Listened to this on audio when it was first released. loved it! interested to see what everyone thinks about it
Just purchased this and am all ready to go. Think I'll start now as just finished a book so it's an ideal time. Looking forward to it!
I read this as soon as it was released, and really enjoyed it. Im curious to see which stories people liked, and which they didn't. It's definitely worth a read.
Being an avid Stephen King fan I had to read this as soon as it was released. I'd love to hear what everyone thinks!! It's been a couple months so I might have to page through the book to refresh my memory.
Halfway through this book already and I'm loving it. First story was kinda strange, but the rest simply amazing.
So just read 1st story,Mile 81. Remembered that I had already read this when it was released as standalone novella. It's ok, feel quite indifferent to it.
As luck would have it, a copy is waiting on my 'next to read' shelf. Looking forward to diving into another tome from the master.
I'm in! I need an "excuse" to read some of these books in the TBR pile, and group discussions are perfect!
I loved his departures from dark fiction, like "Premium Harmony" and "Batman and Robin Have an Altercation." Others, like "Drunken Fireworks," disappointed me. I thought this a very hot-and-cold collection.
Been trying to read this, but it's just not grabbing me like his previous collections. Although I have read some of these stories already, like "Ur" and "Mile 81," which were okay.
However, I luckily just received this book for my birthday. So I'm ready for it. Also, I'm currently reading his new novel Revival.
Had to get this book as soon as it was released so have already read it but like a lot of others who have already read it, I'm keen to see what others thought. I especially loved Obits and Drunken Fireworks
Ray wrote: "To me, his true stories about where an idea originated are just as interesting as the short stories and novels. I got this book for Christmas and read Summer Thunder first. I like this story, it is..."I agree with you, Ray. I love all his short stories. I'm just reading this one now. Halfway through. Some are brilliant and some are okay, but his okay is better than most. He's very much inspired my writing, so whenever someone compares my books to his, I take it as the highest compliment.
The only negative on this book for me is that if it wasn't just released a few months ago, for the past few months my short story collections would be ranking #1 in the horror short story category on Amazon USA. I just can't seem to knock him off his perch. lol.
Look forward to discussing the book here.
Read Mile 81 last night and it was ok. I'm really liking King's comments about the inspiration for the stories too.
I agree Amanda. The little anecdotes are amazing insights into King's personal life and creative process. Im enjoying them so much.

Hi Christine, it's exactly like the novella from what I can remember :-)Just read dune, all the stories I have read so far are enjoyable but not what I would call horror.

I think they said a few novellas in this book are from his earlier books so there might be some that people have read before, but there are new ones also.

A good number of the entries have previously appeared in print (e.g., “Summer Thunder” appeared in Richard Chizmar’s Turn Down the Lights , “Ur” and “Blockade Billy” both appeared as a stand-alone works, “Batman and Robin Have an Altercation” appeared in Harper’s, etc.), but I don’t think any have appeared in any of King’s previous story collections.
The story about the man, his wife, her dog and a kick ball blew my mind. Something so surreal about it.

So I've just read the 1st shining star in this book, the story "Bad Little Kid". Just utterly brilliant!
Yes, Bad Little Kid was fantastic. I am normally not a huge short story fan, but I always end up ready anything King puts out.
Ray wrote: Mr. King has a talent at which Flannery excelled, which is the ability to unveil the grotesque nature of people. He also has the ability to show many of his characters being offered grace. I'm a huge O'Connor and King fan as well. And I too saw this in the same story. I agree though, the collection is hot and cold. I happen to be a big fan of the more bizarre stories Like "Mile 81," and "UR." "Drunken Fireworks" did nothing for me. Nor did the poetry.
I had started reading this book the day it was released, but things got really busy and I had to put it down for a while. I only made it to the beginning ofBad Little Kid and once things finally settled down I was able to pick it back again a few days ago. I look forward to participating in this group read and look forward to everyones thoughts and opinions!
