I don't generally read the classics, but Barnaby Rudge looks like it may be interesting. After you read it, please leave a review of your thoughts about it.

For some reason I find carriages more interesting than cars. I would love to review the book once I have finished with it. What do you prefer reading?

Jan | 241 comments I really like your "retort". Cleverness, to me, ranks above all. As for my preferences, I am quite eclectic. My favorite author is Stephen King, not so much for the genre he represents, but more for his writing style. His words and phrases intrigue me. However, I also enjoy bestsellers; Connelly, LeHane, Hosseini, Binchy, Baldacci, etc. I do have a favorite classic - Pride and Prejudice by of course, Jane Austen. And someday I hope to finish Wilkie Collins' The Moonstone.

Jan, try The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. A fun book, full of gothic mystery and intrigue, twists and turns.

Every day since last Tuesday, my landline and broadband internet have shut off at 8 p.m. and come back on around 7 a.m. I've spent an hour on the phone with the phone company, already had one tech come out (he said everything checked out fine), another tech coming out tomorrow. When I call when the service is down they say, "Oh yes, I can see there's a network outage in your area." But by the time the tech arrives in the morning, the outage is apparently not showing up so there's apparently nothing to fix??

This is getting really old. These motherfuckers need to fix this.

Thank you for your recommendation. I just ordered it for my Kindle.

I felt 'The Kite Runner' to be somewhat less convincing but 'Nights of Stars and Rain' was a nice read and I loved Binchy's portrayal of human emotions, as well as her depiction of Greece.

I recently bought a new router, which the cable company sent to me. I asked my son-in-law if he would hook it up for me, he couldn't figure it out, and the grief I went through to get connected was ridiculous. I spent many hours with two separate techs to talk me through it and I got the wi-fi connected but not to the wireless appliances I had. And I was told that the techs that go to houses "don't do wireless". I was completely frustrated, but then my grandson stopped by. The first time he couldn't get it going, but on the second try was finally successful. Why do they make things so difficult?

message 614: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

When I had my wireless system set up it took forever. The tech was in my house for what had to be 3 hours, for the simplest possible setup. I thought advances in technology were supposed to make things easier, not harder.

Part of it was my laptop, because the icon for the wireless had disappeared somehow (I noticed it vanish several years ago), and the tech couldn't find the wireless software on the hard drive. So he had to go out to his truck and bring in some software which he uploaded to my hard drive, and left me with a thumb drive that allows me to go wireless. Otherwise I guess I couldn't go wireless, wtf.

And then several months later I discovered they had given me a faulty modem - if the broadband goes out for a few seconds or a few minutes, and you happen to be clicking on new links during that time, it takes you to the URL you were going to, but it adds on a suffix so that the next time you try to go to that site, the page that comes up is actually in error. Then you have to erase your recent browsing history so it goes to an older page of the correct URL, rather than the URL with the suffix added. After this had happened to me about 5 times I googled it and found out that it was a fault in the modem, that the company knew about it, and were still giving out the faulty modems anyway.

Oh, and the low introductory rate they gave me for 12 months ended and now all my bills are twice what they used to be, for service that goes out all the time.

I don't know if I can tackle a LONG book right now. I have a TBR list so long it would take forever to read them all, plus I keep adding to it. The most depressing book I ever read was The Dollmaker by Harriet Arnow. It was also one of the best books I ever read.

Azhar Suharwardi | 10 comments Lobstergirl wrote: "Have you read A Fine Balance? A very moving book about life in India, but one of the most depressing books I've ever read."

Any book about life in India would have to be depressing and if that is not the case, then it has failed to present a true picture of the country. We have been seeking independence from Indian rule for the past 60 years, probably for the same reason.

Azhar Suharwardi | 10 comments Jan wrote: "Why do they make things so difficult?"

I find WiFi technology to be awful. It is easier to run to a store three miles away and get a LAN cable to connect ten different devices than to connect two WiFi devices sitting next to each other. WiFi is not technology, it is torture.

I think you have to place your finger somewhere at the bottom left and slide it to the right.

I can't seem to make that work.

Just checked on my kindle, I think they made a slight change to the scroll function in their latest update. Place your finger at the bottom left and slide it upwards to make the scroll bar appear.

Hope this helps :-)

Carol | 1678 comments My last day off since Dec 24. Next year will be easier with an extra day before Christmas.

Also, I won't be taking classes that end on Dec 23!! What was I thinking? I just earned my bachelor's if the one professor gets off her ass and finishes grading. One or two at a time over 20 years, whew. Talk me out of taking any more classes for fun.

I'm glad this year is over. I lost my sister and I want to be done having firsts without her.

I don't make resolutions but I sincerely hope everyone gets what they need out of 2017.
