link it?

Annihilation, Authority by Jeff Vandermeer.

I didn't care for the second book. Thought it was a bit of a slog. Listened to the audio book and thought the narrator was good though. Still haven't attempted the last book.

message 117: by Heather (new)

Heather (bruyere) Thanks, Joel. Sounds fairly interesting.

Yeah, that's how I'm feeling right now. It's not really going anywhere and I feel all the momentum the first book built up has dissipated. I'm willing to give the last book a try still but after reading other books first. I went from Annihilation straight into Authority; I need a break lol.

message 120: by Candy (new)

Thanks Heather! I saw Joel already linked you to the books but I wanted to return the greeting. :)

Joel I have heard that the third book returns to the goodness of the first. I'm excited to see what they do with the movie though.

message 122: by Candy (new)

Candy That's good to hear, Joel. I'm looking forward to it. Also looking forward to the movie. I can't imagine how they'll make everything look and wonder if they'll bring in other events/characters from the other books.

Lizzie | 303 comments Last week I finished Sara Hoyt's DarkShip Thieves Dark Ship series. I really liked it.

My free kindle read I went back to Nathan Lowell's series.Full Share I really liked the first one, the 2nd one made me feel like I was reading a teenager's porn fantasy, the 3rd book redeemed that partially.

Now I am finishing a Star Trek Enterprise Rise of the Foundation Live by the Code.

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 41 comments Here is my review for the Tanya Huff, if anyone wants to read it.... https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I also want to indulge in a small rave about covers; In the early Confederation series, Huff had a brilliant artist who managed to mare Sergeant Torin Kerr attractive, bad ass and convincing.
examples Valor's Choice (Confederation #1) by Tanya Huff , The Better Part of Valor (Confederation #2) by Tanya Huff

In this more recent edition's cover however she is portrayed as a super skinny, catwalk model with insect thin arms, flawless skin and hips that have apparently had the bones surgically removed to make them slimmer. An Ancient Peace (Peacekeeper, #1; Confederation, #6) by Tanya Huff

Bitterly disappointed as she looks like she would snap in two if she tried to so much as lift a rifle.

I reckon she looks a bit skinnier in Better Part of Valor, she's just wearing a bulky space suit. I do agree with what you say though, the shift, I believe is aimed at appealing to a certain kind of reader. In other words, male.

message 126: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 41 comments Ah, true about Better Part of Valor Jim. I think the skinny is thought to be generally appealing though, so I don't think it is wholly aimed at males... Anycase I reserve the right to grumble about it :)

message 137: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie | 303 comments I did finished Your Truth is Out There and I recommend it, especially now as it is available through the R2R program.

I then read Double Share.

I am halfway through Constitution but it isn't grabbing me enough to want to read the rest of the series.

Thanks to Amazon and my kindle paperwhite, I have more unread books than I have ever had in my life. I don't know what I want to read next.

Hi Emily .... your Borg Queen here ... we have Young Adult and Middle Grade Listopias. Any selections you care to add or recommend to improve that list and make it more useful for people like you would be greatly appreciated. As a mom-of-teenagers and a middle-grader, I know how hard it is to get kids to read sci-fi.

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 41 comments Just finished The Last Continent by Edmund Cooper byEdmund Cooper . It was a new/old acquisition from the weekend book fair and I am re-discovering how brilliant some of the old sci-fi could be, and while in it's day it was definable as sci-fi, at a re-read it kind of qualifies as space opera, because the early writers were often more interested in concepts than in the mechanics of a space drive... interesting evolution of book classifications isn't it?

Kirsten (kmcripn) I finished reading This Alien Shore by C.S. Friedman This Alien Shore by C.S. Friedman last night.

This is an incredible science fiction epic (500+ pages) written in 1998 that read incredibly fast -- like a thriller, in fact. I only started reading this last Wednesday and finished it last night!

Lizzie | 303 comments I am halfway through Lois McMaster Bujold's Sharing Knife series. I had picked up the first two books Beguilement (The Sharing Knife, #1) by Lois McMaster Bujold and Legacy (The Sharing Knife, #2) by Lois McMaster Bujold at a used book store. I ordered the next two from used book stores on Amazon.

While waiting I read Petra, who has an R2R offer, but I had bought it at a 99 cent sale. I thought it was pretty good. Petra (The Prison World Revolt Book 1) by Matthew S. Rotundo .

I'm reading Alliance of Equals by Sharon Lee which was just released yesterday. I had read the eARC when that was first available so this might be considered a reread. It's the latest in the Liaden Universe. FYI Goodreads has a giveaway for copies of the book here https://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/sh...

Just finished reading a new book from Dan Wells, the author of the John Cleaver series, called Bluescreen. It's YA cyberpunk, and I thought it was a lot of fun and interesting. The sequel comes out in February. Check it out if you get the chance. It's not space opera, but it had great characters and cool ideas about where our technology in regards to cell phones, computers, and the internet may go in the near/distant future.
