What Are You Reading 2016 Edition
Just finished The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. Now I'm starting Fantastic Voyage for a challenge in another group.
I'm finishing up Dead Man's Walk, which is the third book in the Lonesome Dove series. It's not as good as the prior two but it's a prequel and it's funny to see Gus and Call so green. It's hilarious.
Since my last post, I’ve finished the Red Rising trilogy. I’m not one to thumb my nose at a book just because it’s hyped and it appeals to a broader audience, but this series is a case where I personally don’t understand the hype. I did think it improved as it progressed, but it got quite repetitive at times and the storyline seemed fairly generic. Where the author shone for me was in his depiction of friendships and teamwork. The series had some great moments, and I did enjoy it, but it wasn’t as good as I had hoped. My reviews:Book 1
Book 2
Book 3
After that, I read Reaper Man, the 2nd book in the Death subseries of Discworld. I liked it, and it had some good humor, but the story dragged for me at times. My Review
Yesterday, I finished Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut. I liked it quite a bit. My Review
Last night, I started City of Bones by Martha Wells.
I recently finished reading The Warded Man, Book 1 in the Demon Cycle series. I usually don't read fantasy but this was a unique story that I found rather fascinating. Has anyone else read this series?

I listened to Dark Matter. I got a review copy of the audio, which I believe comes out this week. I liked it, but didn't love it. (My Review)I also did some comics/manga:
Ms. Marvel, Vol. 5: Super Famous. This series continues to delight me. (My Review)
Attack on Titan 20 . Things are really ramping up now. (My Review)
Rob wrote: "I listened to Dark Matter. I got a review copy of the audio, which I believe comes out this week. I liked it, but didn't love it. (My Review)..."This is good to know. I have that one as a maybe for later in the year and I'm looking to ditch some books :)
I just finished the first book in a new trilogy Hell Divers by Nicholas Sansbury Smith. It was unique and exciting. My review is here:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
My July reading included Nexus (4), Cat's Cradle (3), The Road (3), and Spin (3).
I am currently reading The Aeronaut's Windlass and Ubik.
Finished my Wodehouse digression, now reading The Gallery of Lost Species. Picked it up off the "new fiction" shelf at my university library, knowing nothing about it. Quite good so far.
I've read the first hundred pages of Mr. Splitfoot, and it's okay, but I've got a long airplane flight tomorrow and would rather bring books that I own, rather than a library book. So, I think I'll take it back and start instead Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements or Black Dove, White Raven.
Listening to As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride. I am now thinking that this year's Halloween costumes will be Buttercup and Westley.

It's a fun series with a swashbuckling, three musketeer type vibe to it. I thought it was just supposed to be a trilogy but apparently there's going to be a fourth book.

I really like this series. It's a complete fun reading.

Sarah Anne wrote: "I'm reading The Power of One, or listening anyway. I'm completely loving it."That is such a good book. That and April Fool's Day were his best books.
Michele wrote: "Yes! Brilliant :)."It was.
Now, listening to Ashes of Honor. This is my second visit with this book. Still amazing.
I STILL haven't read any October Daye! I've owned the first one for two or three years. I didn't think of audio.
Sarah Anne wrote: "I STILL haven't read any October Daye! I've owned the first one for two or three years. I didn't think of audio."This is easily one of my favorite fantasy series. This second read has made me appreciate the series even more. There are small tidbits that don't stand out with the first read, but having read later books in the series, I now recognize how brilliantly McGuire sows the seeds for later events.

I downloaded it so it will wave in my face constantly :)
I tried listening to Grimspace and I'm really not into it. I feel like the writing is pretty cheesy.
I just finished Stiletto and Foxglove Summer both great additions to their respective series although Stiletto wasn't quite as good as The Rook where the Rivers of London series keeps getting better.

I recently did a reread and was amazed at how much is there if you only know to look for it.
Hank wrote: "Now the question is The Aeronaut's Windlass or The Passage next?"Probably The Passage. Get the dark and unsettling (but good) one out of the way and the The Aeronaut's Windlass will probably be a breath of fresh air. I haven't read it but I'm guessing it's fun.
Mary wrote: "I just finished Six of Crows, which I enjoyed a lot, and am now starting The Princess Bride."Your first time reading PB? Such fun, I envy you :)
know this is an exact venue BUT just finished watching season one of "Stranger Things" on Netflix and found it Amazing! GnashTag, firestarter, IT.
I'm reading Red Planet Blues at the moment. The characters are a bit flat but the story is entertaining.
Just starting This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab. It begins well - the world building is very promising!
I read the new urban fantasy A City Dreaming by Daniel Polansky. My review is here:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished Kingfisher, a new book by Patricia A. McKillip, and I recommend it for people who like this subgenre (myth and folk tale). Like other books by McKillip, it's superbly written, lyrical, and witty. Inspired by Arthurian myth, with a modern update as digital technology intersects fairy tale.

Well, that's disappointing to hear since it's sitting on my bedside table waiting for me to get to it. What makes it not so good?
