Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge discussion
2016 Read Harder Challenge
>
Task 18: Read a Book That Was Adapted Into a Movie. Then Watch The Movie. Debate Which Is Better.
I'm going to try for Brooklyn. I'll make it my first book of the year and hopefully the movie will still be in theaters when I've finished reading!
I love the movie P.S. I Love You. I cry every time. So it's book
counterpart has been on my TBR pile for a little while. I've put it off because I have to be in the mood to read chit lit--especially when I know it's going to make me cry.--doneAccording to the challenge, I also need to debate which is better...
Well, first off I should say, it took me forever to read this because I love the movie (didn't know there was a book at the time), and was noticing right away that it differed so much from the book. I found out that I didn't like book Holly as much. I liked movie Holly's chosen job better. This story is still a tear-jerker, but I cried at different places in the book and the movie. I vote for the movie!
Paula Hawkins' "the girl on the train" is being released as a movie in 2016, so I'm going to read that one.

I loved The Blackwater Lightship, so this may well have to make it onto my list. Thanks for that.
I'm going to try The Wolf of Wall Street, I think. I can't decide if I think I'm going to love it or hate it, so we'll see if that ends up being my pick to finish.

Since we have the DVD (and my husband is willing to watch a movie with me), I am going with Fight Club.
Would Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them count for this, since the movie is releasing sometime in 2016?
The Martian seems like the obvious choice for me here if only because I know my husband will watch the movie with me (even if he won't read the book).

Just finished reading The Martian and I think it's a great pick for this challenge.
Other book/film combinations I've enjoyed in the past are Cloud Atlas (book and film both excellent, and really rich for comparison) and The Prestige by Christopher Priest - I saw Christopher Nolan's brilliant film first, and was surprised to find how different the novel was. I think somebody else has already mentioned liking Life of Pi more as a film than as a book, and I probably agree with that, even though I read the book first in this case...
A little bit leftfield... The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins is an enjoyable and influential early detective novel, for anybody looking to tick a classic off their list, and has been adapted into a couple of enjoyable films/miniseries.

I'll be doing Gone Girl and The Devil Wears Prada. The trick is finding time to watch the movies--I'd much rather be reading!I read Cloud Atlas this year and absolutely loved it, and I have the DVD laying around, but I just haven't had the time to watch it.

Yeah, finding a free three-hour slot and resisting using it as reading-time is tough, but for Cloud Atlas... It's one of those films I can watch again and again and again - it's probably been six times or so since I first watched it and I'm well up for another viewing sometime soon!

Dom wrote: "Maybe Never Let Me Go: I've somehow managed to miss both the book and the film up to now..."Both are FANTASTIC.
I am currently reading In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex and hope I can finish it in time to see the movie version while it is still in the theater.
Kathryn wrote: "I'm going with Room by Emma Donoghue."Great choice. A rare example of when I thought the movie was better than the book. The film just blew me away.
I'm planning on reading The Martian first (even though I've already seen the film) and also Winter's Bone if I have the time
going to go with The 25th Hour. I have been meaning to read this since I read and loved City of Thieves. I hear Spike Lee did a great job with it too.
I was just browsing Netflix to see what my options might be, and now I'm thinking Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. I'd meant to see that, so I might as well read the book first, right?
Elena wrote: "I was just browsing Netflix to see what my options might be, and now I'm thinking Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. I'd meant to see that, so I might as well read the book first, right?"I really liked the book and the movie.
I got Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster for Christmas, so I'll be reading that and watching Everest.
Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist the film version has been on my to watch list for a while now, and the novel version is cheaper than usual. So I might as well try it.
Daena wrote: "Going with Olive Kitteridge."Good call. This one has been in my TBR for ages, and I know it's on HBO Go too. Thanks for the reminder!
I have a few options: Dark Places, Winter's Bone, Me Before You and The Circle (which I never finished). I would include Girl on the Train, but I just finished reading it, excited for the movie though.
Rainey wrote: "I am going to read The Martian. Its been on my TBR pile for awhile."The Martian was my choice, too. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the book. I watched the movie last night and loved every minute.
Holly wrote: "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist the film version has been on my to watch list for a while now, and the novel version is cheaper than usual. So I might as well try it."I loved both! And I like books that kinda have a soundtrack built into them.
Book/Movie which is better? The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie-by Muriel Spark
My Left Foot - by Christie Brown
The River - by Rumer Godden
I think this is going to be difficult.
I got Headhunters by Jo Nesbø for Christmas, and I see it's on Netflix (certainly in the UK) so I'm going to do that for this task.
I think I will either go with The BFG that the movie is coming soon of with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and will watch the adaptation with Johnny Deep I already watch the other one but never read the book and the other book I read it almost 20 years ago...
Since I picked it up at a library book sale a couple of months ago I'm planning on reading Out of Africa by Karen Blixen. I've seen the movie a number of times but I've never read the book. So this should interesting.
I'm currently reading Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed. Not my usual type of book but as a keen hiker, enjoying it a lot so far, intrigued to see how this was adapted onto the big screen!
Soph wrote: "I'm currently reading Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed. Not my usual type of book but as a keen hiker, enjoying it a lot so far, intrigued to se..."the book is really good. I have the film lined up to watch as well.
