It's an 80's novel for grammar school kids. I can't remember the name, title, or even what the cover looked like. It's about a girl (I can't remember her name) whose friend is keeping a devastating secret. She finally discovers the friend was molested. All I remember is the friend's name was Patricia. After discovering the secret, she's observing her friend (I don't remember if Patricia knew her friend knows about the molestation) Patricia is wearing a necklace that spell out her initials, & the friend is wondering how that could happen to someone so nice; whose initials even show how nice she is: P.A.L. -a girl who's everybody's pal.

Update - Now I'm thinking this was just one event in the book, not the central plot, which is maybe why I'm having so much trouble finding it. I think it may have been just one of several things the lead character was struggling with and/or discovering. :(
The book I'm looking for sounds similar to Night Riding, except that the book I read was set in the time it was written, which was in the 1980s.
Thanks, Holly, but it wasn't on the list. It was a fictional story, & I don't think the main plot was discovering her friend's molestation...I think it was more about discovering that bad things happen to good people & figuring out how to be supportive. It was really just a creative story, & not really meant to be educational, although kids would learn from it.
Was it illustrated? Was this a book you read for school, as an assignment? If yes, was it a Catholic grammar school? Or did you read it for fun?
Was it aimed at middle grade readers (8 to 12 yrs old) or slightly older, maybe 12-14?

It was a children's novel for elementary school kids, so it wasn't illustrated. I read it for fun. It's the same reading level as the Ramona Quimby books. I don't remember it being an intense or disturbing book. I think that the friend, Patricia, simply tells the lead character that she has a secret to tell her, & the lead is supposed to keep that secret, but that it's only that one moment in the book. It's not the whole plot, I don't think.
