I'm not a paranormal junkie, but on occasion I don't mind it. I'm around page 117 and so far it has worked merely as a filler (that is to say, providing details about the characters' world and how it works, explanations of terminologies, mythologies etc). However, the action is starting to pick up and the hero and heroine are officially together in present time. Before they've only met in each other's dreams. At the point where I am now, I'm just thinking what next? I'll have to read further to form a concrete opinion of the story.
I'm usually not a fan of this author (I've read her before and was not impressed with her voice or characterisation), but I've committed to reading this and two of her other books in the same series.
To carry on, I just came from browsing at Amazon and a thread about Audrey Niffenneger's The Time Traveler's Wife reminded me that my aunt loaned me this book when I arrived here two and half weeks ago.
She loves the book and says it's a romance for the most part, but it doesn't end with a HEA. Usually this is not a problem for me if I'm in the right frame of mind to read such a story. But certain events that has taken place in the novel (as described by the Amazon posters) have me concerned.
So perhaps I'll end up reading something entirely different after my SK run. Or I'll end up listening to it on audio sometime in the future.

I'm currently reading Shadow Touch by Marjorie Liu. It's the second book (third story) in the Dirk and Steel series. It's pretty good so far. The hero is a Russian emigree to the US who has the ability to see things when he touches objects. He's pretty tortured. The heroine can heal people. They have both been kidnapped by a secret and apparently nefarious organization. They haven't met yet. This is one of those books that goes a bit slow and you just have to hang in there. But in my experience, it's usually worth it to keep reading.
I really enjoyed Kiss of the Night, Davina. But as you know, I'm a pretty steadfast Kenyon fan. I think The Time-Traveler's Wife is too sad for me to read (from what I know of the story). I hope you enjoy it though.

I have a book that I will not finish and that's Nerd Gone Wild by Vicki Thompson. I love nerds, but this book is not my cup of tea. According to this book, Mitch was a nerd in school, but changed his imagine when he became a PI and bodyguard. He gotten a job working for a rich lady. He goes back to playing the nerd role. The old lady dies and leaves everything to her granddauther Ally. Who was living with her and Mitch when she was alive. Mitch and Ally never really talked, but the ice started to break a little, when Ally goes to Alaska to get her feet wet in photography. Her uncle told her that he could help her meet someone that could help her. A fried of his. The uncle is up to something bad. His mother didn't leave him money.
Well, Mitch follows Ally, because he states that she has to sign some papers. He's over the paperwork, etc. But, really her grandmother hired him to bodyguard Ally.
Long story short, Ally finds out that Mitch likes her and she's trying to fight the feelings, but she likes him too. Blah! Blah!
They are staying at an old prostitution house. It's a hotel now. A bed and breakfast type of place. The owner is a naughty woman. She loves taking men back to her room to show them where the prostitutions use to be.
Again, this book is not my cup of tea. I can't believe that I have gotten to page 288. It has been over a week and I haven't read the book. I'm bringing it back Saturday.

I'm currently reading Mirror Blue by Thomma Lyn Grindstaff. It's a May/December contemporary and it's pretty good so far! The hero and the heroine have lots of chemistry. She's sort of had this hero worship of him for a while since she really loved his books and she recently went to his book signing. She's a web designer and she ends up redesigning his webpage and now they're starting to get interested in each other. He also has an ex-wife and she just meant her. The tension was definitely heavy in that scene she was really sneakily trying to make the heroine feel inferior. I'm eager to see where it goes after this.
Arch, I was tempted to read that book but I heard the hero changed so I wasn't too interested after that. :-/

Hey Rae, what's the age difference in Mirror Blue? It sounds good.

Mitch isn't my type of nerd. "
I don't like Vicki Lewis Thompson's heroines, so that's why I haven't read the Nerd books. I wish another author had come up with the idea first.

Arch, it's a romance where the hero and heroine's ages span a good years apart. I think the threshold is like 15 or more years. I like older hero/youner heroines myself. :-)
Danielle, I believe the heroine is 33 and the hero is 52. It's really sweet and I like the author's style. I think you'd like it.
I hope more authors come up with the nerd idea.not with this angle though.

I don't think that I will be reading the other nerd books from Vicki. I've read The Nerd Who Loved Me. It was book number 2 and it was better than Nerd Gone Wild. This is book number 3.
I read a book for the hero. If the heroine is a compliment to the hero. That's good.

Arch, thanks for your review on the VLT book. I've had those books on my tbr for only God knows how long. I've never felt compelled to read them. Very few authors can write a beta hero I can respect so I tend to stay away from books with nerds.
I read a category romance by Leanne Banks once, Seducing the Senator I believe its called. The hero was in his 50s too, while the heroine was in her 30s. The story was tolerable, but I must admit to rearranging a the hero's age to about 45. For me, 45 is the cut-off age for a hero. Anything over that messes with my mental picture of him. For a heroine, its about the same, as long as she's not with some 20 something hero (then I won't read that story at all because I'm in my 40s and my oldest child is 22 ... its, just, no.)
The thing about Mitch is that he wants Ally to look upon him as a nerd, because he doesn't want to know about his other side. His PI and Bodyguard side. I can understand that Ally's grandmother wanted him to protect Ally from harm. But, if you are a nerd, then be a true nerd and not a pretend nerd.
Ally and Mitch shares a conjoining bathroom. In one scene, while Ally is taking a shower, she screams because the water turns cold and Mitch breaks the door down, because he thinks she's in danger. She's surprise, because here stands before her a nerd. She didn't know that he was able to do such a thing. Mitch plays it off. He didn't want her to know his other side.
Come on! Nerds can break down a door.
Mitch doesn't want Ally to see how built he is. Come on again. A lot of nerds are built. Not all nerds are men behind glasses and dress like Urkel.
What I like about Wildcard from Suzanne's books is that he doesn't disguise his nerd side. Yes, he's this deadly navy seal, who can kill you without blinking, but yet he's a nerd.
I like the "always nerd".
Dave Malkoff is a always nerd. He doesn't try to hide the fact that he's a nerd. He's a nerd that has been in the CIA and now works for TI. He's a nerd that knows how to use a gun.
I want real nerds stories. Not a nerd trying to be a nerd to hide a different side to him.

That is an excellent point. I don't like pretend nerds either. I like true nerds. It's like beauties pretending to be plain janes. I really hate that.

Now reading Branded by Fire, part of a futuristic PNR series about a war between mentally gifted people and shapeshifting people (simplifying a lot here, LOL.) I love this series, but this installment, the heroine is conceited, bordering on cruel. But the rest of the suspense plot is great. :D
Mercy got on my nerves, but I loved the book inspite of her. I think she got away with murder and poor Riley got raked over the coals for the one decision he made (I don't know if you got there, but I didn't think it was that bad myself).
Thanks, Maya. I love A Wrinkle in Time. An old favorite of mine. Still have my first copy displayed with pride on the bookshelf in my study.

Sascha is a one of a kind character. Not sure I can come up with another guy like him. Alas.

I agree, NU. I think he did more of the giving. She does come through in the end, but I thought she was just being mean for no good reason most of the book. He deserved better than that. I don't think a woman has to be a byotch to be alpha.

That's a very appealing element about her books, Loni. She's a good writer. I'm glad you liked Shadow Touch. So far I am liking it. Pretty dark, but good.

Nah not too big at all. And I believe the hero and heroine have some nerdish tendencies (the heroine especially) which I'm really enjoying. :-) I'll definitely be sure to post my review.
Maya, I so know what you mean. I'm pretty sure I'll be measuring up other heroes to Sascha from now on. He's officially my new favorite. Danielle, you kicked booty with him, girl!

Same here! I have two books looking at me that I started but I'm playing faves since I'm in a hardcore dark romance/literary love story kinda mood. Hehe.
Davina wrote: "A Wrinkle in Time is written by whom? And the mention of Mercy ... as in Mercy Thompson (or Thomas, whatever her name is)? "
A Wrinkle in Time is written by Madeline L'Engle. It's a young adult science fiction novel.
Mercy is the heroine from Branded by Fire by Nalni Singh.

Rae I'd recommend the Darkyn series by Lynn Viehl if you want something a little dark. I read the first two and they are excellent. I know that New User and Justine love them.
I've started The Sheik by Lynne Wilding on my break today and read some more for lunch. So far the book is good. I know that Danielle loves to read about Sheiks. I will share my thought on this interracial book, when I finish it.

Oh yes! They've been sitting on my shelf. I'm taking a mini break from paranormals (although I may make an exception for the dark romance woo hoo) but once I get back I'm definitely diving into that. I keep hearing good things about the series. :-) Thanks Danielle!

Same here, Eugenia. I read different books at the same time for variety. And there are some books I can't just read straight through. I'll read them in chunks and read other books in the meantime.
I thought that I have added Lynne Wilding book to my shelf, but I didn't and that's strange. I even tried to look up the book and it can't be found. I will have to put in the ISBN number again to see if the book comes up and under what name.
