Delitealex | 336 comments Picked up The Kingdom (Graveyard Queen, #2) by Amanda Stevens for .99 on Kindle. I've been wanting to continue on with this series.

Janice (jamasc) | 60196 comments I picked up The Complete Sherlock Holmes as a result of our group read on The Sherlockian.

message 103: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee @Janice I've seen it around and I thought of having it on my shelf, but 1700 pages ? When would I read all of that ?

message 104: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60196 comments I don't intend on reading it all in one go. There are 5 novels in it and some collections of short stories. So I'll read a novel and come back to it to read another novel. I probably will record each book as a separate read for my Goodreads Challenges.

message 105: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Thats a good idea .. Good luck, enjoy it :D

message 106: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments The individual books are only around 200-300pp. I read the first two last year. You can happy read them in an afternoon/weekend, then put it down and pick it up for another Sherlock dose like Janice suggests.

I think it took me a little more than two weeks to read the complete collection, the last time I went through the whole thing, but I was obsessed (or maybe possessed) at the time. It was because of the Jeremy Brett TV episodes. I wanted to re-discover the real SH vs. what changes the TV company made, and I was looking for specific pieces of information.

message 108: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Love that TV show, Cherie.
I already have couple of sherlock's books, never had the chance to finish them !

message 109: by Peggy (last edited Jan 30, 2016 12:53AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I know Sherlock Holmes, but I've never seen a movie, tv-series, or read a book. Maybe I should give it a try sometime. Is there one specific book that you would recommend most? Or should they be read in order?

message 110: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 30, 2016 01:20AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments Try the BBC one with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freedman. It is easily the best interpretation I've seen, and very watchable.

I'm reading the books in order, but not sure if this is the best option, although it's working for me. Our Sherlock expert will let us know :)

Lynn | 2987 comments Rusalka wrote: "Try the BBC one with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freedman. It is easily the best interpretation I've seen, and very watchable."

Totally agree with this, it's brilliant.

However take note that it's a contemporary adaptation.

message 112: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I agree with Rusalka! I do love the Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law movies too!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments Lynn wrote: "However take note that it's a contemporary adaptation. "

Only benefit of going to war in Afghanistan multiple times in nearly 200yrs. Sherlock adaptations can continually be made as contemporary.

message 114: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh, Lynn and I were typing at the same time.

Cumberbatch and Freedman are definitely the contemporary version. Their plots combine lots of ACD's story lines but very mixed. My favorite was the Pink episode based on the Study in Scarlet.

message 115: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments I enjoy the Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law ones, but I find they are a bit hollywood - action based and whimsical. Which while parts of the story I don't think is the most important nor best bits.

I like the BBC one as it picks up on the intellectual elements/intuitiveness but doesn't make it boring.

But depending on my mood depends on what I want of course! I'll always make time for Jude Law, but think the BBC version wins... And there are 9 (maybe 10 now?) episodes of that which just gives you more Sherlock!

message 116: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I just ordered What is the What. George Clooney was a guest on a dutch tv show recently and I saw a couple of minutes of it, where they arranged some guy named Valentino Achak Deng to be present there and reunite them. I was curious who he was and what his connection with George Clooney was, and I came across this book. Just from the description: what a story!

What is the What is one of my favorite books - I listened to it and it made the experience richer than if I'd just read it - the accents were a nice complement to the storyline. I hope you like it!

Not to go home empty handed though, I bought Descent by Tim Johnston , The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan , and The Long Way Home by Robin Pilcher for $12.50

Who is the narrator, Travis? It might be a little slow for you, but it is a good story.

No. I did think about it but I have decided to stick with 44 Scotland Street.

Maggie Gyllenhaal. Whiever that is I'm not familiar

message 136: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments She's an actress. Google her and her pic will come up. She was in Donnie Darwko, the dark knight, secretary and probably loads more. I think she'd make a good narrator.

message 137: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I actually recognize her from Sherrybaby but I wouldn't know her without soneone pointing her out. I don't remember the Dark Knight. I actually hated that movie. Batman isn't really my thing

message 138: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments I'm not a big fan of Batman at all, but I really liked the Dark Knight. 98% because of Heath Ledger's Joker. Absolutely brilliant performance.

message 139: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments She was in Donnie Darko? Really? That's her brother's movie. I'll have to look it up

I know Maggie Gyllenhaal from Secretary with her wonderful BDSM thing with James Spader... Mmmm

message 140: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments I just IMDBed it. OMG! One of Lexx's favourite movies and I never clicked. I need to watch it again.

message 141: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Sorry, Travis. I haven't read The Bell Jar yet, but I want to. I haven't gotten my nerve up to read Sylvia Platt yet. She scares me. I might give the audio a go.

I was thinking of Bel Canto. I liked it but I'm not sure if you would.

I have never been the biggest Batman fan either but the three with Christian Bale were really good. Heath Ledger was amazing as The Joker! He was so good it was scary!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments I must say I could leave Christian Bale behind in a heartbeat. "I am Batman. So my voice has dropped 6 octaves."

message 145: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I like the Bale Batman franchise but I didn't like the old cheesy ones. worried about the new Batman/superman film. love heath ledger and the joker generally.

Yep they play Bro and sis in the film.

Lol! Yeah, that did get a bit annoying. It sounded like he had a bad throat. I was tempted to give him a lozenge!

I won't be bothering with the new Batman/Superman film. I am not a Superman fan at all and I don't really like the look of the trailer.
