The Witchlands series by Susan Dennard - Reading from 'Windwitch (The Witchlands #2)' from March 7th 2019

I am late to the game, but once I started this book I couldn't put it down! By the time I reached the end of the book I was grabbing my computer to check and see if my library had the sequel :).

There were a few things that did bother me a bit. I usually like to be thrown right into a story and a world, but in this instance I felt like there was too much being thrown at the readers without enough explanation or world building around it in the beginning. It took me probably 30 pages at least to push past that point and then I really got into it.
(view spoiler)[ The other thing that bothered me was how antagonistic and confrontational Safi was particularly with Merik (cliched I hate you but we all know that I will end up loving you scenario), however I liked that she developed and changed throughout the book. She became more introspective and empathetic as her eyes were opened to the world.

I did end up really enjoying the world that Dennen built, the different witch powers, countries and beliefs. The action in the book was wonderful and I absolutely loved the friendship and bond between Safi and Iseult. I'm looking forward to seeing how they find their way back to each other and what Safi's life with the Marstok will be like. <.spoiler> (hide spoiler)]

Waiting for Windwitch to come in at the library, but I am excited to start it. It should be in by November 1st, which would be good timing if anyone else is doing the Nov/Dec Tug of War Challenge. Is anyone else reading the series right now?

(view spoiler)[ I have been thinking about Safi and her agreement with the Marstoks. It will be interesting to see how they use her and what her life will be like there. I'm assuming she will be treated as nobility but used often for her magic. I want to see how she will be so valuable to them that they would start a war over acquiring her services. And since Safi agreed to go with them, how will she be able to leave in the future when her friends come for her?

Also worried about Iseult being on her own. So many seemed prejudiced against the Matsi (:() so it seems very dangerous for her to be on her own. Obviously she is a strong fighter and knows to be careful, but she has no one to watch her back and help her if she is ganged up on. (hide spoiler)]

Sorry for just updating now! So far I think this fits my taste perfectly :D

(view spoiler)[ I love Isoult and Safi's characterization and their sister dynamics! I'm really excited to see them grow more in the series and I lowkey want to see a conflict between them ahahhahaha although I really hope that it's not a love triangle. To me, it feels like the Bloodwitch and Isoult will have a thing going on by the end? And of course the passive aggressive Merik will surely fall for Safi. XD Quite typical that the love interests are already there, but maybe I'm wrong with that! Anyways, I think this one is more bent on developing the sisterhood between the two girls.


I'm really intrigued with the grand scheme Eron is playing, it's thrilling that the turmoil happening in the political backdrop is still shaded so much. Initially, I don't feel the urgency why the girls needs to run like hell bcos of a Bloodwitch. I mean it's acceptable AHHAHHA but like, it was quite the first push in the plot and I find it so unconvincing. However, it wasn't just about that! I enjoy how fast paced this suddenly is from Chaoter 7 onwards.

I really like the magic system here so far! I feel inclined to know more about Isoult's heritage more though :) What do you think?

The details of their magical abilities are also super intriguing. I hope these continue to play a large part of the focus, throughout the novel. I#m 20% in and am really struggling to get into this. It's not bad just overwhelming me and I can't seem to get the gist of the story, for some reason. I think I'll put it down and pick it back up some other time. Sorry for not finishing reading it with you!
