Team Have Book, Will Travel
Sorry, missed Sarah's post before mine. I'm working on what detours and locations are on my TBR. I will let you all know if there is something that can't be found or something that I don't plan on reading unless we are specifically doing that detour/location instead of the spell-out :)
I was wondering how the detour works. Do we pick one to all read or do we each pick from the detour and work on the one we picked?
Each detour is for a specific location on our trip. Here's the list:
Brazil - Read a book with a country scene on the cover
Turkey - Read a book whose author died 5+ years ago
Russia - Read a book with the name of the tarot card "The Star" in the text or title
Indonesia - Read a book where the first word of the title is The
Australia - Read a book where the title starts with the letter O
New Caledonia - Read a book where a character is a cowboy/cowgirl
United States - Read a book with an alternate history
Costa Rica - Read a book where a girl dresses up as a boy
The locations are a bit tricky for me. Of course, I'm more than happy just to read any book for that week if you all have it covered :)

Oh ok. So the next one we can either do the spell-it or the detour which is an author that died 5+ yrs
Yep, or we could read a book set in Turkey.
Author who died over five years ago, any ideas???And I would personally rather do United States then alternate history, I'm guessing most of us have books set in the United States???
Also, I am totally fine with waiting for everybody to finish :-)
Off the top of my head a few authors that come to mind are John Steinbeck
Robert B Parker
John Updike
Michael Crichton
Tony Hillerman
I just started the audiobook of
by Douglas Adams, who died in 2001. I should be done in a couple of hours.
Sorry it's taking me so long to finish my book (especially since it's pretty short). I have about 50 pages left and should, key word should finish it tomorrow. I'm helping my mom move so I may have to hide behind a few boxes to get some reading in.
Finished: 2/5/16
Rating: 4 stars
Uses: will work for author died 5+ years ago; Douglas Adams died in 2001, it will also work for an L with the title, or a D or A for the author
I finished my book, so we should be completely done with Brazil! Hopefully my reading will get back up to speed next week, but I will probably be reading some shorter books this month. Looking at the previous posts I'm not sure if we officially decided on a challenge, but the the detour seems like a pretty easy one and Holli has already managed to read a book that fits it. I'm also pretty sure I own a lot of books that fit the detour, but just realized they are all packed in boxes :( I guess it will help motivate me to unpack.
Holli wrote: "I just started the audiobook of

The Hitchhiker's audios done by Martin Freeman are quite good. I thought he did a great job. I was leery about them too when I saw the narrator change, but he does well in reading and portraying the characters.
I'm going to start The Great Gatsby which I've been meaning to reread for ages - I can barely remember it. It'll work for the detour, or the letters T (title) B or N (characters) - depending on which we choose.
I went through all my read books and found something for 5 out of the 7 remaining detours. Luckily my browser is playing nice with the spreadsheet so I got them put under Luggage. I still need to search these books & future reads for "The Star" and find a cowboy/cowgirl that I might want to read. Any suggestions on that latter one?
I tried searching the Goal FAQs because I started questioning if the girl dressing up as a boy is referring to children, not adults. I can't find it on the goal list, I'm having some technical difficulty ;) What do you all think?
I think either would be fine, but I'm definitely not in charge, I don't have a book for that, I don't believe.
No worries, I wasn't asking for anybody in charge to give an answer. Per my understanding of the rules, we are to ask questions to teammates & then challenge peers before going to the Travel Agent. So I'm just trying to get a consensus :)

I have a book lined up for author died 5+ years ago but need to finish my current read first, which may take the better part of this week.

It's on the spreadsheet but I wasn't sure if it worked or not. In Changeless, Madame Lefoux dresses as a man.
ETA - I should clarify, Lefoux is a woman & acts like a woman but prefers to dress as the opposite sex throughout the book.

Holli inspired me to listen to The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams, which works for the detour. Also, I added it to the Luggage tab. I'm also dreadful when it comes to spreadsheets so let me know if I ever screw it up.

I interpreted the goal more along the lines of a girl disguising herself as a boy versus merely dressing in boys clothing. To me other characters should confuse her as a boy. But, the goal does only say "dresses" as a boy so I guess it still fits. I'll leave it to the others to decide :)

Glad to hear it was good. Now I can't wait to get to it :)
I think actually that the Douglas Adams books might work better as audio - I liked the ideas in them more than the actual experience of reading them. And either of those narrators would be good.Since it looks like no-one has said they can't do it, I've set up the spreadsheet for a detour in Turkey. :) Please shout if you want to change back to a spell-it-out.

It's a bit tricky on this one so I'd prefer to have something less questionable. There is a book that will work perfectly but I think this task is one I might possibly come across in my planned reads so I will wait & see. Thanks for your input!

To be completely honest, I'm having a little trouble with the dead author goal, but I will get to it ASAP :-)
I'm reading a book that the author died Jan 2010. I'm hoping to be finished with it tonight or tomorrow.
Spreadsheet updated. I finished The Great Gatsby, and it so happened that the audio I finished a few days ago had "the star" in it. I didn't even go looking for it, so it was a nice surprise when it turned up. :) Berit, don't worry, take your time. It's nice in Istanbul! :)
Sarah that's a nice picture :) Glad you accidentally found star but I couldn't read The Great Gatsby again. I've read that book too many times for college and I just can't stand it anymore. LOL
For a short book it took me several days to get through! I didn't have to read it for school, I just thought I would refresh my memory as I read it so long ago - in case I ever watch the film. ;)I can't say it appealed terribly - some of the writing was gorgeous but the characters were so unpleasant. Glad I never took English Lit as I can't analyse books for toffee.
Hahahaha yeah it wasn't fun. That's like the current book Pocho which I'm going to use for dead author, it's for a Modern Lit class but I have to say it's not a bad read and it's a fresh book instead of a repeat.
Forgot a book:
Finished: 2/10/16
Rating: 2 stars
Uses: author died 5+ years ago, D or A for author; S for title
The book i'm listening to right now, Locke & Key, mentions characters watching the stars, which I guess works for the next detour. I also came across it accidentally and since it's on audiobook I can't easily backtrack to double check the text.
Victoria wrote: "The book i'm listening to right now, Locke & Key, mentions characters watching the stars, which I guess works for the next detour. I also came across it accidentally and since it's ..."You can look it up through Amazon. It'll give you the sentence and the page.
I tried searching the book on Amazon, but since it's based on a graphic novel instead of a book I couldn't do it. And I don't know how much of the text was changed when making it an audiobook. I'll just have to keep listening and hope the mention something about stars again. Then again, we may not end up choosing the detour....
Anyway, I feel like everyones been really quiet so I thought I would prompt a question in the spirit of our Around the World theme:Has anyone been to any of the countries on our itinerary or have a country they are longing to visit?
I love to travel and have been to several countries, but sadly I have not been to any of these (other than the US but that hardly counts). And I would love to visit our current location, Turkey.
I haven't traveled much other then throughout the United States, other than that I'm only been to Mexico, Canada, the Bahamas, and Jamaica.I'm so sorry if I'm a hold up on the stop, I really need to find a book, how many people have done the Detour already???
I've been to a few different countries but never left Europe. I have been to Turkey though! We were only there for a day but visited Ephesus which was just stunning.
You're not holding us up Berit, I've not started my dead author book yet as I had a crazy busy week but I've now got a week off so I'm going to get as many books banked as possible!
Zee wrote: "I've been to a few different countries but never left Europe. I have been to Turkey though! We were only there for a day but visited Ephesus which was just stunning."I'm so jealous. Turkey is pretty high on my 'places I want to visit' list.
I also really like how we can set our own pace with this challenge so don't worry about rushing to finish a book. I managed to finish the book for this stop really quickly, but depending on my inconsistent schedule I might be behind on some of the others.

We can always start reading for the next stop - do we want to do the detour? Authors who have been dead for 5+ years is a really easy one for me, but we all read differently. I'm up for hunting out a book set in Turkey, but I think it could be difficult. Or we can spell Istanbul (8 letters so we all get one) or Turkey.
