Finished Voyage of the Damned: A Shocking True Story of Hope, Betrayal and Nazi Terror
Review: www.goodreads.com/review/show/1563292733
I finished Iron Kissed which was a just because although I may slot it in as an orphan in the geocache. I need to have a look. Now on to my tribute book with The Best of H.P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre. It's short stories so i can get a few read before I start The Twelve buddy read on the 6th then i can pick it back up again aftetwards.
I've just started Dear Daughter by Elizabeth Little. Yet another book with a Gone Girl comparison sticker on the cover...
I have started two books and I need to start a 3rd, and I cannot seem to want to pick any of them up. Now, I want to start a different one. Don't mind me. I just thought if I wrote it down, I could figure out what was wrong with me. Audio books are the only thing I have been getting through lately. I started listening to The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society Sunday night.
I'm still reading In a Sunburned Country which I'm really enjoying. If you link a book, is the number after the title the order in which the book was entered into goodreads? This is 24. I wonder what 1 is?I also started Memoirs of a Geisha this morning. I only read the first chapter but it promises to be a great book so far. I'm going to be on a train to London today so hopefully I can get some reading done.
Have fun in London Peggy. It's a bit dreary here in the UK today unfortunately. A shame you didn't come yesterday as it was beautiful. No trains running my side of the country (well between Bath and Bristol) so I've had to get a lift with my partner. Enjoy Memoirs... - I loved it.
I'll be leaving shortly, dropping my sister off at the airport and then continuing home. It will be about 5 hours from the airport and I'll be listening to The Turn of the Screw..
In a Sunburned Country or Oil!I had to make a test Peggy. The "24" in the html code you see before you post your comment is the last 2 didgits of the ISBN number? The book I am linking called Oil showed 54847.
I am pretty sure that is what it is.
edited. Nope - that is not what it is. I tried. but I did find a book that I needed for Heather. Now, I need to find the thread where it should go.... ^-^
Thanks for trying to figure it out Cherie :)I arrived safely in London (where it was mostly sunny but with a cold wind). I travelled with colleagues so I didn't read as much as I could have.
listening to The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon what some call "purple prose" but delicious to listen to and halfway through the story suddenly turned marvelously creepy
I started and finished The Turn of the Screw on the trip home today. It was screwy. :) Classics and me just don't seem to get along no matter how hard I try. I saw a review that read, "words words words the house is haunted words words words.... " I have to agree. There were a lot of seemingly meaningless words surrounding key points. I still don't have a clue what went on. I may have to read the ebook which I have because I bought the ebook & audiobook as a whispersync combo. The question is, do I care enough to bother? Maybe not!I also started The Girl with All the Gifts for the group read. So far, I'm intrigued.
Joan wrote: "listening to The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon what some call "purple prose" but delicious to listen to and halfway through the story suddenly turned marvelously creepy"Enjoy, Joan! I read it a couple of years ago and really liked it. It's definitely creepy!
I started the audio of The Girl with All the Gifts on my commute to work yesterday. I'm not too far into, but it's interesting. There is something about it that reminds me of another series, but this is much better writing.
I started Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho earlier in the week, but it just wasn't pulling me in so I've put it aside for now. I'm not giving up on it completely, I'll go back to it for another try eventually.I'm reading The Ribs and Thigh Bones of Desire. Despite the provocative sounding title, this book deals with loss, grief, and coping. I'm not very far into the book, but I'm utterly intrigued by these characters.
I didn't realize I had a theme going with these two titles, but I'm also listening to Circle of Bones by Christine Kling. The characters and inevitable romance between the leads is a little blah, but the plot has sucked me in. The conspiracy theories in the book about how certain wealthy people secretly wield power over politics and economics actually seem legit to me. I've heard about the secret society called the Skull & Bones before, I don't know if it is based on truth or is pure fiction, but I could absolutely believe it exists.
KimeyDiann, I loved The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, so I have decided to add your book to my TBR.
I finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society last night. It was great! I listened to the audio version with multiple narrators.
Cherie wrote: "I finished [book:The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society|272852..."I loved it too, Cherie.

The Alchemist is on my TBR, I hope to get to it eventually. So many books, so little time!
I finished The Wilding. It wasn't as good as As Meat Loves Salt but it was still very enjoyable and the writing and sense of time and place was as beautiful and evocative as I expected it to be. I gave it 4 stars.
Today I'm going to, finally, start reading A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson. She's one of my favourite authors, so have been looking forward to this one.
Thank you all who recommended the buddy read for
(May 2014)Reading the comments has been very interesting.
Sarah - remember that book called Dairy Queen that I said was a GR recommendation because I had read some other book? I added it to my TBR list and never thought any more about it.I found it on Overdrive, as an audio book and downloaded it. I listened off and on yesterday. It is really a great story! I thought it would be a lark and I could use it for my Geo challenge (crown on the cover). It is YA, about a girl on Wisconsin who is going to try out for her high school football team. She has older brothers who played and left home and she does all the work on their family farm because her father hurt his hip and could not work. You would love it!
I finished The Girl with All the Gifts yesterday. I have The Fairy Godmother loaded on my iPad & iPhone, and although I'm not sure I want to read it just yet, I'll go ahead because something light and fluffy might be a good idea right now.
Do you think I should try another Carlos Ruiz Zafron story? If so which one? I liked Marina in the group read. I really enjoyed his language and description of Barcelona.
But, The Angel's Game was a painful, disappointing slog; the characters, premise and action just did not hold my interest.

Have you read The Shadow of the Wind? I started the trilogy with Shadow of the Wind. Zafron says you can start the trilogy with any book, but I think Angel's Game would be the hardest to start with. It was my least favourite of the three. Shadow of the Wind is the best, by far.
I have finished The Golem and the Jinni. I have liked it very much. Now I'm between The Girl with All the Gifts and The Clockwork Scarab (Lisa saying is only Ok, is not very encouraging for this last one...)

I second Janice's recommendation of The Shadow of the Wind, Joan. It's fantastic! I enjoyed all three books in the trilogy but 'TSOTW' is my favourite. Without giving too much away, if you liked Marina, I think you will like 'Shadow' too.
Mariab wrote: "I have finished The Golem and the Jinni. I have liked it very much. Now I'm between The Girl with All the Gifts and The Clockwork Scarab (Lisa saying..."
The Clockwork Scarab is quite a fun, easy read, Mariab, it's just that I have quite a few problems with it. Also, I am not the biggest fan of steampunk or YA in general which could be tainting my enjoyment a little bit.
The summary by Lisa with the tuxedo cat in the buddy read for The Angel's Game really helped me understand the book - I have two questions for people that know the series:
In the epilogue (view spoiler) It made me think of Goya and his work after the Peninsular War.
about David in the other books of the series (view spoiler)["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I am reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. I thought I would finish in on the plane home, but I forgot how early they turn off the lights on planes, and I always feel rude turning on my reading light when it's dark. Enjoying it a lot. I love the writing style and Diaz's voice. Learning a lot more about Dominican politics too. I shall use this for a book with a dictator in it, as Trujillo seeps into every corner of this book.

I don't really recall the specifics of the trilogy. Someone may have better recall about (view spoiler)

Thank you! So good to be back!Besides washing and cleaning today (our housesitters managed to keep the girls alive - their one main job - but managed to use every towel, tea towel and sheet in the house and not wash a thing, not to mention dirty every surface and appliance in the house. /sigh) I am going to read every missed thread and update all my threads and reading before going back to work tomorrow. Well, that's the aim.
Oops, I can't spell.I feel your pain literally. I came home to my office contents crammed into every available space throughout the rest of my apartment thanks to a broken hot water tank on the 2nd floor. I can't get back into my office until they've replaced underlay and drywall, and painted.
After spending a couple of hours nodding off while listening to The Fairy Godmother, I've decided to dnf.I'll start Fated tomorrow.
