SweetT, is Fantasy Lover the first of the Dark Hunter series? I thought about tackling that series but there's like 20 something books! Not counting the Dream Hunters and the other hunter people. I got scared. May have to set aside a month to tackle that. :-)

Would you recommend it?

message 305: by TinaNoir (new)

TinaNoir | 1456 comments I am listening to Rochelle Alers' Pleasure Seekers as an audiobook on my Ipod. Totally digging it so far!

Thanks, SweetT. This sounds like audio book material lol. That way I can go through them while I'm working. :-) I had heard that she uses the same plot devices a lot throughout the series so I may break up each book. Looking forward to your thoughts on more of the series.

message 307: by TinaNoir (new)

TinaNoir | 1456 comments That's interesting that SK removed Fantasy Lover from the Dark Hunter series chronology. When I read them I saw absolutely no connection between Fantasy Lover and the later ones except the Greek Mythology connection. I always questioned why FL was part of the series. I assumed she wanted to write a lighter style paranormal focused on Greek Mythology and was told that she needed to write Vampires because that was what sold.

That said, I wasn't impressed with the series. I stuck it out til about the 6th or 7th book and gave up.

Ah nice - glad to hear that you are digging it.

You know, I've never listened to a book on tape ...

You should try it, Justine. It's pretty fun. Some work more than others and it does depend on how good the narrator reads the book. Some can take you straight out of the book. :-/

Just wanted to give another view on SK. Personally, I love her books. I think that it's best to think of each series as a different thing because comparing them tends to make one series fall short. That's just my experience. I like SK's DarkHunters for the humor, the tortured heroes, and the Greek mythology. I absolutely would not compare them to a darker, more intense universe such as the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I can see you possibly liking the Marjorie Liu series more if you started with that one, SweetT, because the tone is more serious. SK was my first paranormal romance series, and she introduced me to the genre, so I take her series separate from the other ones. I will say that it's either like it or hate it. Some people are dedicated fans, and some really dislike it. My favorite paranormal series is defnitely Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark, followed by a tie between the Ghostwalkers by Christine Feehan, and the Black Dagger Brotherhood by JR Ward. I would say try not to let preconceived notions go in with your reading them, because that does affect you. People were raving about the Midnight Breed series by Lara Adrian. I have read the first three and liked it, but not loved it. I was expecting way too much, and it wasn't fair to the author, because it affected how I perceived it. I think if I had a clear mind, I would have enjoyed it more for its own self.

Also Marjorie Liu has more diverse mythologies that cover more fantastical/mythical creatures than SK. I do like seeing the whole gamut of beings in the paranormal romances. That's part of why I love the Immortals After Dark series. Plus she tackles Norse mythology, which I am fascinated with.

Nothing wrong with that, SweetT. I hope I didn't come off as being critical. I certainly don't mean to be. At the end of the day, we all have different tastes. It is rough reading stuff that's too similar back to back, that's why I don't recommend reading the Black Dagger books and the Midnight Breed books back to back.

Zhadist is still my favourite..I really really felt bad for the things he went through

Right there with you, Sharon. Promiscuity in a romance novel is a huge turn off for me. Too much of that in real life. I don't want to tell others how to live, but I like to spend my free time on things that are worth it. That's not worth it for my precious time. Plus I feel that it was very damaging for JM and I just love him so much. I want better for him. The same for Qhuinn. I lot of fans think his lifestyle is hot. It just makes me sad that he'll sleep with anything that moves. :(

message 344: by new_user (last edited Sep 12, 2009 10:05PM) (new)

new_user I completely agree about Qhuinn. He's a ho, LOL. I think a lot of readers find that hot because they associate many partners with high libido, but that's not the only factor in the frequency of partners; it also has to do with emotional well-being, lack of (as I think we'll learn when we read Qhuinn's book. We already know about his relationship with his family and the glymera. I want to see what happens to poor Blay and that attachment too, though I'm not interested in reading an M/M romance. It's always fun to see a character move on.)

I think I don't mind JM's behavior as much because he so clearly doesn't enjoy it. He's totally acting out. He is a young guy, and we can definitely see that, LOL.

--I agree that JM is acting out. I will be okay about it if he snaps out of it and focuses on more important things in his book. And I hope that things work out for him and Xhex to have a very happy ending.

Yeah that was awful how his family treated him. That's part of his sex problem. He has love self esteem.

message 348: by Davina (new)

Davina D. | 796 comments Currently reading Dark Torment by Karen Robarbs. Due to work, I've been on this book for weeks and probably won't finish it until October. Oh how I miss the lazy days of summer when work was just a distant thought. It is my first by this author. I'm enjoying the story but I deem the heroine to be quite violent and somewhat shrewish. I still like her though, but I don't approve of the violence (especially since it wouldn't be acceptable for the hero to retaliate).

Total Freudian slip. But very appropriate.

Davina, Dark Torment is an old school fave of mine. It's definitely a bodice ripper from back in the day but I enjoyed it. We missed seeing you around on here.
