Candiss (tantara) | 1207 comments Happy New Year, everyone!

Please let us know what you are reading or planning to read in January.

message 2: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 415 comments My goal for this year is to clear out some TBR backlog. So I'm kicking off 2016 with a non-sff read that's been on my shelf for 10 years, To Rule the Waves: How the British Navy Shaped the Modern World. So far it's pretty good!

message 3: by Wolf_Maiden (new)

Wolf_Maiden | 17 comments Today, I just finished off The Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan. Now, I'm starting Among Others by Jo Walton.

message 4: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (robotwitch) | 65 comments I've just started Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke today, after meaning to have read it in December. After that, I'm planning on reading Carrie, which will be my first Stephen King, and then Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett. Then, possibly, Stray by Andrea K. Host, my first self-published read in years.

I'm also still reading Dark Entries by Robert Aickman, having started in December.

Lindsey, you're book sounds fascinating! I look forward to hearing how you found it when you're done.

message 5: by Kathi, Moderator & Book Lover (new)

Kathi | 4330 comments Mod
I am about halfway through Dust of Dreams and plan to go right into The Crippled God. After that, who knows? A break from Malazan, I think.

message 6: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I'm reading an anthology Sing A Song of the Stars. Pretty good so far.

message 7: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1430 comments Lulu wrote: "I've just started Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke today, after meaning to have read it in December. ."

Do you plan on watching the Miniseries they just televised?

message 8: by Tani (new)

Tani | 132 comments I'm hoping to get caught up on/finish some series that I've previously started this year, so I finished up Fairest by Marissa Meyer earlier today, and moved directly on to Winter, the last book in the Lunar Chronicles. I've loved the rest of the series, so I'm very excited to read it.

Shel (shel99) | 3139 comments Mod
I just got back from visiting my in-laws, and on the trip I finished The Traitor Baru Cormorant and started a mystery Broken Harbor, which I've just finished today. I think next I am going to read Life After Life, which I've been wanting to read for a long time and was just a kindle daily deal yesterday so I bought it.

message 10: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 636 comments I didn't manage to finish Luna: New Moon in December, so it's become my first read of 2016 by default:)

Wolf_Maiden, Among Others is awesome! I hope you enjoy it. Keep a notebook handy to keep track of all the reading suggestions you get from it. It's essentially a love letter to science fiction and books in general.

Yes, it was my motivation to finally read it, if I'm honest. I've been meaning to for years, but sometimes I need a film or series to be able to bump it up the ol' TBR :) Have you seen it yet?

message 12: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1430 comments Yeah, I was rather disappointed with it
All over the place, acting wasnt well done

message 13: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I'm reading The Walking Dead, Book Eleven and The Walking Dead, Book One. I love how they're grouped together like this.

message 14: by Ken (last edited Jan 02, 2016 08:01PM) (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1430 comments I just finished Beleiver
Not bad, background of what happens in an election from an Obama political operator.

Starting on some SF for the first new book of 2016
Bit of a toss up between three books
Settled on
Seveneves

Oh dear! I'll let you know what I think next week.

message 17: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 415 comments Library hold for Tower of Thorns came in so I switched to that. Read it in just two days, so safe to say, very good! Hadn't read any Juliet Marillier before this series, so now I have a new author to catch up on.

Still enjoying To Rule the Waves. Slow going (like all NF) but worth my time so far.

message 18: by Christine (new)

Christine | 637 comments I'm still reading off topic
I just finished Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family about a transgender girl and her identical twin brother; a very interesting read
Now I'm starting Make Me; I haven't read a new Jack Reacher book for some time

message 19: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 636 comments I just finished The Scorpio Races; it is my first favourite book of 2016. So amazing:)

message 20: by Bill (new)

Bill (reedye) | 60 comments Loved that too Justine. Have you seen this? http://www.theguardian.com/childrens-...
I know you are a fan. Not got to this one yet myself. Next probably. I'm currently on Baru Cormorant and for light relief The Girl Who Could Not Dream

Lol, yes I've been fairly obvious about my love for her, haven't I?

No I hadn't seen that article or heard the news about the Costa, so thank you for that! I haven't yet read The Lie Tree; I am planning on doing a buddy read of it with my buddy read group in May. I would have done it sooner but one of the group is completing her thesis and so we all decided to wait and read it together after she is done.

I'm really looking forward to it!:)

If you still haven't got to it by then, you're welcome to join us if you like?

message 22: by Christine (new)

Christine | 637 comments I love these comments as I find so many new books to read! My library doesn't have The Lie Tree but has several others by her which I can get

message 23: by Bill (new)

Bill (reedye) | 60 comments Christine. Get any Hardinge. Every book is a joy.

message 24: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 636 comments It's still pretty new Christine...do they have Cuckoo Song? That was released in 2014 and was the most recent before The Lie Tree.

message 25: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 636 comments Ha ha Bill, we are on the same wavelength:)

Christine | 637 comments Justine wrote: "It's still pretty new Christine...do they have Cuckoo Song? That was released in 2014 and was the most recent before The Lie Tree."

I've already read Cuckoo Song and enjoyed it

message 27: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 636 comments Of course...I should have remembered that! Fly by Night is really good. But as Bill says, all her books are lovely.

message 28: by Andreas (new)

Andreas Any fans of K.J. Parker around? The soon-to-appear novella Downfall of the Gods is really good! Here is my review.

message 29: by Pickle (new)

Pickle | 203 comments half way through the excellent Stormrider and think i'll switch to some sci-fi after maybe Old Man's War, then continue with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

If i have time left i'll read a Philip K Dick book.

message 30: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 636 comments I like that you got a picture of your kids in front of the TARDIS Pickle; that was a lucky shot:)

message 31: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 636 comments I read a really good out of genre contemporary YA book, None of the Above by I.W. Gregorio. I'm now just starting The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. After that, I'm planning to read Last Song Before Night by Ilana C. Myer.

message 32: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 415 comments Read The Girl on the Train for my IRL book club. Not impressed.

Back to To Rule the Waves. Seriously, I'd forgotten just how slow NF can be. Got to hurry up through this one before The Bands of Mourning arrives later this month! :-)

message 33: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1430 comments Finished Seveneves.
Not bad, wasnt enamoured with the huge info dumps though.

In honour of the Oregon milita thing I am reading
No Heroes: A Memoir of Coming Home
Its about an FBI guy and the HRT unit in the FBI.
So far its not bad, I find his cockiness annoying though

message 34: by Christine (new)

Christine | 637 comments I finished Devoted in Death which I enjoyed; now back in genre with City of Stairs

message 35: by Shel, Moderator (new)

Shel (shel99) | 3139 comments Mod
I just plowed through Gunmetal Magic in three days - I adore the Kate Daniels books, and this was no exception even though it wasn't focused on Kate.

Short stories next, I think - I'm too busy this week to get sucked into something that I'll have trouble putting down! I've got an Octavia Butler collection I just picked up, and a few other anthologies on the kindle that I could dive into.

message 36: by Viv (new)

Viv JM I may be the last person to get around to The Martian which I am listening to this month. I have just placed an order at the library for The Goddess Chronicle so am hoping that will arrive in time to get started on in January too.

message 37: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1430 comments Not the last person, thats me. Ha
I was going to read it last fall, but felt I should wait till later and see
the movie blind. Will read it sometime in April or May then watch the movie again

message 38: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 636 comments I just read it in December because I wanted to read it before seeing the movie. I think after seeing the movie that was a good idea; there were a few things I probably would have missed if I hadn't read the book first. Although of course there was a lot of stuff from the book that was just cut out of the movie.

message 39: by Kathi, Moderator & Book Lover (new)

Kathi | 4330 comments Mod
No, I'M last. ;-)
Hope to read it at some point and will watch the movie this year.

I have been watching the SyFy series and they have some interesting changes from the book. For me the book wasnt perfect but I enjoyed it enough to attempt to continue on.

I'm really, really (well, sort of) trying to not buy more books. I have hundreds on my shelves I have yet to read, not to mention my iPad. There are many the group has read that I have not, and some of them I have on my list to buy if I see them at a used book store.

message 49: by Random (new)

Random (rand0m1s) | 1247 comments That's hard to do. There is just something so pleasing about getting new books. :)
