First quarter - (view spoiler)[No idea where I got this got this from but for years I assumed this was a vampire book. I saw the new front cover in my library and my shallow self picked it up and then I realised it was the book I'd been avoiding reading and the synopsis actually sounded exactly like my cup of tea. A quarter in and happy to say that it really is giving me everything I love in a book, so far. I love academy settings and so wished this focused a little more on the girls' training but I am equally as excited to see them get all bad-ass and bloody on the actual missions. (hide spoiler)]

I hate animal deaths in books. Poor Nocturne! I wish I didn't have to read that scene. I do wonder who wished them dead, though.I don't feel it was Duval's plan but it could possibly be the abbess.

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[All this court politics is making for such intriguing reading. This is also denser than I had anticipated. I've been alternating between audio and physical reading and sometime I have to go back a few minutes if I miss something on the audio. There's no tuning anything out in this book.

The romance, despite obvious, feels authentic and is so slowly set up that I am actually quite enjoying it. I usually dislike romance in my fantasies but this one doesn't overshadow the plot at all and so I feel I can get behind it. I'll be devestated if Duval betrays her!

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[This was such a strong start to the series and I'm mad I've avoided it for so long! I wish there was more of a focus on the academy training, or even multiple smaller assassinations before the central story-line begun. I really enjoyed the initial portion but I wanted it extended for far longer than it actually was. This really needs a prequel instalment or novella where the reader can get a further insight to the academy training!

The story-line, however, was still immensely intriguing without this. The court politics were dense and the multitude of characters made this a rich and vibrant read. The family drama that Ismae finds herself involved in was insane, with constant sass, attempts at underscoring the others, assassination attempts, and lies, lies, and more lies! (hide spoiler)]

I think it's because I read Red Sister early this year, which is quite similar and it wasn't one of my favourites. I didn't like the whole going through Nona's school years and training. I wanted blood and carnage haha.

I just don't understand why Ismae had to leave the convent to be with Duval? She says she's not giving up doing Mortain's work, but how do we know that? She might just settle into married life with Duval and never get to kill anyone again. How sad.

Apart from that, one of the best books I've read this year. Loved the world and the political intrigue and especially the murder haha. Just amazing!

As for Ismae, I think she trusts the convent a little too much - and I can understand why. But I think Duval speaks true when he says someone is passing news to the French and the convent just happens to kill people he needs to speak too.
