Yes. An interesting picture. I drink my morning coffee out of a mug with American Gothic on it. I find that it makes me wake up and sit up straight.

What makes it such an iconic painting? It's a good picture without doubt. I was surprised that it was regarded as highly as Whistler's Mother.
It's a silly question really, it's like asking what makes a Warhol, Litchenstein or Jack the Dripper so iconic lol
I've grown to hate this painting because it's so iconic, so reproduced, so "riffed on", it's become utterly banal for me. It's too bad, because I really like so much of his other work which has not been reproduced 5 billion times.

Not a silly question at all. It makes me wonder if things become iconic for different reasons. Has Michaelangelo's David become iconic for different reasons than American Gothic? I suspect yes.

Strangely, it's painted on beaverboardMust not...too...easy...
I thought I had seen it before in person. I can't filter the fact it's so weirdly famous out of my perceptions, though, kind of like LG said.

Why did they get married then?

If you see a man and woman standing in front of a house, is your first assumption that they're married, or brother and sister? I think it's a pretty natural assumption.
Wiki: "The painting shows a farmer standing beside his spinster daughter (not his wife, as so many parodies and references assume).[3] The figures were modeled by the artist's dentist and sister."

Well, I couldn't find an introduction thread, so I figured I might as well say "HI!" in the thread that mentions new members in the title. Anyways, here it goes: HI!
Did anyone else watch PBS special on folk music? So glad I got home from the Harry Potter movie in time to catch this program. Even with all the pledge drive stuff, it was worth watching and listening. Judy Collins sing with Pete Seeger in "Turn, turn".
I was just thinking the same thing. I must be going nuts.
Thanks for the welcome, everyone. I have a compulsion to always introduce myself to a group I've just joined.
Lol @ Rock Lobstergal's she looks like Jen Aniston ditched by Brad :o)So, a farmer and his spinster daughter eh? Does anyone know if Wiki says it's safe to assume that they're incestuos rednecks in that case?
Hi all, and the fellow newbie :o)
Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) wrote: "Thanks for the welcome, everyone. I have a compulsion to always introduce myself to a group I've just joined."are you a "Usual Suspects" fan?
Hmmm...I can't quite say I know what "Usual Suspects" is, so...no. Why do you ask? If I knew what it was, I might end up a fan, though. :)

Who is Keyser Soze?

I want to make a statement and can't find a thread to put it in. So it's going here. >:(
This thread is driving me crazy.

I've come in here this morning after a jam packed weekend with extremely limited access to a computer. This thread pops up first on the list of unread posts. I can't help myself I read it.
There are some cracker comments as you would expect, but I then spend the next hour trying to find where the comments come from often unsuccessfully. If it's one from LG I'm in deep doo doo, as it's likely she has dredged it up from the archives.

Rachel, "The Usual Suspects" was a very good movie and one of the main characters (sort of) was a mysterious man known as Keyser Soze....he was a red herring, did not really exist.

Who is the "nineteen year old southpaw Math genius on the east coast" that RA mentions in the first post?
Matt. Matthew. Mathiew. He changes his name a lot. He hasn't been around much lately. Every now and then he pops in with an update about his extended family and his difficulties with transferring from one 150K Ivy League school to another.

yes,you do.
I'm not really sure if this is the place for this, but here goes. I created an account on goodreads two hours ago, partly because I was on the lookout for an online forum on books, writers and all that jazz and partly because I was bored out of my wits. I am still finding my way around the site and this community is the first interesting thing I ran into.
Now that I've got that disclaimer out of the way, hello all.
