Renske | 17 comments I think this book was translated from English and took place in the US.
I think the main character was a boy, but I'm not sure about that.
The father of the main character is about to remarry, so the main character comes for a visit to meet his new stepmother. This woman has a daughter with a disability, something like Cerebral palsy/spasticity. The girl is in a wheelchair and can't talk, but can communicate in other ways. Her condition became worse in the past due to a surgery in which something went wrong. She lives in a facility of which the director (or other important person) has the same disability, but he can walk with crutches. He tells also a part of his life story.
At some point the mother mixed ice cream with blueberry sauce, as that is a favourite of the girl. The blue colour of that mixture is a detail the main character focuses on a some point.
I think the story took place in a single weekend.

I read the book in Dutch in 1999/2000, but based on what I remember of style of the cover, that edition was more likely from the 1980's. If it is indeed a translation, the original should be a bit older, but I don't think it can be much older, because of the way they thread the disabled people. It was for around 12 years of age.

Twink for the click for Bookel's suggestion.

Renske | 17 comments I think it is very likely that is the book. And my library has a copy of it. (Only in their special collection which you can only view at the library, but I can at least check if it is really the book I'm looking for.)

bookel | 4029 comments Maybe you could get an inter-library loan, if another library has it and it is borrowable. You could ask your library if that is possible.

Renske | 17 comments It seems there is no other library with a borrowable copy, as the major system for inter-library loans doesn't know the book. And my library is already one of the largest libraries in the country.
But I don't think it is really a problem. With the size of this book I can read it at the library.

Let us know if that IS the book Renske.

Renske | 17 comments I will let it know, I hope I have time to go to the library Monday or Wednesday.

Renske, did you find out if that was your book?

Renske | 17 comments I have not been able to check the book in the library. It takes rather some time to view a book from the special collection and that doesn't fit that easy in my current schedule.
But this is a good reminder to try again.

Renske | 17 comments Today I finally check the book at the library and it is indeed the right book. Thank you!
