We're approaching the half-way point for the year! My goal is to get all caught up in my reviews so at least I'll know for sure what I've read so far and what I still need to read. How is everyone else doing with their challenges?
I just updated my list. I've made some good progress but not sure if I'll get them all finished in the next few months. Still trying though!
I am really happy with my spread of books so far. The comic book and graphic novel section will end up a lot longer once I actually go through them, but I think the only one that I might not manage is a book of poetry. I didn't think that what I read is this varied, but I didn't really go out of my way at all to read something just to cross it off the list. Everything was something that I was already planning on reading.
Yes, I prefer doing it that way, just reading what I want and seeing the categories get filled up. Come late November, I may feel the urge to go looking for some particular books to fill in a couple of blanks though.
I'll assume you've already looked through the ones that others have posted on their lists. :)
The Unfinished Revolution: Voices from the Global Fight for Women's Rights, I really enjoyed this, but it is cheating a tiny bit because I think something like 2 of the 40 some contributors are men.
Any of these Women of Wonder collections: https://www.goodreads.com/series/1071...
Daughters of Earth: Feminist Science Fiction in the Twentieth Century, again a tiny cheat since it's 20 out of 22 female.
500 Great Books By Women (this wasn't so readable for me, but many find it an amazing resource)
Elemental Magic, as I recall quite fun
Things I haven't read but that look appealing:
Without a Net: The Female Experience of Growing Up Working Class
Bent on Writing: Contemporary Queer Tales (not sure what the gender balance in this is though)
Nineteenth-Century Stories by Women: An Anthology
I'm not sure what the gender balance in these Tiptree winner collections are, but I bet they would be great reading: https://www.goodreads.com/series/1859...

I've got TWO left!! For anybody looking for a poetry suggestion I highly recommend milk and honey by Rupi Kaur. It's a punch straight to the gut in the best kind of way!
Amanda wrote: "I need an anthology rec. I don't think I've ever read any kind of anthology collection."I'm waiting for mine to come in on interlibrary loan—I'm going to read Thirty Ways of Looking at Hillary, edited by Susan Morrison. So I can't say yet whether or not it's good, but I'm looking forward to it!
Finished! Woohoo I've got one for every category. I haven't counted how many women authors I read total yet I will do that towards the end of the month.
That's an excellent question Paul! Opinions? Who likes to change things around and who likes a sense of continuity? Any categories of less interest or things missing?

Amanda congratulations!!! You are amazing and a role model for all of us!

The first two are redundant. If one reads the other categories, they include both fiction and non-fiction. More regional works (Asia, Africa, South America, etc.) Would be an interesting challenge that would also encourage some reflection on how cultural context affects the female experience. I regret the fact that European writers disproportionally influenced my thinking up to this point. One could spend their whole life only reading Japanese authors and never lack for a good book.
Good suggestions - thanks! Perhaps as well as being more specific about different regions, we could be more specific about different eras?
In order to mix things up properly, going to need more suggestions here!

I rather like the first two categories. The other categories aren't exhaustive. If you want to list everything that you read, it would be pretty hard to do in just the other ones.I'd like more era categories. Even just one category for something written before 1900 would be great.
The one genre whose absence I felt was crime novels and thrillers. It feels like it should be right next to the romance novels, since it's historically been a genre that female authors have been very successful in.
Other than being really bad at reviewing all of the comics that I read this year, I'm rather happy with my list, especially since I read less than usual this year.
