★★★★ great non typical love story for its era with head strong MCs and an adventurous romance. Will definitely recommend and read the next book in their story.
Finished:
The Thicket 4 starsThis was a really, REALLY good coming of age story. Jack is sixteen and must grow up fast after the death of his parents. The morals he learned as a child are challenged at every turn as he strikes out with 2 strangers (and 1 hog) to save his sister from the three outlaws who kidnapped her after killing their grandfather.
The story flowed easily and had a very colorful cast of characters. I would have rated the book a five for the character development alone, but I felt that the use of racial slurs was overdone, despite being historically accurate. Derogatory labels make me physically cringe and this was just too "in my face," which affected my enjoyment of the story. It's personal preference. Otherwise, it was an amazing story.
