Elizabeth John | 2 comments Hi everyone. I'm excited to join this group and share nerdy HF anecdotes. My family just shrug (even the cats, and that's hard to do) when I bore them with yet another little know fact about some obscure dead person. I've been an avid historical fiction reader ever since I can remember and recently published my debut HF novel. I'm fortunate in that my own family has a rich and exceptionally well-documented history, and when I discovered a diary written in the 1600s about my ancestress who lived in the Tower of London - well, who could resist.

My story, The Lady of the Tower, has been many years in the making, and it probably would have happened a lot more quickly if I could have stopped reading and started writing! Happily, it's now published, and I'm on to the next one.

My favorite eras are from Medieval to Stuart England, as well as European / Russian history from the early 1900s to World War II.
I'm looking forward to some great discussions and reading recommendations - although I do have to say I was aghast to see that Clockwork Orange is old enough to qualify as Historical Fiction. That means I am too.

Vivienne Barker | 1 comments Writing about one's family history is easier if you have many aunts/uncles/cousins/parents and even grandparents. Gleaning bits and pieces from the still living when you're like me 67yrs old, is tricky. I don't even live on the same continent any more. However weaving fiction and real events from the period 1905-45 England/Australia/Belgium has helped me create "The Train Now Leaving", and no, its not about trains per se!

Victor Hi there! This is Victor from Mexico although, at the moment, living in Germany :-). I just joined the group looking for new gems to read. First thing you have to know about me is that I'm terrible at categorizing books, however, I enjoy reading classics and historical whether they're fictional or not. Looking forward to participate in the forums and discussions.

Cheers!

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady Greetings!
Historical Fiction has been one of my favorite genres for a long time so I was excited to find this group. My name is Caly and I live in Knoxville, TN. Looking forward to hearing what others are reading.

Tricia DuBay | 12 comments Hi Victor, first I love Mexico, especially Puerto Vallarta.
A newly published book by George Herman, A Comedy of Murders is a biographical mystery featuring Leonardo da Vinci as a Sherlock Holmes type detective. It is the first in a series available on Amazon (obviously). If you like that period Oil and Marble is another good one. I am also always looking for adventure mystery books that are historically accurate.
Tricia

message 265: by Tessa (new)

Tessa (xtvdhx) Hi guys,

I'm new here, so I thought i'll introduce myself! I'm a big history buff, 99% of the books I read are set in earlier times, if that's not the case big chance i'm reading a fantasy. For the last couple of years I have been really into Celtic HF, although for some reason they are hard to find (hint for the writers amongst us, please do make my day ;) .. ) Big fan of WWII novels, the Rebellions in Wales, Scotland and Ireland and the French and Russian Revolution. Time travel/timeslip novels have a very special place in my heart.
A recommendation about any of these topic is always welcome and greatly appreciated :)

I love to travel and visit all the wonderfull places I read about, so much left to see and way to little time (and money lol), by the ending of this year my next backpacking trip is on the calender, very excited about that! It will probably be my last major one since i'm planning on going back to school next year. History it is! Can't wait to make a job from my number one passion.

Joshua Pantalleresco | 4 comments Hello. I'm just starting to get into Historical fiction. I tend to read stuff more along the lines towards fantasy, as that is where my reading habits are strongest - but I've enjoyed the O'Neal Gear stuff, as well as Sam Barone and am starting to branch out into more things.

My name is Joshua Pantalleresco. Nice to meet you all.

Charles Monagan Hi, I'm a new member here, and I'm eager to join discussions about historical fiction. Right now I'm re-reading the mid-20th-century American master Kenneth Roberts. His work has become dated but they're still full of energy and fascinating history from the Revolutionary War period. Anyway, happy to be a member here.

Jan | 1821 comments Can you recommend a good African historical fiction. Perhaps having to do with the salt trade?

message 283: by Gilbert (new)

Gilbert Muradya | 10 comments I don't know of any which involves the salt trade, but many West African writers have published stories which deal with Slavery.

message 284: by Jan (new)

Jan | 1821 comments Thanks, Gilbert.

message 285: by Natasha (new)

Natasha (natashaboyd) | 3 comments Hi All, I just joined. Excited to find the group and look forward to many interesting discussions. I read the current book (A Clockwork Orange) in high school, I'm not sure I can put myself through that again :) My favorite recent HF read was The Nightingale (me and the rest of the world apparently)! I also write romance and last year wrote my first Literary Historical Fiction. While I've always enjoyed reading HF, writing and researching for one gave me a whole new appreciation level for the genre. So I'm excited to discuss the genre with likeminded folks!

Natasha - what time period is your literary historical novel? I have two novels out - both set in the American West 1900-1938. I'm working on next tome set on the Texas coast during WWII.

Meg Osborne Hi everyone,
I'm new here but old to historical fiction. It's the genre I read the most, though I would love to branch out into some different books and time periods (hence joining!)
Looking forward to getting to know you and discussing some good books.

message 293: by James (new)

James Markert Hi all, I'm excited to join this group. My name is James Markert and I write historical fiction for a living, but I was a reader long before I was a writer and I'm always on the lookout for that next best historical. I love reading anything, but find myself drawn to the 1920's and Prohibition and gangsters, the two World Wars, and Victorian Era gothic. Two of my favorite are Pillars of the Earth and The Alienist, and I would love to find any books to rival those stories!

message 294: by Ally (new)

Ally Holland (ailurophile_bibliophile89) | 1 comments Hello! I've been an avid reader ever since I was a small kid, and it's actually because of the Royal Diaries series that I became interested in history. And I'm also just a sucker for princesses and happy endings (though history has more than its fair share of unhappy and rather depressing endings, as well).

I look forward to getting to know people and see what others might recommend as well. Currently I'm reading The Pillars of the Earth and A Breath of Snow and Ashes, which is really a bunch of genres all in one.

Fun fact about me: the best thing in the world (in my opinion) is to curl up with a cup of tea under a warm blanket with a book and a furry cat.

message 295: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome to all the new members looking forward to discussing books with you :)

message 296: by Helen (new)

Helen German Hello everyone! I'm an avid reader. I generally read between 70-80 books/year. And many of these fall in the historical fiction genre. I am currently trying to work through the oldest books in my "to read" list, so have just finished Anna Karenina, and am currently reading Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant. Rutherford's "Paris" is up next. I attend two IRL book clubs, so I read whatever the current book of the month is.
Favourite place to read: in a hammock overlooking the lake.
A few of my favourite books: Requiem, Pope Joan, The Thirteenth Tale, Bel Canto, The Fionavar Tapestry...not all historical fiction, but there you have it. :)

message 297: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome Helen. Your hammock sounds relaxing. Looking forward to discussing books with you.

message 298: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn (evetid) | 1 comments Hello to the group. I like to read historical novels of all eras, as I like the differences between the world now and the world in the past. I am also an author of historical fiction. However, to be an author, one must be a reader. I am looking forward to joining in this discussion group.

message 299: by Blueberry (new)
