Hi everybody! So, today I'm going to throw in a little suggestion that I am sure many of you will really welcome. In fact, I have seen board members already talking about this. However, maybe this thread would come in handy to share all of our experiences pertaining to this idea.
After reading January's book, many of us have been left with a distinct feeling that we, too, should be 'doing something about it'. However, because of many reasons, becoming a full-time, full-fledged activist might not be an option for many.
However, there's something we can all do - small, local action. So...what about you try and take Our Shared Shelf to your local / nearest library? :)
You can try and talk to a librarian there. Tell them about this initiative that many people do not know about but might be interested if they did. Tell them why do you think it is important to spread it. See what happens! Some libraries might only agree to let you put a sign and/or reading list at their billboard, with a little explanatory note. Some of them might actually be so interested that they may make an effort to get the books. Some might be fully on board and organise talkings and / or any other kind of exciting events. More people will read these books and hopefully join us here...and maybe, just maybe, you will help some people to change their mind regarding feminism, or inspire somebody to contribute to the cause.
I know I'm gonna try. Yesterday, in fact, I had this crazy idea of randomly bringing OSS into the conversation with an acquaintance of mine. Turned out, I was talking to the head of the local government's gender equality department! What are the odds? But now he knows about OSS, and maybe something cool will start from this sudden connection.
What do you think about it? :D

MeerderWörter | 2388 comments My local library is REALLY small, but I think we should act like a Gryffindor on this and try our very best.

I'll visit in the next weeks and I'll write when I did.

You never know until you try, right? Please keep us informed! :)

Yay, more people! Well, a university library might actually be even more interested in such an initiative, I'd think? :D

Camille | 42 comments Yes but if books are not yet translate (like My life on the road) it would be complicated I think.

February will solve the problem, at least for some languages I'd say, and we're hoping next months will also have translations readily available. :)

The Librarian OT (thelibrarianot) | 35 comments This makes me happy seeing so many people in this book club taking initiative and getting people together. You guys are awesome. I haven't started one at my local library yet. However, I have just contacted our local Reclaim the Night group (a group that supports ending violence against women and advocates for gender equality). I'm hoping that I can recruit some more book club peeps and start a group which we can meet at our library or cafe. I've never run a book club before but I'm excited about the possibility. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Peace, Tara

Camille | 42 comments Cross my fingers! Otherwise we'll have to read them in english. I suppose there is a beginning to everything! Haha ;)

Great idea! And perhaps if the libraries are hooked in, they may acquire those books in advance.

Camille | 42 comments Some news for you!
Unfortunatly in my university library they disagree with our proposition... but in the little library of my little town they want to talk about OSS to other readers. They don't have enough money to buy all the books but they think that maybe people will try to buy them themselves. It's quite ironic but cool I think. And... I have my copy!! :D
What about you all ? :)

Camille | 42 comments Yes definitely! ^^

message 14: by Tim (new)

Tim I'll give it a try, though I live in a very small town in Belgium (where activism seems to ring alien for whatever reason) so the library (which I don't think a lot of people go to per day, let alone people willing or able to participate in feminism) is very small as well. I just hope the librarians will appreciate me trying to combine reading with social activism enough to help.

message 15: by Tim (new)

Tim Thanks K, it'll be open from 9 till noon tomorrow. I hope I don't oversleep or choke on my words or something (I'm not a great speaker when I actually need to be, as it turns out). I'll keep the thread up to date.

message 16: by Tim (new)

Tim Hadn't thought of that. I'm not much good with Word and currently out of paper to print with though. If, however, the librarians should give me permission, I could definitely do that. Maybe it'll be a good idea to start asking school- or classmates to join as well. There are several key places for flyer spots in my town, so that might help as well (although it's been raining like hell lately and printing paper is not suited for rain).

message 17: by Tim (new)

Tim Hi again. I went to my library today and the good news is I didn't choke. The bad news is that the conversation was really short, as one of the employees told me to bring such suggestions via e-mail to the librarian, so really I haven't really achieved anything today. On the plus side, I now no longer need to worry about being a bad speaker, as my request to bring some of Our Shared Shelf to the library will now have to be written. I did ask if it was alright to bring leaflets and I was told that I need only to bring them to the employees for a check in content and after that I'm free to place them on the rack at the entrance of the library where all other leaflets are displayed. I'll definitely have a lot of work to do, so I'm hoping to first get some help from other people by spreading awareness of Our Shared Shelf (best place would probably be my school), so maybe this will pay off after all, but for now, I'll need some time to draft the e-mail and after that, this project of mine will be at a temporary standstill.

Woo-hoo, Tim! Hey, I don't really care if you are a bad speaker, you are still pretty awesome! Keep us informed and/or ask for suggestions, will you? :) Eek, I'm excited.

message 19: by Tim (new)

Tim Thanks for your understanding, but being a bad (or nervous) speaker can definitely vex you when you're trying to convince people :/ Here's hoping I can get actually stick to this project (I'm already lazy with school work as it is).

Simone | 85 comments That's a really brilliant idea!!! But in my hometown, there's no library (that's a very sad story...)Even so, I will try and see what i can do in my college!!

message 21: by Ashwin (new)

Ashwin (ashiot) | 215 comments There is a British Council Library in my city and even they don't have the books discussed here.

If some one suggests Emma (Or one of the mods who are in the UK) to get in touch with the British Council (they have presence in a large no. of countries) to get on board, more people will have access to the books.

For those who are not familiar with British Council Libraries, it is: "The United Kingdom's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities.
A registered charity: 209131 (England and Wales) SC037733 (Scotland)." (As mentioned on the website)

Here is the link: https://www.britishcouncil.org/

message 22: by MeerderWörter (new)

MeerderWörter | 2388 comments Imagine Emma descending to the British Council Library and telling them to fix this little problem. Like an angry teacher who storms into a library to tell the librarian to finally order the books.

I mean, we could easily start a shitstorm if they declined.

Only if you all descend on them in arrowhead formation ;D"

Yes, and not just the British Council, but also other libraries that have a global presence.

If some people descend on them, I'll claim I did not plant the idea of bringing them on board, and that my account was hacked!

message 24: by MeerderWörter (new)

MeerderWörter | 2388 comments You shouldn't have written that right now, Ashwin.

@Kodak: I'm on board, when shall we start?

Catching up with this thread! Tim, have you got any news? :)

I met a few interesting people in the last days and will probably try to do something here in Granada as well...with their support, it's more likely that I get to do something cool.

I was also thinking about secondary schools and high-schools. Perhaps some of you stay in touch with yours / are actually still in such a stage and this would also be an alternative way of bringing feminism to the young people. :)

message 26: by MeerderWörter (new)

MeerderWörter | 2388 comments Ana, I haven't been to a library yet( I'm quite busy lately), but I will change that next week. I could visit my two schools though, which I attended when I was 10-18.
