I'm in! I need an "excuse" to read some of these books in the TBR pile, and group discussions are perfect!

message 18: by Michael (new)

Michael | 48 comments I loved his departures from dark fiction, like "Premium Harmony" and "Batman and Robin Have an Altercation." Others, like "Drunken Fireworks," disappointed me. I thought this a very hot-and-cold collection.

message 19: by Duncan (new)

Duncan Ralston (userbits) | 124 comments Been trying to read this, but it's just not grabbing me like his previous collections. Although I have read some of these stories already, like "Ur" and "Mile 81," which were okay.

H.L. Walton | 20 comments Had to get this book as soon as it was released so have already read it but like a lot of others who have already read it, I'm keen to see what others thought. I especially loved Obits and Drunken Fireworks

message 27: by Susan (new)

Susan May (susanmaywriter) Ray wrote: "To me, his true stories about where an idea originated are just as interesting as the short stories and novels. I got this book for Christmas and read Summer Thunder first. I like this story, it is..."

I agree with you, Ray. I love all his short stories. I'm just reading this one now. Halfway through. Some are brilliant and some are okay, but his okay is better than most. He's very much inspired my writing, so whenever someone compares my books to his, I take it as the highest compliment.

The only negative on this book for me is that if it wasn't just released a few months ago, for the past few months my short story collections would be ranking #1 in the horror short story category on Amazon USA. I just can't seem to knock him off his perch. lol.

Look forward to discussing the book here.

I'm really liking King's comments about the inspiration for the stories too.

message 30: by Amanda (new)

message 31: by Katie (new)

Katie | 7 comments I received this book for Christmas! Excited to get started.

message 32: by Joshua (new)

Joshua (jdub_81) I agree Amanda. The little anecdotes are amazing insights into King's personal life and creative process. Im enjoying them so much.

Yeah, me too! Did you read it all the way through? Is it exactly like the novella? Can't decide if I want to skip it.

message 34: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 71 comments Hi Christine, it's exactly like the novella from what I can remember :-)

Just read dune, all the stories I have read so far are enjoyable but not what I would call horror.

I think they said a few novellas in this book are from his earlier books so there might be some that people have read before, but there are new ones also.

message 36: by Eric (new)

Eric Compton (goodreadscomdenimandletters) | 54 comments I should be done with 'Wolf Land' next week and can start this one. Really excited to read it.

A good number of the entries have previously appeared in print (e.g., “Summer Thunder” appeared in Richard Chizmar’s Turn Down the Lights , “Ur” and “Blockade Billy” both appeared as a stand-alone works, “Batman and Robin Have an Altercation” appeared in Harper’s, etc.), but I don’t think any have appeared in any of King’s previous story collections.

message 38: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (laundry_piles) | 7 comments I received for Christmas so I'll try to tag along

message 39: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy (epicfantasydotorg) | 3 comments The story about the man, his wife, her dog and a kick ball blew my mind. Something so surreal about it.

Leah Polcar | 40 comments Jeremy wrote: "The story about the man, his wife, her dog and a kick ball blew my mind. Something so surreal about it."

I had trouble appreciating this story 100% because I was so worried about the dog. (view spoiler)

message 43: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 71 comments So I've just read the 1st shining star in this book, the story "Bad Little Kid". Just utterly brilliant!

message 44: by Angela (new)

Angela DeSilva (goodreadscomangela-desilva) | -3 comments Bad Little Kid was my favorite!

message 45: by Jill (new)

Jill Wilkins | 2 comments Yes, Bad Little Kid was fantastic. I am normally not a huge short story fan, but I always end up ready anything King puts out.

message 46: by T.W. (new)

T.W. Smith (twsmith) Ray wrote: Mr. King has a talent at which Flannery excelled, which is the ability to unveil the grotesque nature of people. He also has the ability to show many of his characters being offered grace.

I'm a huge O'Connor and King fan as well. And I too saw this in the same story. I agree though, the collection is hot and cold. I happen to be a big fan of the more bizarre stories Like "Mile 81," and "UR." "Drunken Fireworks" did nothing for me. Nor did the poetry.

message 48: by Veronica (new)

message 49: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nikkigrace) | 1 comments I had started reading this book the day it was released, but things got really busy and I had to put it down for a while. I only made it to the beginning of
Bad Little Kid and once things finally settled down I was able to pick it back again a few days ago. I look forward to participating in this group read and look forward to everyones thoughts and opinions!

message 50: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany | 6 comments I am really enjoying this book so far. I'm not a huge fan of the poem, but other than that I have liked them all in a different way. I'm currently reading the story "Morality".
