Francesca Haig is the author of the post-apocalyptic Fire Sermon trilogy (The Fire Sermon; The Map of Bones; and The Forever Ship), translated into more than 20 languages.

Her latest novel, The Cookbook of Common Prayer, is published in June 2021 (UK; July 2021 for Australia and New Zealand).

Francesca gained her PhD from the University of Melbourne, and worked as an academic before becoming a full-time writer. Her poetry has been widely published. She grew up in Tasmania, and currently lives in London.

Eliot's immortal poem 'Th…moreThanks so much, Julie - delighted that you enjoyed The Fire Sermon! As for the title: I first came across the phrase in T.S. Eliot's immortal poem 'The Waste Land.' From the minute I ecountered the phrase, it really stuck in my mind. It turned out that Eliot had taken the phrase from an important Buddhist teaching about about detachment from earthly things and emotions. This seemed to fit with some of the ideas of my novel - but if I'm honest, I was hooked on the phrase before I'd even googled it to learn more about it. I found those three words alone so powerfully evocative. There's a couple of lines in the first page or so where I try to give some context for the title, within the world of the novel ('Before the blast, they say there’d been sermons about fire, about the end of the world. The fire itself gave the last sermon; after that there were no more.').(less)

Francesca Haig answered Fiona Stone's question: I am reading the cookbook of common prayer and am puzzled and intrigued by the place of death. Why Buckinghamshire? there are plenty of caves and underground rivers that flash flood, but not in Buckinghamshire. The only ‘caves’ are the man made “Hellfire” caves, spectacular in their construction and use but hard to drown in and no good for caving/ potholing or spelunking.
