Nooooo! I actually really don't want to see a film about Roland and The Dark Tower!!! Nothing could ever compare to the world I created in my imagination when I read these books, I just don't think I could bring myself to watch the movie when it comes out. Maybe I'm crazy?!
I am in the camp who loves Elba but doesn't think he is a good fit for Roland. That being said, nothing could stop me from watching it.
My first reaction was that this was not a good choice. But I started analyzing my reaction and realized that I was basing this solely on the image of Roland in my head. Elba is a fantastic actor and he'll undoubtedly do a great job. And then I realized: we're talking about The Dark Tower here. There are layers and layers to the Tower. "There are other worlds than these" as Jake once said. So, this film(s) are just another layer, another reflection of the Tower and it doesn't negate or detract in anyway from the books (or even the graphic novels, which are already a sad reflection) in anyway. They are just occupying a different layer of the Tower.
Bring 'em on!

I am more concerned about them f*****g up my absolute favorite series of all time. I think the actor will do a great job but if the script/director/producers screw it up, it won't matter.

I've found with adaptations that you can never please everybody. Really, there are some people that you simply can't please no matter what you do.
They could have Roland Deschain step onto the set and take the role of the Gunslinger, and people would complain that he doesn't fit.

I've always thought of Lance Henriksen (always while reading the books...to me he is Roland) or maybe Stephen Lang. Idris is too young and pretty.

FYI - According to IMDB, Matthew McConaughey is rumored to be Walter/Randal Flagg . . . let more debating begin!Update - After I posted this I noticed that this tidbit is in the article at the top of this post, too . . . I just hadn't noticed it discussed yet.

I actually heard this awhile ago, and at first I was VERY disappointed in the choice of McConaughey - I didn't see him as "dark" enough to play such a key role. But then I saw some of his more recent, more dramatic work and think it might be OK. And what about those Lincoln commercials? Creepers!
Kerry wrote: "And what about those Lincoln commercials? Creepers!"They are! I always think they're ads for weird movies...
Heather wrote: "I've always thought of Lance Henriksen (always while reading the books...to me he is Roland) or maybe Stephen Lang. Idris has the height but he has too much a street ruffian ( Luther, The Wire) aura about him.
I used to picture a young Clint Eastwood, but have pictured Lucas Bryant for the last couple of years and will continue to do so every time I re-read because he is perfect for Roland in my head.https://www.google.com/search?q=lucas...

Perfect - now I will have him in mind as my Roland, too. I am assuming you watched Haven?

Maybe not as many smiles, but he has stoic down pat and his posture is perfect. I’m sure it helps that he has a mostly denim wardrobe and carries a gun, but I just can’t picture anyone other than him since the very first episode of Haven.
It’s also kind of a nice coincidence that he stars (ed) in a show based on King characters.
Yes, watched it all, and yes, can easily see similarities between Nathan and what Roland could be on screen.
Kandice wrote: "I used to picture a young Clint Eastwood, but have pictured Lucas Bryant for the last couple of years and will continue to do so every time I re-read because he is perfect for Roland in my head. ..."Eastwood was always my in-head visualization as well. I hadn't thought of Bryant before, but he would have done well in the roll.
Caviezal? For me he was as bad as Superman as Ryan Reynolds was as Green Lantern. Man of Steel was so awful I wouldn't go see another DC superhero film even if I was paid to do so.
Henriksen would have been an interesting choice, maybe a few years ago. Not sure about now.
Rick wrote: "Kandice wrote: "Caviezal? For me he was as bad as Superman"It was Henry Cavill that played Superman.
Jim Caviezel was Jesus in Passion of the Christ. Or the main special ops guy in the TV show, Person of Interest.
Rick - You are thinking of Henry Cavill in Man of Steel. Caviezel was Jesus in Passion of the Christ, The Count of Monte Cristo, etc.

So true, he is very much the way I picture Roland :)
Rick wrote: "Kandice wrote: "I used to picture a young Clint Eastwood, but have pictured Lucas Bryant for the last couple of years and will continue to do so every time I re-read because he is perfect for Rolan..."Jim Caveizal did not play superman. That honor belongs to Englishman, Henry Cavill.

Well, consider me suitable chastised. ;) I certainly got my actors mixed up. My apologizes to Mr. Caveizal. I'll look up some of his work to educate myself. Although it's a mote point as neither are playing Roland. ;)
Speaking of the DC movies, I'm all in at the moment. I watched that preview they aired the other day on CW for the upcoming movies, and I'm impressed.
Especially with Wonder Woman. The Suicide Squad looks pretty damn good too. Oh, and Jason Momoa as Aquaman - wow!

Suicide Squad looks great, I can't wait to see it. Margot Robbie was an excellent choice for Harley Quinn.
