R7: SS "Nine Hit Wonders" (9)

Wow, Team 8 is on spot 94! We might only have two weeks left!

I'll be reading

Good luck with your exams, Maddison! I'm going to check out that series you're reading for this week. Since I like The Walking Dead t.v. show, maybe I'll like reading about zombies too!

And I'm going away on Friday of this week. I know I'll get it finished on that Friday, but I won't be able to update. So can I just send in my review and say I finished it when I actually haven't? Because I won't be back until like Tuesday, and that only gives 3 days for the next book.
Week 10 - Spot 57
Alternate: set in Florida
Wonderby Cameron Jace
How it fits: book 5 in the Insanity series
Date finished: 03/21/16
Rating: ★★★★★
Review:
I didn't think the insane could become more insane until I read this book. I absolutely loved Mr Tick and Mrs. Tock. Their idea of fun is freezing time and messing with people just to see the chaos that ensues. They send Alice to the future and back in time to find the keys. Alice learns a lot about herself during these trips. Will Alice be able to save Jack and find her "wonder"?
I absolutely love this series even though it is slowly driving me mad. Is Alice good or evil? Who will win the Wonderland Wars? As it is said many times in the book "we are all mad here". Maybe book 6 will make some sense out of the insanity. Either way, I certainly can't wait to read it!

This one was funny. I'm a sucker for hockey books even though I have no interest in watching a game in my life. It was new author for me and I had my expectation low and no preset standard of excellence. I like this one because it wasn't to heavy into technical jargon of hockey. Lane was a refreshing character with no mouth filter. I definitely interested in continuing this series and exploring this author's works.

Yes, will do! But I'm predicting that a couple teams will be racing to the finish line this weekend. We shall see!

I am finishing the last few pages of my book. Will post review tonight.

Maddison wrote: "Ah right. So this challenge will be over soon? We aren't even halfway yet! That's not fair how it's just the luck of the dice."
Yeah, but it's the same as board games -- you roll the dice to move forward. I suppose we could keep going if our team wanted to make it to 100.

At the start, I didn't think I was going to like this one much, but as it got nearer to the end I started enjoying it more. It was a different kind of book, with more new characters, journal entries and new types of creatures. I liked it. It also continued on nicely from the other books. I was so glad when (view spoiler) yet so pissed off when (view spoiler) And then at the end, when (view spoiler) I've read this series so quickly, I feel like I can't differentiate the books in it. That's why I don't normally read books so close together, but I had to for a challenge. And I suppose it means I don't forget things.
Good book :)["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

How it Fits 5th in series

I have enjoyed all of these books. Matt tries to stay away from Grace because he has too many demons and knows he will mess it up. He is a complete jerk to her at times, however I was glad to see that Grace wouldn’t let his horrible behavior drive her off permanently. Some of Matt’s demons weren’t surprising when they came to light because they surrounded around his step mother. What I did find surprising was Matt going to Arizona to see his dying father. He finally met his brother that he was never allowed to see and found out that he has been living on his own since their father went to Hospice a couple months ago. Matt didn't want Justin having the life he did, so he decided to take him home with him after their father died.
Matt always played himself the jerk who didn’t want any strings attached. As Grace started breaking down those walls, she got to see the real him who took care of those he loved and cared for injured animals. I really loved this book and can’t wait for the final one in the series.

Book read:
Big Bunny Bump Off by Kathi Daley
Date finished: 03/23/16
How it fits: #5 in the Zoe Donavan series
Rating: ★★★
Review: In this 5th installment of the Zoe Donavan Mystery series, the murder victim is a banker who has been including shady wording in bank loans that allow him to foreclose quickly on properties leaving the owners out of luck and homeless. Zoe stumbles onto the dead body after seeing a man in a bunny suit running away from the bank. She dons her amateur sleuthing hat to solve yet another murder in this small town. This series is good if you like animals (Zoe runs a zoo/animal shelter) and if you want to read a quick little mystery.

Maddison wrote: "And if someone else reaches or passes 100, will that be game over? And will we stop reading?"
Right, as soon as a team reaches the 100 spot and posts their reviews for that final spot, the game is over and we would stop reading.

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
Date finished: 03/27/16
How it fits: Alternate -- on Beautiful Covers list, pg. 2
Rating: ★★★★
Review: This is my second time reading this book because I needed a refresher before Book 2 is released later this year. The story is told from the viewpoints of Laia and Elias. Laia is a Scholar whose family is killed and her brother is captured by the Martials, the rulers. Laia seeks out the Resistance, Scholar rebels, to help rescue her brother. They agree to help in exchange for Laia spying on the Commandant, leader of Blackcliff Academy. So she goes undercover as a slave-girl to the Commandant who happens to be Elias's mother. Elias is a student in his senior year at Blackcliff Academy, but he wants to desert because he hates it there. But he is one of the top students, and he now finds himself one of four members of a Trial that will determine who the next emperor will be. I enjoyed this novel. Laia did annoy me a little, but I liked her at the end. I liked Elias all the way through. The background/history of the Scholar society was interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing how the story continues in Book 2 this August.

Throne of Glass is on the Beautiful Covers list, so you could read that for this week's book.

I absolutely love this series but I still have a hard time thinking of Dorothy as the bad guy. It must be all the years of watching "The Wizard of Oz". The end left me a little confused. I have absolutely no idea what is gonna happen next. However, I can't wait to find out so I will have to look for book 3 really soon.

Alternate: Text item desk
Book read:
How it fits: Text item desk on pg. 25: His desk was a richly carved mahogany thing, with fantastical faces and giant clawed feet that reminded Jess, always, of the Library lions.
Date finished: 03/17/16
Rating: ★★★★
Review: I loved this book! Jess is from a family of book smugglers in a future London where no one is allowed to own personal copies of books. All books are housed in Great Libraries around the world. Jess's father presses him into going into training to be a librarian to get him an insider at the Great Library. Once Jess starts his training, it totally reminds me of the t.v. show Quantico! The group has to face challenges, students are routinely eliminated, and there is even a standoff by a group of students who refuse to do what they're told, just like in Quantico! That was entertaining seeing the similarities. It was also interesting learning about this world and how they kept trying to stifle the invention of the printing press. I'm looking forward to reading the next book whenever it comes out!
