New Purchases - 2016
I bought The Girl in the Photograph aka Fiercombe Manor, a kindle/kobo deal today. It has mixed reviews but it's only $ .99
Janice wrote: "I'm so excited - The City of Mirrors was released today and I bought it."I bought the Audible version of that one even though I have the Kindle ARC. Scott Brick does an excellent job on this series. I'm looking forward to the buddy read of this one.
I picked up Gone Girl (sorry can't link, on the app) by Gilian Flynn, today. The used bookstore I go to didn't have Me Before You, so I picked up Gone Girl instead.

I read the first two books in print and have specific voices in my head for the characters. Scott is a hit or a miss for me as it is, so I decided I'd not risk that I'd be thrown off my own perceptions. Maybe if I had started the series on audiobook, it would have been a different situation.

Ah... I completely understand that. I have the hardcovers of the first two, but also borrowed the audio from the library. It was a little complicated without whispersync, but it helped to get through it a bit faster. I'm already accustomed to the voices because of that.
So I went through the Audible sale and there were a few books that I might be interested in. I listened to the samples of those and some were either dry text or textbook sounding narration (snooze), but I found a couple that might be good. I'm considering: The World's Strongest Librarian: A Memoir of Tourette's, Faith, Strength, and the Power of Family
Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?
The Lost Girls: The True Story of the Cleveland Abductions and the Incredible Rescue of Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus
The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog: And Other Stories from a Child Psychiatrist's Notebook--What Traumatized Children Can Teach Us About Loss, Love, and Healing
These all appeal to my psychology background on some level and the samples were decent, so now I need to decide...
On a side note - why do so many nonfiction books have to have such obnoxiously long titles??

Janice wrote: "I'm so excited - The City of Mirrors was released today and I bought it."It jumped into my Nook after I turned off Airplane mode and opened my library at noon. (I had pre-purchased it.)

Cherie wrote: "Kristie wrote: "Not yet. There were a couple that I was interested in, but I haven't had a chance to really go through and see what they have and listen to the samples. It's not really my favorite ..."Oh, I had considered that one, Cherie. It's hard to judge by the samples.

That's an amazing *feet* for a book - jumping, that is. Hehehehe
Lisa wrote: "Looks like you have gone on a mini medieval binge, Mariab :D I like the sound of both of them so that's two more for my wishlist..."I have a thing for History books (not only medieval); I buy them, especially when they are old classics (renowned authors) or very new with (hopefully) new theories about an issue
I was looking for a light read for the flamingo geocache task, and found Death by Pink Flamingo. I looked at amazon and it was only $ 3.35 there, but a box set with that book and Revenge of the Pieman and The St. Valentine's Day Cookie Massacre was only $1.11. So I got that ;-)
Just got Someone Else's Skin for free. It's been on my wishlist for a while though, I didn't just get it because it was free. I try not to do that.
I've just bought the rest of the 'Outlander' series:The Fiery Cross
A Breath of Snow and Ashes
An Echo in the Bone
Written in My Own Heart's Blood
I also picked up A Court of Thorns and Roses
Nice Lisa! I'm going to read An Echo in the Bone sometime in the next two months I think. I have it planned for the geocache challenge and we're driving somewhere with our own car for the summer holidays, so no problem to bring a heavy book ;-)
Sarah wrote: "Just got Someone Else's Skin for free. It's been on my wishlist for a while though, I didn't just get it because it was free. I try not to do that."It's tempting to download all of the SYNC offerings, but I've decided that I will only download those that I'm interested in. I got one of the books being offered this week, Egg & Spoon. It's narrated by Michael Page so that's a bonus.
Peggy wrote: "Nice Lisa! I'm going to read An Echo in the Bone sometime in the next two months I think. I swear they get longer with each passing book! I really need to get moving with the series, I still haven't read Dragonfly in Amber yet. Every time I plan on picking it up, I end up reading something else. I might have to have a bit of an 'Outlander' binge over the next few months...
So chunky! It's one of the reasons I'm not making so much progress anymore with the series. Still really enjoy them, but they make me get so behind on all my other reading!
Peggy wrote: "So chunky! It's one of the reasons I'm not making so much progress anymore with the series. Still really enjoy them, but they make me get so behind on all my other reading!"That is one of the reasons why I keep putting off reading 'Dragonfly in Amber'. I'm worried it will take me forever to get through and I will fall behind. It's silly really because Outlander only took me about 2 weeks to read. I thought it would take me at least a month but it was so addictive, I couldn't put it down. What's your favourite book in the series so far?
I think I liked Outlander and Voyager best. The later books take me around a month to read (I do sometimes read another book at the same time). They are a lot chunkier than Outlander (1200-1400 pages!) and although fast-paced and fun, they are a bit slower for me. Or maybe it just seems that way because they're so much chunkier ;-)

I am excited about the others too but I have heard they can be a bit slow in comparison to the first three.
I agree with, Peggy about Voyager, Lisa. I really liked it. I have book #5 in my Geo Challenge, but I have been putting it off too. It is so long....
Good to hear you enjoyed 'Voyager' too, Cherie :) I agree, The Fiery Cross is huge! Hopefully you will get to it soon.
It's the end of the month and time to use a couple of credits on Audible. Freedom of the Mask (book 6 in Matthew Corbett)
Child of the Prophecy (book 3 in Sevenwaters)
I also got The Illegal in trade paperback while shopping at Costco yesterday. It's our July read for my rl book club, the Syndicate.
Came home from my Tara Moss event tonight with her latest book Speaking Out: A 21st-Century Handbook for Women and Girls.(Okay - digression rant here - I searched for that book WORD FOR WORD. It didn't appear. I had to search for her as an author, then click through 14 PAGES of her books to find that link to her newest book. That is APPALLING, Goodreads. You have the money now, learn how to write a bloody search function, it's not that bleeping hard. And now I'm just pissed off)
And then from earlier in the week, I picked up Stiletto from the Daniel O'Malley event. So much reading ahead!!
The search function does leave something to be desired. It would be nice if Goodreads would focus on functionality rather than aesthetics.
Janice wrote: "The search function does leave something to be desired. It would be nice if Goodreads would focus on functionality rather than aesthetics."Indeed. I didn't mind the image change unlike many people, but I would have given the font change, the link colour change, and my right shoe for a search function that works. Bah.
Not this particular right shoe though. I got new ugg boots delivered tonight (new purchase!), and no one is taking these babies off me. EVER.
Rusalka wrote: "Not this particular right shoe though. I got new ugg boots delivered tonight (new purchase!), and no one is taking these babies off me. EVER."That sounds like a challenge.
We spoke too soon, Rusalka. They're beta testing a whole new home page that has the community up in arms with its lack of functionality. I'm not even going to try it until we're forced to.
I hope you like them, Lisa. I read The Gift of Rain in March and liked it so much I had to go out and buy my own copy as well as The Garden of Evening Mists.
I really liked The Garden of Evening Mists, Lisa. I haven't yet read the other one but it's on my tbr!
I picked up Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town from the editor's choice sale on Audible. I also picked up The Song of Achilles for 99⍧ on Kindle because someone somewhere informed me of the sale.
Thanks, Lisa. I'm not sure when I'll get to it, but I've been wanting to read it and for 99⍧ I couldn't pass it up. Glad to see that you ladies both loved it.
I went shopping at Audible today.End of Watch - so excited!
Sale items:
Anna and the Swallow Man
The Faithful
Doomsday Book
Janice - I preordered End of Watch and it came in today! I am so excited to read that one, though I probably won't have time until July. I'm also considering The Faithful as the daily deal. I will probably end up getting it. It seems like something I would like and it's getting generally good reviews.
My preorder came in too. We should organise a buddy read. I need to get June out of the way first though.
