Tori | 7 comments How was Scream My Name?

Davina, I just finished it this afternoon. It's two stories connected by Aunt Sadie's Cafe. I really liked the first one. As a writer, I was impressed by the set up of tension and the relationship between the main character and the setting, her great aunt's cafe. The second story is about the secondary characters in the first. It moved a little too fast but I think KKT is very good at writing sex scenes. I would definitely recommend it.

Giselle Simone (papercuts) | 28 comments At the moment I'm not reading anything interracial or particularly romantic.

The Reader by Bernhard Schlink - About a relationship between a 30-something year old woman and a 15 year old boy. Their relationship ends without closure for him and years later he's still impacted by his relationship with this woman. Eventually things come to a head when he recognizes her in a courtroom, where she is on trial for a horrible crime.

Candide by Voltaire - Focuses on the life of an illegitimate nephew of a German Baron.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde - Relates the story a man who wishes for eternal youth and how it corrupts him once fate grants his desire.

You know what? I really couldn't get myself to like Liza in PMH at all, either.

I didn't let that turn me off from KKT completely, though. Just Like Candy was a much better book, IMO (Liza from PMH does reappear in it, and so does Karina from DOAL). I haven't read Scream My Name, but it's in my TBR pile.

new_user You might like it since you like horror, Danielle. I thought it was too creepy and bleak compared to his other works. His wit doesn't really shine in Dorian Gray. The Importance of Being Earnest has always been one of my favorites. It's a brilliant commentary and hilarious at the same time.

Candide is also funny and clever. Good stuff.

I like the creepy stuff. I'm not so into the bleak debauchery, though. I guess that's why I've been putting it off. I like an upbeat ending. I'm pretty weird. I like dark and kinda twisted but I want a happy ending. LOL.

Their relationship starts out being based solely on sex, and over the course of the novel he begins to have unrealistic expectations of a future with her. I haven't gotten to part two of the book, yet. So, I'll let you know how it goes.

As I was checking out at BN the cashier told me that she just couldn't get into it. And she thought that it was more his writing style than anything.

LOL. It's not really creepy and bleak because of the debauchery but because of the ending. The message is shallowness = you're doomed, LOL.

Oooooh. Thanks Giselle. I'll wait and see what you think of the second part while I keep it on hold. I can definitely understand the cashier's mention of the writing style because sometimes that keeps me from getting into a book also. But I'll put this in my "maybe" file for now.

That's kind of icky for a 30something woman sleeping with a 15 year old.

message 116: by Davina (new)

Davina D. | 796 comments I've read The Reader and while I thought it was okay, literary wise, I didn't like the story. I have a serious problem with the glamourisation of adults having sex with children (even when they can legally consent). I disliked Lolita by Nabahkov for the same reason.

message 117: by Davina (last edited Jul 29, 2009 06:32AM) (new)

Davina D. | 796 comments Not to mention if the sexes were reversed and it was a man deflowering a 15 year old girl, there'd've been a huge moral outcry, pretty much like what happened both when Lolita was published in the US and made into a film. I hate double standards. What's sauce for the goose ought to be sauce for the gander.

Good review! Now I see why you rated the book that way lol.

I've only read one Jade Lee book. The Concubine which was a Blaze and it was interesting but not spectacular. I liked the Chinese cultural bent but the story could have been a bit better (and I wish it was longer and more in depth for the time but it was a category). I wanted to try more of her longer works to see if they were better but I may have to do some digging.

Davina D. | 796 comments I was reading Blue Skies by Catherine Anderson, but it ended up being a wallbanger for me. Now I'm reading an oldie, but hopefully a goodie: Jayne Ann Krentz's Grand Passion. She tends to overwhelm her contemporaries with too much mystery and too little romance, but overall I think she's a good writer. I always enjoy her work.

On audio, I'm listening to Time Traveler's Wife, Outlander and The Help all at once! So far they're not very engaging but eveyone says listen on because they get better.

I read your rant. Everything you're saying makes sense. I don't think a woman should ever give up responsibility for her own actions and her body to a man. If she goes into sex, she should do it with her mind aware of all the consequences. I don't think having sex with someone who is totally drunk is a good idea anyway.

Ladies, the library sent me an email letting me know that Hot Pursuit was ready to be picked up. Wow, I'm special, because I'm the first to get the book. Someone else had gotten to audio book. I don't get those. I had a chance to go get the book on my break. I can't wait until I get home.

Sam and Alyssa are the lead, but let me say, it's not Gone Too Far. They aren't really walking in romance shoes. I'm only on page 168. Gillman is in the second romance category and it seems as if he's getting more book time. I guess, because he has to find his HEA.

TinaNoir | 1456 comments I just read (and reviewed ) Pennywise by Jill Brock. it is a mystery in the vein of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum. Lots of humor. It is an IR story in two ways. The main characters are IR best friends Maggie is white (suburban housewife, tiny, Irish, Redhead, shops at Wal-Mart eats at Burger King) while Odessa is a black (lapsed Black American Princess, tall and lanky, shops at Neiman Marcus etc.) They are a fun pair. Also, Odessa gets an IR love interest in the story. I hope she plans to write more about these two because I'd totally read more about them.
